The '55 Chevy was the first successful Chevrolet with an optional V8 engine. Chevrolet had produced an earlier car with a V8 in 1918 (Chevrolet Series D), which used a 36-horsepower overhead valve 288-cubic-inch V8, but it remained in production for only a year.[5] In 1955, Chevrolet decided to fit its new car with an overhead valve V8 engine design, which was similar to the 1949 Oldsmobile "Rocket 88" V8 engine which was an earlier GM success. Chevy's new 265-cubic-inch overhead valve V8 was designed to be smaller, lighter, and more powerful than previous V8s in the auto industry, and would come to be known as the "Chevy small block".
Additionally, Chevrolet drastically changed its body design. The 1955 Chevy had smooth straight panels on the sides and hood. This was a major departure from previous years for Chevrolet. Although Ford introduced what would be the first "shoe box" body design in 1949, GM and Chrysler were slow to catch on, only slowly replacing some of their bubble-like hood and side panels with flatter one's each year, without achieving a full shoebox look by 1954. But in 1955, Chevy designed the entire car with the full shoebox look. Along with the flatter straighter panels, the '55 also had modern que's like wrap-around glass on the windshield, and triangular tail lights that jutted outward. This new look, combined with new power and engineering, made the '55 an instant hit with the buying public and a critical success.
The car's popular "shoe-box" body style and chassis were carried over to 1956 (with changes to some of the front and rear aesthetics and bottom body line), and then carried over to 1957 (where the body was lengthened several inches in the rear and more drastic aesthetic changes were made).
The '55, '56 and '57 Chevy's are extremely sought after by collectors, enthusiasts and hot rodders, and the three model years are often referred to by the given nickname of the "tri-fives". Source: Wikipedia
Started this kit last night. First big scale build
Wow, you have got me thinking about starting this as a hobby. I did modeling as a youngster, now I want to go back.
No time like the present to start.
not as cheap as it was when we were young, but have to have the right tools for the job
Terminator? No way. This guy's the Modelnator! A model killing machine!
I'll be back!
Thanks!
I loved putting together AMT models as a kid. I would save all the unused parts and use them to "customize" future kits. I used my mother's black sewing thread for the distributor wires. Great job Chris, You are very neat and thorough, after watching this video I want to go out and get an AMT model kit. PS that last time I bought one it cost $2.00, so it's been a while. Thank you for your fine video.
Thanks for watching Deek!
I see this kit as a new arrival from an online hobby site. Then go to youtube & you have this review of the kit I just learned about minutes before. Nice color. There is a lot of molded in detail that I thought would be separate parts, but, oh well it is still an awesome kit. Good job with that interior.
Thanks for watching Daniel!
This car is absolutely beautiful! You definitely went with the right choice of color for this kit!
Great video and build. Built an earlier release in 1979 during the blizzard. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching!
After watching your build of this car I managed to purchase the same kit can’t wait to build mine I’m going for the custom model thanks for this video very inspirational just hope I can build mine to the same spec
Hope you enjoy it!
I built that kit 30ish years ago from an old kit from the seventies, & painted it up the same color. Had to repair the windshield as it had been crushed into the box & bent in the center. Shady memory but I believe the box art pictured a blue & white car & that's why I built it that way, great color combo!!
Thanks for watching!
TY for another build. I'm working on the 1/25 scale 55 Chevy Bel Air right now. I'm hoping this gives me some cool ideas. Thanks again.
I literally just got this kit yesterday. Going to do a double build with the 1/16 1955 Nomad. Yours looks awesome! Keep up the great work!
I just ordered this model kit I am painting mine turquoise and white also doing carpet with aqua embossing powder seats turquoise and white can't wait to get kit
That's a beautiful ride man! With the garden pond in the background, it reminds me of something Mr. Miyagi might drive.
It does!
Beautiful model, great build review! You make it all look so easy. I always had trouble when I was younger (early teens) with aligning opening doors. Age brings enlightenment, lol. I really appreciate Model Roundup providing you models to preview/review. All of the Round2 stuff is great!
Thanks Stu, this one is from Round2 direct, they also help sponsor the show with kits, along with Revell and Atlantis too!
@@hpiguy all of your sponsors a greatly appreciated as your channel has rekindled my love of models, and seeing the older kits brought back is awesome! Great job Round2, as well Revell and Atlantis for keeping the hobby alive!
