Hoping for a deeper exploration of their journey through the 1970s. It's been criminally overlooked in all previous documentaries.
I'd say its unlikely they'll cover the more overlooked / taboo material, considering its Disney and bares a PG-13 rating :/
Agree completely. It would be a tragic disservice to this amazing band - and the genius of Brian Wilson - if the Sunflower, Surf's Up and Holland era isn't given its due.
@ElliotRobertsVideos
I hope they do. Your video on The Beach Boys Love You got me really interested in that period
Check out the Brian Wilson: Songwriter documentaries if you haven’t already for some more 70’s love.
pet sounds is amazing, but shortenin' bread is truly the magnum opus of the beach boy's legacy fr
I don't understand why Disney doesn't try to recoup some of it's losses by putting more of these in theatre first, before Disney+
Because it will do better in streaming
@josephtafur kind of sad, but you're right.
Because not enough people will watch it.
Maybe something of this format isn’t enough. Even if these men are legends
Because of contracts, If they hire you for a streaming show, they can’t legally profit from theatrical run or they will get sued. It’s the same the other way around, just look at how Scarlett Johansson sued them for putting Black Widow on streaming same day.
If only my Uncle John was still alive to see this. He was a HUGE Brian Wilson fan. So much so that the words "Wouldn't it be nice" are on his tombstone.
Would Uncle John be happy to see you now?
Also a fan of them stealing music
he would’ve loved “love and mercy”
Is he a mechanic?
@@BillBlazejowski Yes, he would, thank you very much.
Everybody gangsta until the Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds.
❤❤❤
Yeah. I adore the Beach Boys through Pet Sounds. By all accounts, it was not long after that album that Brian really lost his mind and the drugs took over. At that point I think he started to throw more stuff against the wall, and some of it stuck. But at the end of the day, holy shit what an amazing band on so many levels.
@@songswithryanYou're going to act like Sunflower didn't happen?
I think it's more like no one was gangsta. Nobody was saying in, say, 1961 "what an incredible artistic statement this is" when a new album came out. Albums, with few exceptions, were not taken seriously until the mid 60s. It was Brian, The Beatles, Dylan, etc that made people consider the album as an art form on a mass scale. All the "gangsta's" before that were making singles or were blowing people away live on stage.
the beach boys didn't record pet sounds, the wrecking crew did.pretty sad when a pop band has to use another band to play instruments that they should have been playing themselves, like bass, guitar, drums, and organ.of course the album wouldnt have sounded as good if the beach boys did it themselves.
When I was growing up in the 80's, they were still the sound of California. I remember being introduced to the music and hearing it so often, I didn't realize as a kid that what I was listening to was one to two decades old. They will always represent sunny summer California to me.
Motown(The Supremes), The Beach Boys and The Beatles truly shook the table, and made the 60’s the 60’s!
What about the byrds?
@@jesuselbailador8914 They moved the needle too for sure!
Lets be honest it was Dylan that changed everything.

So excited for this! The Beach Boys have been my favorite band since i was 5 years old. Their run from 64-67 is unassailable.

The Beach Boys do not get nearly enough recognition as the musical geniuses they were and they've always been my favorite rock & roll group. I'm thrilled we're FINALLY talking about The Beach Boys with the true respect they deserve!
I love them too but you can’t say they don’t get recognition 😂 I could fill up several paragraphs here with lists of their achievements and accolades ❤️
@@melanieballard110 I agree, the Beach Boys are one of the most lauded pop groups in music history for Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations you name it, rightly so.
Brian Wilson is the genius of the Beach Boys, after he left their most popular piece of crap is "Kokomo"
@@natalieallison6241 what you talking about Kokomo is great, better than their final "album" That's Why God Made the Radio (aka Nostalgia Pandering: The Album)

