    I just ordered this tracker. Have wanted it for a long time, but just never bought it. It's just about Milky Way season, so I can't wait to shoot it using this tracker!

    I have both this Skytracker Pro and a Skywatcher Star Adventurer, and in my experience the little Skytracker Pro performs just as well as the bigger heavier Star Adventurer. On calm nights I've been able to push it to 2 minute exposures at 135mm with sharp stars.

    I've been using the iOptron Pro for about a year and a half, the only issue I've had is shooting in portrait(slippage, with a heavier camera), and for longer exposures at a higher zoom(200mm on APS-C, over 60 seconds). All in all it's a really solid device.

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад

      William Beam Thats not too bad of an issue... so far I really like it and I’m excited that I can cut some weight and save space compared to my older version. Good to hear that other people have good results!

    I picked up the MSM and while I think it's gonna work well, I cannot say the purchase experience was the best. In fact, it was the first PayPal dispute that I had opened. Of course, they were pretty responsive once I did that but not really how I wanted my experience to go.
    Really appreciated the review of the iOptron. Well done. Gonna surf a few more of your videos.

    Congrats on 20K!! Keep it up! ...Ok...Do Not Buy the Move-shoot-Move; as I've mentioned previously mine was DOA...arranged to send back for replacement, then changed my mind -just asked for refund instead, which was agreed to...but No refund and no tracker...paypal wouldn't refund because time lapsed beyond 1 month and no way to verify return delivery...I'm out 250 for nothing but a HUGE Pia..buyer beware. I have since got a SAM, and super happy with it, but also heard the lightest smallest is the Syrp Genie Mini which can be programmed to star tracking...One more for you Mike!

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад

      That sucks about the refund which is part of the problem/risk when ordering overseas and you have long wait periods. I didn't know about the syrp genie mini being able to track stars. I have an older syrp genie and I can rotation it to follow the Milky Way for a time lapse but it isn't tracking the stars like an actual star tracker does. I'll have to look into the MINI.

    Hi, Mike! Thank you for sharing your very informative videos! And after some time, what do you prefer to use in field? iOptron Star Tracker Pro or Sifo MSM? Thank you I advance!

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад +1

      Viktor Gabyshev I would lean towards the newer iOptron which is a little bulkier but just as light. It also seems to be more reliable especially when I don’t have time to waste when shooting the Milky Way. If my MSM tracker didn’t have quality control issues I would say that would win over the ioptron but since I have issues with it makes me perfect iOptron. If I was back country camping and need to save space I would probably take MSM but I don’t do that as often.

    Hey Mike, have you ever looked at the Polarie Vixen? I've had it for a couple of years and it does the job.

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I've heard a lot of great thinks about that tracker as well! I wish the price would come down a bit to compete with trackers in the $250 range and I also wish they would do some updates to it (like a built in battery) and a light weight base.

    I just ordered the move shoot move 2 weeks ago I was able to pick DHL as delivery option and it arrived in 4 days. This is my first tracker question on how to use it do I need to attach the included cable into the hotshoe and back into the tracker.

    • @Milkywaymike

      Fotog Mike that cable is if you are using the tracker for a panning time lapse. You don’t need to use the hot shoe cable when using the tracker for star tracking

  • @kennyle8640
    @kennyle8640 5 лет назад +1

    This is a great video. I have the Vixen Polarie kit and everything is built for form and function. However, its max payload of 2 kgs (4.4 pounds) really limits putting some DSLR body and lens configurations I'd like to try so you looking at some of these kits with more headroom is REALLY helpful. Aside from the very quality feel of the Vixen Polarie system, I like is the ability to power it completely via USB (mini-USB; presumably it was designed prior to the ubiquity of micro-USB). In fact, I can take out the AA batteries and plug in a power bank and it works like a champ from my testing. Is it possible (powering the tracker even though the internal battery is completely depleted) to do this with any of the kits you have above? Sorry if I missed you pointing it out previously.

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад

      Kenny Le yeah you can plug an external battery pack to it.

    • @kennyle8640
      @kennyle8640 5 лет назад

      @@Milkywaymike Thanks. I'll have to look into one of these. Hopefully, they're a bit more affordable than the Vixen Polarie. With the various attachments, the Vixen kit climbs up near $800 or more if you go all out.

    Hey Mike, can you talk a little about your technique to polar align this? I find that really challenging which really kills my exposure time...thanks

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  4 года назад +1

      Jamel Bland I talk about my setup tips in this video. I’m using the older iOpton in the video but my setup is the same:
      1) level the with the iOptron facing north.
      2) I use the iOpton App for the exact location to place the North Star on the scope.
      3) I use a green laser to help point my iOptron at the North Star and then I put the scope in and fine tune it.
      4) you can put the camera on first to prevent the iOpton from getting knock out of position. Sometimes the weight of the camera and lens will move the North Star out of the proper location if you add it to the camera after setting it up. ruclips.net/video/iXVVBlvlhbE/видео.html

    • @Donadoney
      @Donadoney 4 года назад

      Milky Way Mike yeah Mike, I appreciate the response. It’s the green laser part that’s critical and I don’t get. I can get an initial position on Polaris, using the tiny scope on the upper left portion of the tracker. Fine tuning is hard. Sometimes I am not even sure if I have the correct star. Seems like that’s some practice and some luck!

    Are you still using a Syrp Genie? I just scored a Syrp Magic Carpet Carb Fiber short track and extensions and Genie I on Ebay - separate purchases made it a complete kit. I am going to Utah to Capitol Reef NP in August to shoot some MW images and try some panos too. Any newbie advice?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I still have the Genie I and a magic carpet as well! Definitely do some test time lapse around your house to get familiarized with the menu / setting buttons. There should be a descent amount of tutorial videos on youtube as well in regards to that set up. Just binge them and run some test... Hopefully you have some good ND filters for your lens so you can take some long exposure time lapses!

    Hi Mike.. I'm about to buy the Sky tracker as I shoot mostly with wide angle lenses but I wanted to know with the limited weight issues, have you had any issues with wearing the motor in the tracker out since you made this video?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  4 года назад +1

      So far so good! I’m still using that tracker without issues, however this year I switch to a mirrorless camera system so the weight just cut in half. I was originally putting 4.5lbs on the tracker (nikon d800 with 14-24 3.8 lens). ... now I’m using a Z camera and lens for a total weight of 2.5 lbs

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 лет назад +2

      You do have to adjust ever so often especially if you are not perfectly level with your tripod. Also sometimes when I am moving the camera around it will throw it off of alignment a little so over a 30 - 60 minute period it might be best to re-align. If you don't want to readjust so often then you really need to weigh the tripod down and get it perfectly level as well as be cautious moving your camera around while attached to the iOptron. Bigger and heavier trackers are less likely to need to be aligned so often but that would defeat the purpose of light weight travel... so it's a trade off.
