If you think this is only found in the U.S. Navy, you're sorely mistaken. Project 1232.2, code-named "Subr" (Russian Зубр; for bison, NATO designation: Pomornik class), is a class of large air cushion landing craft developed by the Soviet Navy during the Cold War and now operated primarily by the People's Republic of China. There are two boats still in service with the Russian Navy (as of 2007):
-770 Yevgeny Kocheshkov (previously MDK-50, named after Yevgeny Nikolayevich Kocheshkov).
    -782 Mordovia (previously MDK-94)

Yes, hovercraft have really come on since the British first invented them. We used them initially for civilian water transport but because they have such a light footprint and are unlikely to trigger mines etc they can deliver their payload safely inland.

William R. Bertelsen (May 20, 1920 - July 16, 2009) was an American inventor who pioneered in the field of air-cushion vehicles (hovercraft). Bertleseb was most notable for being the inventor of the Aeromobile, which is credited as the first hovercraft to carry a human over land and water.
In 2002, Bertelsen was named the "Father of the Air Cushion Vehicle" by The World Hovercraft Federation.