I was born in 78 but my parents raised me on the Beach Boys. I saw them every time they came to the area. I've followed their ups and downs but nothing, and I mean NOTHING says summer at the beach like their music. It's absolutely timeless. I play endless summer for my kids and the look in their eyes when their music plays is the same one I used to get. One that reflects joy, love, summer, and youth. I can't wait to see this
I was born in 1962, my oldest sister had Pet Sounds playing nonstop in our house… what wonderful memories that take me back in time with just a few notes…. I still play their Christmas Album each year!
You were born when America was still viciously racist, how does that make you feel?
Yo tambien pongo el album de Navidad todos los años. The Beach Boys es mi grupo favorito!!
Had no clue the immense talent of Brian until last ten years or so. Much better appreciation of him thanks to "Smile". Like most people I thought of them a a surf rock variety act but "Pet Sounds" and "Smile" will stand the test of time.
delve into his solo stuff plus the album tracks leave the hits alone and even listen to the unreleased tracks as well his hits doesn't showcase all his Genius
See the movie "Love & Mercy". Also totally enlightening.

Its about time. Brian Wilson is The Beach Boys.... Genius .
What a feeling it is to learn that the band you grew up with, the Beach Boys lived just a few streets away. Played little league in their back yard at Holly Park, learned to swim at Hawthorne High School. Never knowing they were so close. Last two times I went to see the Boys play I had women hitting on me. They couldn't help but notice I knew all the words and the timing to all their music. Somehow they found attraction in that. In my own world at the time just soaking in the sound the thrill of being their. My heart tells me there is one last Beach Boys album coming, with new music, not unfinished. What better shot in the arm could there be in this day and time. So much love....
Interesting that out of all the talking heads of the actual band members they feature in this trailer, the only one is Mike Love. Wonder if Brian was even asked about participating in this doc. If you're looking for something actually featuring Brian, watch Long Promised Road.
@@AlexSadof definitely makes me feel better. Wish the trailer made that more apparent.
I was thinking that too but the description says it features new interviews with all of the members
Al Jardine has a short snippet in the trailer at 1:21
Brian has pretty bad dementia so I’m not sure if he will be participating. There will probably be some older clips
How could they interview him now in his current state? I'm sure his contributions will be vintage interviews when he could still reminisce with some clarity.....
I heard Pet Sounds for the first time while on vacation in California. The combination really brought the music to life for me and I've never been the same.
God Bless Brian Wilson.
That Lucky Old Sun is a hidden gem too!
When you grow up in Southern California and listen to their music you kinda feel you want to live in their songs in some way, they are the reason why I loved the beach and fell in love with a surfer girl/beach bunny and have been with her for 45 years.
I grow up in Mexico but i feel you
Saw The Beach Boys September 21, 1964 in concert with Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, and Al onstage wearing red and white striped shirts. Played at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville, TN. Fabulous performance!
Pet Sounds ... Sgt. Peppers. Those two albums redefined 60s music, and elevated it to an art form.
True, but Pet Sounds kind of bombed when it was released.
@@john26660 Not among musicians
@@sunkintree I was referring to the point he was making about it redefining the 60's. It gained more notoriety later than in its day.
Can’t wait! I hope it’s 8 hours long and covers all the periods not just the 60s.
It will cover all periods
Hoping for an in-depth segment on Summer in Paradise
it covers the beginning to their comeback in the 70s and early 80s
I hope they didn’t gloss over David Marks being a big part of their early history, and an original Beach Boy. He is so often, conveniently, forgotten.
He was added as a replacement for Al, and then Al took his spot when he left school. Marks was a friend around for the first few albums. Getting some coverage of the 70s Beach Boys would be much more interesting in my opinion.
@@willmurphy3525 Technically, he wasn't a replacement for Al; Al played stand up bass on Surfin' and was never a "member" at that point, as that was more or less Brian's song. When they officially became The Beach Boys, Al was gone and Dave (and his parents) signed the initial recording contracts, not Al. Al was brought back in to pay bass when Brian started bowing out, and at times, when Brian was there, they were a three guitar band (with Al). After Dave was forced out by Murry, Al slid into Dave's old role. I am not discounting Al by any means, as he made huge contributions, but Dave is usually glossed over, treated as a stop gap between Al's tenures, and that simply was not the case.
David Marks is cool!
@@donaquinilator4959 Yes, he certainly is, and deserves more recognition than he gets.
Yes, David Marks, the 'Jewish Beach Boy'. He has had a good career in music since and has come back to play in the Beach Boys specials several times.
The Beach Boys practically built Capitol Records from the late '50s on, and then looked around and Capitol was now supporting The Beatles. And ONLY the Beatles, Brian thought.
the beach boys hadn't recorded anything in the 50's at all if you mean the 60's i can see that
In the 50s it was Nat King Cole who built Capitol. In fact the Capitol building in Hollywood is known as "The House Nat Built." In the 60's Capitol was propped up by The Beatles and The Beach Boys. What a lucky record label to have those 3 legendary artists.
I've loved the Beach Boys since the age of 5, and Pet Sounds is as close to perfection as any album can be.
Brian Wilson is such a talented but tortured soul I’m glad in his twilight years he was able to find peace. Such a shame that a man who made some of the most beautiful and happy music ever recorded lived thru so much trauma
Nothing can be as envious and destructive as mediocre people when confronted with genius.
I’m so excited that I’m listening to Beach boys music right now
I love the beach boys. I cannot wait. Such a complex band with a wild history
Looking forward to this. I really hope Dennis receives the credit he deserves. Pacific Ocean Blue is such a great album.
Dennis was the only Beach Boy who could surf! Was a real gear head too, was the inspiration for all those car songs. Was a self taught drummer, who played snare with his right hand. He deserves his own documentary, are you listening Ken Burns??
Bruce Johnson was the real car guy and wrote many of the car songs
I kind of feel sorry for Dennis because he fell in the trap of Charles Manson.

