- Well come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Viet Nam
put down your books and pick up a gun
we're gonna have a whole lotta fun
(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die
Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go
there's plenty good money to be made
supplying the army with the tools of its trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on the Viet Cong
Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those reds
cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come
Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Viet Nam
come on fathers don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box - Видеоклипы
This was 1969. How many of these young guys in the crowd were drafted a little later.
Me - April 4th 1971 I 'won' the draft lottery.
@@RicherPickle How did this work anyway? _Was_ it some kind of lottery? Apart from winning the birth lottery and being a fortunate son? Greetings from Germany!
@@Furzkampfbomber IF I understand it correctly you were assigned a number 1- 365 according to your birth date. If they pulled your number everyone of age born on that date got drafted

When I was in schools battalion at Montfort Point in 1970 this was one of the most popular songs the guys were playing. The irony is that most of us were Vietnam bound. USMC1969-1971
There’s always a war. 😢😢
I worked at the NCO club at Camp Johnson which is Montford Point in the 80's.
My oldest brother was in 'Nam. When he was home on leave, he played this song on a cassette tape (remember those)? I'll be 59 in June, so i was considerably younger than he. Posting January 3, 2022.
yes, same old shit. usmc 1969-1972. \
came over today from zero hedge where they posted this song.
what the fuck. not much changes but the faces and the names, but the game remains the same.
I recall this song well.
Thank you for your service
Whenever I hear Joe exhort us to "SING LOUDER!" I do...
the chills i get when they all stand up
This song is the only song that give me goose bumps - still - a classic.
I get the chills through out the whole song and then some - a real classic.
It's so incredibly sad and disgusting how relevant this still is
Susanne Seiler 30 years of Reagan bush and post -conservatism have done us in

@@nmx1112 Unfortunately Nick is quite right. Remember President Johnson was a Democrat. It was the entire Washington establishment that was behind the 57,000 American kids who died in Viet Nam and, no thanks to Nixon, Cambodia as well.
I just sing Afghanistan instead of Viet Nam. Soon we will sub in Iran. At least itll rhyme.
Everybody is wrong president Eisenhower started the involvement in Vietnam he was Republican
the balls dude. This is what we are missing
Yep.
The girls are all rocking out and the guys just have a glassy stare, thinking about going to 'Nam.
Sure
I noticed that. Only a few were having a good time.
Lol is it bad that this song puts me into a pretty damn good mood?

I didn't know for many years that the melody came from the song "Muskrat Ramble" , until I heard the McGuire Sisters doing that song and recognized the melody..
Thanks to whoever posted the lyrics. Posting January 3, 2022. Happy 80th birthday (2 days after the fact) to Country Joe.
I think that was original from the Woodstock movie.
This Song is Such A BOP!
All us Vietnam vets fav song hooah 1969, came out in 1967, I was still in HS
0:48 the girls trying to sing and be enthusiastic about dropping the war and the boys staring, knowing that they will be drafted
That poor guy in the middle is actually scared stiff, holy shit
when i was in high school, the teacher asked if any of us had this song, i raised my hand. the others were not surprised unior year 1991...she wanted it played to the class
My uncle and aunt were there in 1969 he also joined the Army and was in Vietnam he died a few years ago but what I can remember about him was he was a bit crazy he used drugs to forget about the war as a lot of soldiers did
War Kid 1970 did he get help to from the Veterans Administration 🤔
if you uncle was at woodstock he probably used drugs prior to the war. stop making excuses for crutches.
@@idolthreatpodcast2138 someone may drink casually before a traumatic experience, then become an alcoholic after. i don't think blazing a jay at woodstock is exactly the same as self-medicating to forget Green Hell. stop shaming veterans for coping with trauma.
Where was that concert at?
@@tjmakings Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly referred to simply as Woodstock, was a music festival held August 15-18, 1969, on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 40 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock.
😥😥😥 So many died, so many came back broken ... great song but it's message was sad
So different from today -- a huge crowd, an anti-war song with lyrics the crowd knew, a seeming consensus among young people for a progressive cause. What a shame that died out.
Trump is the most anti-war president since Lincoln. Leftists today are pro-war and are nothing like these hippies. Pretty hilarious how the tides reversed ;)
@@magarambo2920 Back to /pol/ with that weak ass bait.
@@magarambo2920 Trump is antiwar only for himself and his family! USMC1969-1971
@@magarambo2920 he increased the civilian killing drone strikes several fold over what obama had, bombed syria, violated the iran deal and assassinated an iranian general, tried and failed to install a corporate puppet in venezuela, pulled out of a NUCLEAR WEAPONS treaty with russia, and didn't pull out of the wars we were already in which he promised to do. trump's presidency saw an increase in american military violence, not a decrease. also please stop calling center right corporate democrats, basically republicans in blue, 'leftists'. they are to the right of the american people on most issues and even to the right of many republican voters, many of whom support ending war, funding infrastructure, and having single payer healthcare
@@smitty1647 So, Venezuela is better off right now?
I can’t help feel bad all those young lives lost and it didn’t change a thing and now our country’s leaders care even less. No wonder recruiting is down it’s because we the youth are tired of the bs.
I feel like the anti war message makes this like a country punk before punk yknow
If I Had a Hammer written by Pete Seeger - recorded by the Weavers and later by Peter Paul & Mary. The abbreviated lyrics go like this: if I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning, I’d hammer in the evening all over this land, I’d hammer out danger, I’d hammer out warning, I’d hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land.
If I had a bell, I’d ring it in the morning ……
If I had a song, I’d sing it in the morning ……
Well I have a hammer and I have a bell and I have a song to sing all over this land. It’s the hammer of justice, it’s the bell of freedom, it’s a song about love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land. A great protest song. What I have always said was missing from our modern day protests is the popular protest songs - there of course are a few especially from the group Green Day. But during the Vietnam protests and the Civil Rights protests and later the woman’s protest for equal rights, popular artists were publishing and singing these protest songs and they became significant and integral parts of these protest movements. I have a playlist of protest songs old and new on Spotify. The Civil Rights movement used the song We Shall Overcome written by Rev Charles Albert Tindley 1901. Later recorded by many including Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. There are many many anti war songs - Where have All the Flowers Gone, Times They are a Changing, One Two Three What are we Fighting For
Generation Kill took me here