Beautiful work, Chris! I've been waiting for this beast on your channel. You've given me some ideas on mine when I build it. I'm thinking a pink with black exterior and pink and white interior. I can't wait to get started on this guy! 1/16 scale cars are probably my most loved kits to build (alongside 1/24 and 1/25 big rigs sets from Italeri, Moebius, Revell, and AMT). Great build! Bravo!
Thanks, these bigguns are made for flashy color combos, have fun making yours!
slick and skilled video - your productions are the best. A tedious video doesn't hold one's interest but yours do. Makes me want to get them all . . .
Thanks a lot James!
Great kit! Brings back memories of when I built my big Nomad. Many of the same parts obviously. Nicely built Chris!!
Thanks Topper!
I always enjoy your car builds and the use of the rattle cans, to be honest I think they make the best car and truck paint jobs, if you can keep your hands off them until they cure.
Thanks William!
You have done a outstanding job on this build, I'm not really a car fan, but I enjoy your builds and I have to admit I like cars of this era and scale.
Thanks Les, I'll build anything and everything. No kit discrimination on this channel. LOL
Love the colors. Looks like its ready for a Sunday drive. Definitely have to add it to my 1/16 scale collection.
Thanks a lot Shannon, always!
Beautiful kit, great build. And the show off in the garden is an excellent idea. Personnally, I find those scales too big for my tastes, but they make great kits none the less.
Thanks man!
This helps me a lot because I am building this right now!
Enjoy!
Great video...but I especially like your OPEC joke! 😆
Haha, thank you David!
That is a real beauty of a 55 Chevy Bel Air convertible . Love that sea mist color with the light blue interior, really stunning 👍
Thanks Jerry!
I want to drive this down the street - full size, of course. Beautiful.
Me too, right to Sam's Pizza!
A beautiful kit of a beautiful car... I really like the colors you chose for it. Thanks!
Thank you Hisham!
Good job ! I built the 55 hardtop as a stock car ( RACE ) just like the real car I raced in the mid 60s , it came out great , I hope they come out with the hardtop again .
You make box stock look gorgeous! That is one sweet stock 55. I got inside info that I'm getting this car for father's day. I can't wait to build it. Great job!
Good luck!
Love those pastel colors on old cars and porcelain coated kitchine cabinets.
I actually built this model, but in it's custom form, and it is rather detailed but went together nicely. Beautifully done BTW.
Thanks!
Beautiful build of a beautiful classic Chevy. Almost looks like actual car.
Glad you like it!
I’d love to see a 1952 Fender Telecaster electric guitar with a blonde-wood paint job in the backseat ! Pastels and blonde-wood are so ‘50’s..
Beautiful workmanship.
Thanks Machia!
This is awesome! Love your channel. Anyway, on hobby forums all over the internet, modelers all decry the use of Krylon and Rust Oleum spray paints on plastic models. They say it obscures details, and melts the plastic. Yet, I have found a bunch of modelers on RUclips, including yourself, producing gorgeous models doing just that.
Nice pointer on the carpet flocking trick! Another awesome build!
Thanks Brian!
i did purchase this model using your link from model round up i plan using the same colors as you
Nice build, I’ve seen this lot for years, have the 55 and 57 Nomads and Hardtops but have always passed on the convertibles, I’m going to have to pick some up now 🤙🏼
Very cool!
I haven't built this kit in years! Nice job!
Thanks for watching Richard!
Turned out great Chris. Nice color combo. Looks right out of the 50s! Well done.
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful! The '55 BelAir is one of the best looking cars of the 50s to begin with, and you did another stellar job with great detail! My favorite detail here is the carpet flocking - as someone who has seen many of the real tri-5 Chevys in real life at Barrett-Jackson and other major classic car auctions, I can tell you your carpeting detail is spot on perfect to the real thing! On the BelAir trim, GM used a thread weave interlacing the interior color with black and silver. It really pops in the sun. You matched it perfectly!!
Thanks a lot and for the confirmation on the carpet Joey!
Astounding job on this beauty! I'm going to have to see if I can get one!
Thanks for the nice words, we love all our cool viewers and their friendly support!