I introduced Beach Boys to New born son in 2005. 19 now and still singing along!
Me, too!! Born and raised on the oldies 😊
Besides sounds of Motown and Elvis
I’d say The Beach Boys captures that Americana sound
Ooooooh yes! Never stopped loving the Beach Boys, even through their bad years they were great.
I would actually go to a movie theater to see this. However, I won't get cable and Disney+ just to see this. I'm sure it's nothing new that we haven't seen in other BB docs, but I just happen to be a BB fanatic. My favorite band.
You don't need cable. if you can watch RUclips, you can get D+. and I believe you can get it for a month for less than the cost of a movie ticket.
They are holding screenings for this on May 21 at several imax theaters.
There's no surprises. But it's a really, really, loving bookend to a career that's seen them break free of their original image, go through some tough times, and then make peace with it. Along the way, making the most ground breaking pop ever. I wish Dennis and Carl could've seen this.
Gonna do a Double feature with this and Love and Mercy
Was thinking the same! 😌 Underappreciated biopic with one of my favorite Dano performances.
Same! Gonna watch this one first to be uplifted. Then I'm gonna be depressed.
I don't think this doc should be mentioned in the same breath as the amazing Love & Mercy. L&M is THE most amazing music biopic around. The fact that it was snubbed by The Oscars and the paint by numbers "Bohemian Rhapsody" got every award possible is a crime! This Disney doc looks to be as "same-old, same-old" as Bohemian was in its genre. There wont be anything new here.
I'm not a huge Beach Boys fan but I love some of the points made in this trailer: they and the Beatles needed each other (definitely pushed and challenged each other), they had amazing vocals, developed cutting-edge instrumentation, captured people's imaginations (I definitely felt a need to visit CA when I heard their songs). Legit.
My first concert was a Beach Boys concert. For my 10th birthday my mom and dad took me to Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Houston to see them play live. They were my favorite band at the time. They’re still one of my favorites to this day! So excited for this film!

Every generation deserves a retelling of the Beach Boys story.
Just told my husband about the movie. He smiled like he was a teen again.
Okay? No one fucking asked
The Beach Boys in the early 60's were more "the Brian Wilson band". The Beach Boys as a creative unit had their best time from 1967 to 1973. The big success of "Endless Summer" in 1974 and "Spirit Of America" in 1975 changed it all again and made them an oldies band. There were still good songs after that, but they became slowely, but surely a nostalgic act. They still are.
I really hope David Marks is in this. He deserves to have his story told
