The sky is blue. Why isn't everything blue?

- Why is the sky blue? Why isn’t everything blue as a result? Why is it whiter near the horizon? Why does the sky get orange at sunrise and sunset?
(at 6:46 it says "molecules" should say "droplets". A bunch of water molecules together behave as a larger thing)

Other notes
All the experts and scholory articles I looked at stated both rayleigh and mie scattering as responsible for the whiter horizon. That there are 2 explanations feels inelegant but I couldn’t find that one of them was false. I suspect each one is more dominant under different conditions.

I didn't even notice because dark mode is the norm for me
loli desu ne I use dark mode because having the whole screen lit white can be hard on my eyes, especially when ambient light is dim.
We're going to look in out sub boxes, one seemingly normal day in 2025, and there's going to be a video from this channel that melts your eyes with its art, whilst talking about the simplest question you can imagine. I can't wait.
yes yes yes yes yes, i have been waiting so long for this place to drop a

"BLUE hour"
Me: hahaha *popcorn*
This has to be the single best explanation why the sky is blue.
I sort of knew why... but now i REALLY know why.
Thank you for that.
I've checked many science videos on my journey through youtube, and although I had already seen people explaining things like "why the sky is blue", some things about the Rayleigh effect, and more, I kept watching videos on the topic. And today, after many videos on the topic, I came here for another one. And it's amazing. It's definitely the most complete yet concise, and simple yet beautiful video I've ever seen on this general topic. I feel weird giving compliments based on what many could see as just a "single dumb video", but I really don't feel that way.
The best part of this was the ending. I can't prove for certain that you're trustworthy, but I may have hundreds of signs that give you a positive mark. Requesting scientific views and daily observations from every person in the society is a central aspect. Another is doubting yourself, and to me, the way you did that was quite genuine. My background and previous learnings support the trustworthiness of your teachings. And your history on this channel also brings positive marks, and so does the sources on the description. We're all imperfect, and we change. So you don't have my trust guaranteed for eternity, but you're doing a very good job on this, and I believe that if you keep doing what you do the ways you do you may keep going far and maintain general trust and integrity.
So really, thanks, you teached me a lot, you showed me strong signs of scientific values, while also demonstrating some level of humility. Which also taught, and strengthened me. Have a good day, and thanks for this smile you put on my face while writing this.
thanks for writing the comment for me lmao
This video is an invaluable source of knowledge for any artist who wants to make their paintings realistic.
That last question gave me kurzgesagt and coffee break vibes
Totaly agree
Me too
Except I've yet to see a video claiming that This Place does not have reliable sources and is covering it up
Yeah, plenty of shade being thrown in that regard
That last bit felt like a blatant critique/satire, more than anything.
Notably (and only partially), a jab at the fact, that it's not the science part that should get you worried, but their influence over your opinions about unrelated stuff, that you should be wary of.
Like, the fact, that even this video itself is an attempt to shape your opinion of a situation/behavior of other pop science creators.
But it got me thinking. I am indeed lazy enough to not source through all of that science, even with -seemingly- simple and easily verifiable stuff, like this. And despite what my brain may tell me I can be -easily- fooled and misinformed in -many- some instances. And despite of that, I'd likely still watch this and other pop-science RUclips channels and read articles.
I know of this inherent vulnerability in this relationship and the fact, that was brought up by Veritasium (and others, before and after), that good entertainment piece about science and a good educational piece are not only entirely different things, but also often end up in direct conflict with each other. So, that's a tightrope walking between being fun and beneficial. Pop science doesn't make me smart, doesn't make better at science, and data in simplified form doesn't necessarily makes me more knowledgeable about the facts, as I may misinterpret or misremember the information (that may already be wrong).
And still, I'd likely do nothing about it in an immediate future, putting me at the mercy of fallible content creators, trends and algorythms and I am the only one to blame for it.
Probably, getting personally informed about a particular topic, being trained in skepticism and critical thinking might be not as exciting, like having a wealth of background trivia, but likely - much more useful. Knowing a piece of data, easily ingestable from a video piece isn't as useful, as being skilled at interpreting statistical data or knowing your ways in and out of science paper without making dangerous shortcuts.
Although, easier said, than done.
Trust me, I've seen tons of videos on why the sky is blue on RUclips but this has got to be the best one yet.
I don’t trust you, I love you.
Love without trust? That's not going to end well. I think this place should stay away from you.
I'm so happy you came back, your videos are great. I trust every word you say unconditionally, pi is totally 3.74!
in a book called “understanding light for visual artists” by Richard Yot it is also explained that shadows cast during daytime (with a relatively clear sky) will appear to be blue. this is because a tree (or a house, or a non-transparent elephant) is blocking the direct sunlight and only the indirect colors cast from the sky will come into the shadow area. therefore things actually are more blue we just don’t usually see it that way because our brains filter the blue to ascertain that the grass is still green. so while the sky isn’t quite a neon lamp it bounces its color onto other surfaces like any other surface. Weakly but definitely. this is however still the best representation i have seen of why the sky is blue. I don’t need a toothbrush. Just bought one.