I love this
I am a Marine Nam Vet. I loved this song and the other music of the day.
Still I eagerly went to Nam, hell, I was a Marine. We sang a lot of crazy shit songs, it relieved the stress. Then we came home and they blamed us for the war, LOL.
The times were insane, kind of like today. These kids were just kids doing what they thought was cool. It boosted the morale of the NVA who were trying to kill us. I don't think that was treason, just the rights of Americans to believe in whatever they want to believe in.
We never lost a battle of any significance in the whole Vietnam war. But the public no longer supported the effort and we pulled out. It was several years later that the NVA were able to launch an attack that succeeded in defeating the South Vietnamese.
I would have loved to have gone to Woodstock, such cool music, but a short haired 19 year old Marine would not have been welcomed. I would have loved to hear Grace Slick sing White Rabbit.
Man I once went down a rabbit hole 5 years ago of the 60s and Jefferson Airplane and never looked back. I was obsessed with the decade from good to bad. I purchased record players, all kinds of albums from the 60s. My first son (the wild one) I played a lot of Airplane and Stones first two years of his life. My 1 yr old (the laid back) I played a lot of grateful dead...
I always wanted to talk to someone from the war as I have a great deal of respect and honor for you. You guys were tough as nails. I get into it with people often about today times and the 60s like I lived it! I'm an 80s baby and I know I have no clue what your time was like but respect to ya.
You never lost any major battle but you still lost the fucking war dipshit. Spoiler alert you did nothing to make the world a better place you just went a world say to fuck yo some other peoples lives.
You lost the whole war!!! Never lost a battle behave!!
@@davecoulson4398 We never lost a battle of any significance and Vietnam was still a Republic when we left. The South Vietnamese were defeated, not the Marines. Read your history.
We stopped the NVA at every turn, we took some hard fights and heavy casualties when outnumbered but we never lost. The NVA bled and bled. They had to wait until we left and then it still took the 3 more years.
@@jbb9643 Amen.

This song is still revelant.
In 2024 we're still asking the same question "What are we fighting for?"
Today the death toll from covid-19 surpassed that of that war. I think we need some new words to it today.
Bernie Starzewski if you research you'll see the death toll of COVID isn't actually from COVID.. hit by a bus-died of coronavirus, self inflicted gun shot wound-died of coronavirus, heart attack-died of coronavirus and ect... No doubt there is something horrible going on right now, but it isn't the virus, it's those exploiting the virus and trying to take the good old fashioned American spirit away from the people. Let's not compare this to Vietnam war vets, that was it's own situation, let's not forget it, but focus on now and the major issues this country is facing. We all need to stand together, against the elites that pull the strings! God bless