The 50's had THREE THINGS going for it - pastel turquoise, the "tri five" Chevys and everybody wore "dress clothes" in public. (and that's MISTER Fuddy Duddy to all of you - stay off my lawn too). Your works are fascinating, fun and a little costly on my budget - but DON'T STOP.
Thanks for sharing...
Thanks a lot RA! Enjoy all your new kits and get to building some up!
Very nice color choices, as always that came out beautiful...I'm feeling this one great job.
Thanks!
As being a double nickel fan, yet another kit to buy. Great build Chris. Keep the vids comming, I enjoy them.
Thanks Bob!
Great build man, first discovered these great kits back in the early 90's,have built so far the '57 chevy convertible,'57 ford thunderbird,a couple of '64 ford mustangs, currently working on converting an old amt '55 chevy hardtop into a 1950's stock car, even sent & got some decals for that, great kits, also have in my stash the 1/16 '57 chevy nomad, another '55 chevy hardtop & this '55 convertible you've just done, thanks for the great tips with yours,as well I have also built the Revell 1/16 '34 ford coupe kit as well,a terrific kit, comes out as a great looking model as well, highly recommend that one too, keep up your awesome work, cheers
Thanks Malcolm!
Very nice. I love the 55. A truly iconic car.
heyhey Chris....had this one when I was a kid @ 11...lol...55 now....AMT brought back the 1/16 Nomad , hopin' to get one , found online @ a decent price.....already got plans cookin' for it , rocking on
Robert
Nice, hope they issue more, it was fun!
Nice work, nice video. I did notice 2 issues. It seems all the Chevy V8 models I've seen delete the V under the emblem on the hood and trunk, and the front splash pan / gravel shield seems a bit deep, causing the bumper to sit too far forward. Other than that, looks like a well designed high quality piece. Away from model building for many years, this one might make me jump back in. Wish there were more 1/16 -1/18 kits available. Can't do the small ones anymore.
You have been cranking out the videos. I look forward to every one. Excellent work.
Thanks Bill, I try for two full builds each week!
I'm jealous of all you You Tube model builders. Nothing ever seems to go wrong with your builds. I have this same model and it was a nightmare to build. Never could get the wiring to stay attached to the distributor and I used all types of adhesives. Doors still don't fit right even after modification to make them close. Only thing that came out to my liking was the paint.
If there are issues I say so but most of the time it takes a little bit of fiddling and things come out ok.
I have a older kit ,and mine is molded in baby blue.
I love your videos
Thanks Roger!
I remember many years ago when I was young they had a lot of the kids that actually had a plug wire kits and distributor and you have to wire that part
When I was younger, engine plumbing kits were sold as accessories from 3rd parties. However, this kit included it back then as well.
I Had That Kit Back In The Late 70`s. Their Was A `57 Chevy & A `55 Chevy Nomad In 1/16 Scale As Well.
Cool!
Another great review... thank you! Small bummer that when tooled way back when that it couldn’t have been created in 1/18 or 1/12 scale since little else has been made in 1/16 scale. OH WELL!
Thanks. A cool car in any scale!
Really nice clean build Chris, I love the color combinations, just outstanding!!!
Thanks a lot Ron!
WOW, absolutely outstanding build.
Thanks Joseph!
ALWAYS look forward to your reviews . I like the paints your using and they come out great. Sometimes people look down on rattle cans but they look great IMO. looking forward to next one
Thanks a lot Tony!
@@hpiguy your welcome sir
I was hoping you'd get around to building this one ever since I saw it on Round 2's RUclips channel - it looks to be an amazing model and I am sorely tempted....
Thanks Simon!
I built the 1/16 amt hardtop version about 30 years ago. Nice.
Cool!
Awesome build! Perfect color & I’m glad you went original!
Thanks for the comment!
Nicely done, bigger models have a lot more detail, great job
Thanks!
Stunning Work Chris, thanks for Sharing n God Bless All
Thanks much Gary!
Y W SIR
Beautiful job 👏!
Great review! I've got the original release early 1960s Monogram kit of the 1/8th scale XKE Jaguar Coupe. It is huge! It's in its original box etc. I've got to get round to making it one day! If you can't have the real thing this model is about as best as it gets due to its size and for its time, still very good detail. Very Nice Bel Air build up, well done!
Thanks Mark!