Never seen a better video explaining Rayleigh scattering
I waited two centuries just to watch the best educational video dude on the tube
Thanks guy
This channel should have more views and subscribers than it has! Love it.
Okay I thought I already knew the answer, duh. But half in the video I realised I knew only half of it.
I had to teach this for 4 years. I love this stuff. I'm glad you exist; make more vids.
dang it, people already used the promo codes.. me no got brush D:
Great video, but you completely missed a big aspect of this- our brains.
Things in shadow ARE blue as a result of the sky being blue, but we don't perceive that as blue because our brain does an internal "white-balance correction" so that we perceive the true colors rather than the color cast from the sky.
If you go out on a clear sunny day (with lots of blue sky), it's not too difficult to see that things in the shade actually do look pretty blue.
I remember when I was really young I asked my mom why the sky was blue. She told me the sky is reflective and is reflecting the blue from the ocean. The joke's on her though, I had a small book that told me how rainbows are made so I already knew why the sky was blue and was one of those annoying kids who would ask questions knowing the answer already so I could call correct you.
Every now and then I remember how much I like this fucking channel
The thought of what the sky could’ve looked like is pretty existential if you ask me. Imagine how stunning things could look if we could see space at all times. Wow
This is sooooo brilliant!.. You have a great way of explaining physical reality to lay people .. and, speaking from experience, even aging Physics & Engineering majors can enjoy it too... ;)
I 100% support this message.
I've encountered your videos in my recommended feed multiple times now but now that I've watched some, you've earned my sub. Nice work man :)
I already knew all about Rayleigh scattering and whatnot but this video is just so well made and balanced and humorous that I watched the whole thing anyway. Shame it took so long for RUclips to recommend your videos to me.
I legit found your channel an hour ago and you bless me with this upload. Thank you kind sir.
1 out 5 dentist say "f*ck me, is it for a beaver?" Dear god, this place is the best thing on the internet.
Hi thisplace, this is the first video of yours that I've stumbled upon and the combination of your humour, art style and topic had me hooked. You sir, have my like and my subscription. I look forward to seeing more of you!
I have learnt more in 10 minutes than I would learn in an hour of a physics lesson.
Your old videos are great, but something about this one was mega entertaining keep it up!
That's the best explanation I've got!!!
"..and rayleigh, because, people have names." lol
This channel has such sporadic uploads but I still love it
When you discover a new awesome creator, and realize he makes 2 videos a year...
I love your sponsors, it's the best.
So when blue light scatters more that means UV scatters more than that. Explaining why we need UV blocking filters for cameras otherwise we see the massive UV hase. Also during eclipses we get a 360 degree sunset because there is less close air scatter and more futher air scatter, and only longer wavelengths can reach our eyes/photodetectors. Neat
I'm so happy you're posting again!
I think that "creepy music" from Space Odyssey is Ligeti's Requiem.
You’re so underrated. Love your videos... erudite and quirky at the same time. I think RUclips is Rayleigh scattering your rays :)
Nooo, I thought the sky is blue because atmosphere is blue. And sky on horizon is white because air is moist and moisture is white. Those were simple times... Now I know why sky is actually blue but don't know why blue light scatters more. If it's because of wave length, why isn't it purple? Purple is closer to the outside of the rainbow, so it must bend even more than blue, right?
Our eyes can't see purple very well. And the sun doesn't really emit alot of purple. So it is purple to mantis shrimps, but not us.
I think you are my most favorite RUclipsr in the existence of RUclips. You make learning fun.
The RUclips Educator commentary in this video is spot on.
I love your videos so much you have no idea. Unique ideas, easy to understand, some depth, good jokes. It' perfect.
As xkcd put it, the sky is blue because air is blue and planes stay up with thousands of tiny birds in the wings, flapping hard.
Stoked you're back!
Huh, why didn't RUclips notify of this upload?
well done my friend. Subscribed!
Also, the Space Odyssey sound, never fails to creep me out. +1 for that.
Just want you to know that sometimes i want to feel nice and warm and i lay down, got me self a This Place video and enjoy your voice and words a big thank you and a loving hug!
Thank you, this place. This video is beautiful. Your ability to amalgamate concepts from physics to philosophy is staggering. This is true art.
This was much more helpful than those pictures of sunlight going through a prism and somehow making the sky blue.
My heart is beating, my eyes are wide with anticipation. Jesse Agar, the most captivating personality of our time, has posted another video. He’s back for real.
nice bro, and i also respect that you made the video below 10 minutes. there was some other guy that i just assume you got inspired by who made the same kind of "can you trust X person" video but he made his video above 10 minutes so it became clear he was just in it for the money and not to deliver some kind of criticism
As someone who likes physics and does art as a hobby, I thought I knew all there is to know about this, but I learned quite a few new things!
Very understandable. Also very cute voice, a little bit a bit more asmr with the sound effects and of course the animation is a delight.
Amazing video! Small question: the inspiring music doesn't seem to match the one in the link. Is this is a mistake?
