Why do charities always spend ridiculous amounts of money on doing everything BUT the charitable work?So much is wasted. So I donate to a friend who wanted to feed homeless people. He bought a cheap truck and 3 nights a week he, his family and some volunteers took a truck full of hot food to people on the streets. Five yrs later he has 4 trucks and a roster of volunteers (me included), gets donated toiletries, and goes to thrift stores begging for the bedding, furniture and clothing they find too yuck to sell, takes it home to wash and salvage. All free of charge, all volunteers, while he holds down a full time job. THAT is a charity.

Imagine if they had used that money, the time, the volunteers, the energy in actually HELPING PEOPLE in need. But no, they wanted balloons. Eye roll.
I think the same really
Plot twist they used the money from the people paying to get in for charity
Besides it was run by a charity they must of have
Add to the fiasco the amount of trash that ended up impacting wildlife who didn't know not to injest the material.
I found out recently too that helium is not renewable. And I just the video also mentions this-I can’t believe how much helium is wasted everyday
Was born in 1983 and my parents always hated the United Way, as long as I can remember. Now I have some idea why they hated them for so long. The waste and destruction from this, not to mention irresponsibility with donor funds, is truly epic.
The whole time I was thinking, "what a waste." ☹

As a professional helicopter pilot, I cannot count how many times I've had to avoid big bunches of balloons that some careless idiot just let loose. The silvery mylar balloons are especially dangerous as they last much longer and keep going and going. Hang on to your balloons people!

I remember releasing balloons in Middle School as part of the 80's anti-drug campaign. Each student wrote their name on a balloon and we all released them at once. I always wondered what happened to the balloon I released. Hopefully, it didn't kill anybody.
You murdered a lot of people
You are crazy
Nobody will ever Like you
Someone found the balloon with your name. Then used it to smuggle heroin
It's all good till you releasing like 1g or a million balloons at once but 1 balloon is fine it be fun to see ware one balloon lands
I remember that fiasco. But I didn't know about the two people that died because of it, and I didn't know about the horse farm either. Obviously much more tragic than I originally thought it was.
Note to self: Never give any money to charity organisations that use my hard earned money for balloons instead of charity.
Or to CEO's with ridiculous salaries!
Many times the festivities are covered through tax deductible donations of goods to be used for fund raising. So there are a lot that don't spend hardly anything on fundraising.
@Sailing Orca I'm sure the balloons and helium are made in China. I would not have given UW a red cent knowing dam well the waste those balloons created all over the surrounding areas, not to mention waterways where birds can get trapped by them.
Exactly. And United Way is the worst. Most of their money goes to pay their CEO and executives.

So freaking true!
Can't tell if this is a dis or a compliment
I remember seeing this stunt when I was a kid and even than I thought it was a dumb idea. Not one person had the foresight to think where these balloons would end up?
Did they think these balloons would continue floating up into space? 🤦🏾♂️ They could've took that $500k, put it in a Vanguard mutual fund, waited 30 years, and they'd have over a billion dollars for their little charity.
No. There were perhaps many many many of them that knew or at least suspected it was a bad idea and for many reasons. However, most were probably so selfishly excited about the vision of 2 million balloons being let go that they didn't care and kept their mouths shut.
Then there are those adults who, when part of an organization of any kind, their careers being more important than their ethics, will keep their mouths shut so as to not stand out as the corporate traitor. It doesn't matter if it's a private company or a not-for profit. This one event should go to show you, just how few people in a society like ours are unwilling to do anything at all about something they see as a bad idea or action. Especially in a culture such as ours where seeking for oneself materialism, abundance, money, and power are valued higher than helping others. And you can bet that many in that office of the United Way were more hyped for a successful money making event and what it would mean for their careers rather than the purpose of helping poor people.
Ours is a bad road we've been traveling, especially as it has intensified in the past three plus decades. It doesn't bode well for our future as a cohesive country, nor for the world as well.
That is the problem in this scenario they kept thinking about whether or not they could.that they didn’t stop to think if they should.
'...ignites a basic childlike joy...'

I can only imagine how many water life died swallowing balloon rubber after this thoughtless catastrophe.
@GT Classic Plastic
Imagine fining a child, just stupid.
It's better to just ban this
@GT Classic Plastic Stop driving your auto and I'll stop buying balloons.
@GT Classic Plastic Your issue with the balloons was pollution. Your car pollutes the air far more than a child with a balloon, yet you want to fine a person w/ a balloon $1000. So, I'm telling you that you're a hypocrite because you drive a huge pollution machine and should be fined $20,000 every time you turn the ignition. Therefore, get off your high horse Tonto or stop driving your car. Do I need to be any more clear for you Dollface?

Well I always wondered what would happen if you released 1,429,643 balloons... now I know! LOL! I really enjoy your Chanel ! Thanks!
I bought a helium tank and helium balloons. I sent messages all over in ZipLok bags. I used three balloons for each bag: 1 balloon fully inflated, one 3/4 inflated, and one 1/2 inflated. This allowed the message to gain rapid altitude and when the first balloon popped, there was still two left, gaining altitude. When the second on popped, the third balloon caused a slower descent. Released on a windy day, the balloons travelled 50 miles to another town. It was fun to hear how the people found the bags so far away.