Nice! I love the large scale kits, working on my 1/12 Fiat 500, this, too, is an awesomekit! thanx hpi guy!
Thanks bud!
Nice color choices, made it look very nice.
Thanks man!
Beautiful build. The way it should be done. Believe it or not, I do believe I have a hard top. Missing the major parts though. Great build. Till the next one. 👍😁
Thank you Dan!
Awesome job Chris. I have a few of the 16th scale cars. They nuild quite well.
Thank you Charlie!
Thanks again Chris another great review I my self love the larger-scale models I'm at the age my eyes are letting me down a little lol just like to say wonderful paint job love your tow tone paint jobs real art work in my book
Thanks a lot Troy!
Great colors, love the build as always, one more to add to my bucket list.
Thanks a lot Charles!
I may be a little late and I'm not usually one that corrects but that steering wheel " Trim ring " is actually known as a Horn ring many older models of cars had the ring all the way around the whole wheel then they went to half rings and then in the late Sixties some cars eliminated that ring with a button sometimes with an extension coz of the Deep Dish of the steering wheel and then some horn rings were built into the wheel itself known as Rim blown horns !! Out 73 or 74 Mercury Marquis had that feature I can't pinpoint the year coz I was like 7 or 8 yrs old at the time !!
Love the Bel Air, nice work Chris!...Bill
Thanks Bill!
Omg I’ve been looking for this one I have the 1/16 56 nomad and I made the tailgate and back window open and put LED’s in the head & taillights. So much detail you can put into these big boys.
Holy cow I love this channel !!
Thanks Jack, it's my first big scale car and I liked it!
I have been looking at buyig this kit and the Nomad kit as well from the 1:12 scale series. I might go a chrome finish all around and then a top coat of Spectraflame Windex Blue to finish it up.
Enjoy!
Man o man iv gotta get this kit asap! Just built my first ever 1/16 scale the amt 65 mustang kit. Must say its strange going back to the 1/24&5's afterwords... Love the color i may get some for a 59 caddi kit its very period correct looking. O and i found some modpodge at the local dollar tree by me! 1$ im ready to try it out soon! Thanks for another great build sir!!!
Thanks a lot Adam, enjoy your kits!
Chalk up another one in your book Chris, Beautiful build buddy.
Thanks Jim!
Looks awesome I'm probably going to buy that kit
You should!
Great build as always Chris! I’m loving my 1/16 VW Bus! Having a blast. May have to build some more 1/16 kits.
Thanks Dave, enjoy your mini-bus!
She's absolutely beautiful Chris! And I see you're an embossing powder user too! I've been using that for years and to my eyes it represents carpeting in a much better scale than flocking. Flocking is OK for big scales such as 1/12 and 1/8, but for smaller stuff embossing powder is the way to go.
A couple nits though......I sure do hope the box is MUCH tougher than the ones these kits used to be in. EVERY time I see the reissues on eBay, the body is messed up with severe warping or outright broken windshield frames.
Also, I sure do wish that AMT would have modeled an uptop for something this size. I'm a big convertible fan and it's mostly because they look nice with their tops UP with windows down.
Thanks for the review and keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching man!
Absolutely beautiful mate, those colours are very period looking !
Thanks a lot Gary!
loved the color choice you picked I've build a couple of the big scale models but not a fan of them, they take up to much room in my display case lol
Thanks for watching Craig!
Wow another great job nailed that color combo looks awesome
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a nice comment!
Huge Kit don't need my glasses to build this 1 ... LOL Great Review
Nice Charles, thanks!
I love 1/16th scale models....
Cool!
Love this car
Me too! Nice kit indeed.
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
I would like to know what you do with your finished models when completed? I hope you have a nice showroom.
Actually when this series first came out in the late 70's, a hardtop and nomad were available and I built them both.
Thanks for watching!
True story: I remember in the early 60's my big brother bought a '55 Chevy from a used car lot. When he drove it home and began looking it over really well, he found an old, stale hamburger wrapped in take-out paper inside the glove box. 😀
Beyond poetry. It is a candy on four wheels.
Thanks a lot Charlie!
Beautiful job buddy!!! I see you decided not to use boots for the plug wires... I've only done that once myself... One of these days I'll be building again...
Thanks William!
Now it's ready for a Sunday drive
Cruisin!
Beautiful build Chris!
Thank you Scott!