Wow, I missed this channel. You explain things so well! Thank you for your hard work : )
This guy really just made a 9:58 video. Well done for not giving a
2:11 they call this *really* scattering
Love this! The sky does produce a lot of blue light. The sun is just so many times brighter than the blue ambiance that it, combined with the bounced light from the earth and objects around you, makes it very faint.
Glad you're back.
Blue: I'M THE SCATMAN
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
We may have lost Vsauce, but we now have this place. Such a pleasure watching the way you explain science.
After that outro, I tried to subscribe to this channel, because, yes, I believe you can be trusted. Thing is, I had already subscribed.
I love this channel so much
Link to jazzy drumming at the end? Also awesome video dude, and I trust thee because thouest explanations seem very very reasonable and clear.
Love your videos. Don’t stop again!
I trust you not to disappoint - dunno bout those other things, but I like it. Words are hard.
This place isn't your only channel is it? I think I found a different channel ages ago. I found that video on reddit or something, I remember chatting with you about it but I am unsure now. I am pretty sure I am subbed to that channel too!
Great channel
Soo underrated
It merits a hell lot more views
Keep up the good work :)
I don't trust you at all, but you're still incredibly interesting and fun to watch! I feel that these days on youtube, It's not what you say so much as how you say it. ^v^
You know it's a good video when I go to like the video and it's already liked.
I liked the video before, and I kept watching and I forgot that I had liked the video.
6:46 did you mean microscopic water droplets (like fog) or something like that? Because water molecules being microscopic is redundant
Supposed to say "droplets" instead of "molecules". It was "droplets" through the entire production process. I did a rewrite of that sentence (but I don't write rewrites down I just record them) and I must have changed that word for some reason.
@@ThisPlaceChannel Oh, ok. It's fine :)
8:03. Many familiar names in that subscriptions list. I'm not surprised to see them here. 😉
I dont know why but I found the "more questions" bit accompanied by the music from 2201 a space odyssey at 5.50 hysterical
2:17 "Because people have names." That's fair.
I didn't want to watch this video because I knew the answer. But it auto played and you hooked me in with your presentation. Good job.
The answer to trust question is that I can't trust you. I can only hope that either I will catch the mistakes or lies you made or that I will be corrected in the long run. That's how understanding works or at least that's the impression I got.
I'm a painter and I actually found this really helpful for understanding why Lighting Does The Weird Things
I will trust every youtuber that make 9:58 video and doesn't lengthen it for the 10 min mark
One of the best videos in explaining why is the sky blue!! 😆🤓
Very well explained, stunning illustrations and interesting subject, well done :)
My dude, you are too good for this world.
i love this channel so much arghhh
jesse you’re a legend
Ok, this will be the go to video for me now, because I knew all of this once, but I always mix it up or forget details again and I'm questioning everything I know about it and feel unsure so I need to relearn it again to be sure about it and months later this just repeats! So thank you for this!
But I have one more question: When it's a bright nice day without many clouds and you look straight up you can see that the sky has a darker spot right above you. It's like the tip of a dome.
Why is that? I'm gonna find that out now, but still wanted to leave this question here.
I'm an artist trying to understand the colors around us, thanks for clearing things up
gotta say that this is the first time i heard "golden hour" or "blue hour"
Hey why don’t you have any sources for the banana
Sometimes I get a little bummed because I feel like I'm not as fascinated by science as I once was, and I miss that. And then I find a video like this. Dang, science is cool.
Thanks for making more videos! I went back and watched all your videos and "liked" them all.
The greatest video maker uploaded!!!
Great channel, very entertaining and good explanations! I hope you can make the quantity go up! I would love to see a video from you explaining radiation, and especially alpha/beta/gamma because that is confusing stuff (only gamma is EM). Hope you can make a living out of this! You have a unique style!
I'm so happy to find answers that I liked this video before it even loaded
one extra thing this video doesnt address:
if lower frequencies scatter more, then why isnt the sky violet?
finding the answer took me down an internet rabbit hole, but from what i can tell, i think it's mainly
1) the sun doesnt emit all frequencies equally. it emits less violet light compared to the other colours
2) human eyes are worse at detecting violet than blue
3) the word for "purple" is ambiguous in english. it can refer to what happens when both red and blue (but not green) frequencies hit our eyes, which would require a bimodal distribution of light. the sun does not do this. "purple" can also refer to a specific band of high-frequency light at the tail end of the frequencies that are human-visible. however, many english-speakers today normally call this "dark blue", rather than "violet" or "purple"
I just discovered your channel and i already love your videos, pls make more k thnx
That is the best sponser yet!
Stuff being made bluer by light from the sky is an actual thing, and a bit of a problem for photographers using flash.
The color of xenon flash is roughly similar to midday direct sunlight, but if you use unmodified flash in a shady place that still gets a lot of light from the sky your flash will look yellower than the ambient light.
You can use a CTB (color temperature blue) filter over your flash to better match your surroundings.
HES ALIVE
The ad was as entertaining as the video... but not as interesting. :D Keep up the great work.
Juuuust the right level of engaging!
