I get the not throwing games away for a kid thing, and completely agree. They could have told the kids pre-game that they are conceding and want to just play for fun. The thing is, if that was cheating, then Gentleman's agreement on dlc day 1 is also cheating. Which I think it is.
It may sound weird but a good counter to green/purple, I found last set champs, is amber/ruby Mufasa. Whenever I went against it, I did well. I had good removal, could get a wide board, heal damage. It hasn't done well this set, but if E/A keeps doing well, I think it should be re-evaluated.
I liked the discussion on choosing decks, in future episodes I would be interested in more breakdown of the meta decks matchups and advice on selecting for tournaments. Locals don't always have a full meta representation, mine only have one Sapphire player (Ruby/Sapphire) for example with the vast majority playing the two amber/steel varients or hyper aggro, so I’d appreciate insight on what decks perform well without specific colors present for example, and which cards would be added/removed in different meta decks when planning for different matchups.
I’m not sure annihilating a kid to the point they have no fun makes the game better lol. Dick move… if you are good enough you can at least carry them through the game and make it feel close.
If it wasn’t obvious already, this episode proves Zan doesn’t have kids yet. I get making a kid work for it improves morale and develops skill, but you also need to balance enthusiasm and interest. If you keep smacking the ball out of the kids hands (to use the basketball analogy he used in the video) then that kid will lose patience and move onto the next thing. If your goal is to kill the next generation then keep doing that. Also Pokémon does mini sets all the time and they do extremely well. Super easy to get and buy cards in TCGplayer. Not sure what the whole problem is, it’s nice to have a small break every now and then and throw in a few meta cards and not have a huge bombshell every time. The bombshells are fun yes but I’m just saying a break is also fine, makes the next big set more exciting.
No, I don't think we should give kids the win. It is a learning experience, as it is for all of us. Now don't rub it in their face, but teach them where they went wrong - like the Friends On The Other Side. Say they shouldn't have done that after. Also, I'm slightly more lenient with kids. So let's say they go to do something they technically can't do, like try to target a ward character, I'll let them take it back and not make them target their own, as some would. But I won't straight up give them it. We have some really good kids in this game and I doubt they have been given the win, they often beat adults easily. So I really think it depends on how you handle it.
Great point about determining how good a deck is based off the quanity of tops versus the quallity. Just because a 1 deck "specialist" can top tournaments gives more information on the olayer versus the deck. When the bucky deck was around, everyone was winning because the deck was insane. Now i feel like the meta is pretty decent with any deck having a chance to take down the tournament. Also agree that with how hard it is to really teat, over testing and going too deep on levels can actually backfire. Basically how zan said just play the best deck because the player base is slow to metagame and react agains the best deck so playing the deck that is good against the counter to the best deck may be too far removed 😝. My roommates and I went too deep into the testing process when we played magic and our decks became "inbred" is what I called it 🤣🤣🤣 Also Zan saying "They were jn the stone ages" when referring to the LCQs across the pond 🤣🤣🤣 About half way through the episode, just wanted to leave a comment before i forgot my thought process. My daughter (10) won a tournament because 2 people conceded, she was so happy, but I’ll be honest. Like Zan was saying, she’s now even more rigid about her card choices. I don’t know if that would have continued if she went 2-2 that night, but it’s a tough call as adults playing kids. I have done it before myself in practice, but now on league night I’ll give the younger player a foil card or something after and cheer on their good sportsmanship in the game
I paired in to my 11 year old at set champs and we played a fair game and I beat her. Didn’t feel great but I think giving her the win would have been worse.
I think purple steel is just fine midrange . Especially if you’re just a local / set championship player . It’s more than good enough . Same with blurple tbh

If the tournament purpose was to find a single winner then cool, but there shouldn’t have even been a top cut lol the whole point of this was to see who is better between EU and NA and the results show that EU beat NA more times so that’s it really. The consolation top cut is whatever
Zan I respect your opinion but you kind of just yapping with this overwatch and Marvel rivals thing I have well over 1000 hours on overwatch seeing as I’ve been playing since 2016 and I got almost 100 hours on Rivals already if the game isn’t for you then it’s not for you but saying that overwatch is better is absolutely insane
It’s not though. Overwatch has been constantly updated and is better with actual hit recognition. It’s technically a better game. Reason I didn’t like rivals is the hit registration seems wrong. Also, it’s not as balanced obviously. Popcorn game where overwatch can be a popcorn game or an e sports game if you’re good enough
