In this episode, Ryan interviews former Neuralink Engineer, Han Zhang. Han worked at Neuralink from November 2018 - December 2019.

Time stamps might work. What's the star date? Planetary alignment with surrounding stars. Why does "Planet of the Apes" come to mind as I know alot of the alienation and stories of unfamiliar technology of earth were passed off as "Extraterrestrial beings".

Wow, awesome interview. I have an engineering background and I’m fascinated by lithography for CPUs (and how it took 30 years of research to get EUV Lithography). It was nice to hear someone with actual experience with it.

I find this all so very scary. We have gone way too far with this.
But if we all get artificial brains and bodies then we can all live like Bender from Futurama. We won't have a be responsible for anything and we can all be as greedy, glutinous, lustful, and dangerous as we want. We will all be immortal gods and goddesses! Can you imagine the power, so much power. But weak and feeble organic humans will no longer be born, they will be grown, and when some super genius decides to make a replicator toy for their child, and the replicators take over and start consuming metal and rip open our artificial bodies, then we will be forced to live out the rest of our days in a weak and pitiful organic body like the Asgard from Stargate. I'm just being humorous but I actually totally agree with you, but unfortunately the vast greater majority of humanity wants to indulge in it's sinful nature. Sinfulness gives us so much pleasure and actually taking care of ourselves and living a healthy life is just so boring. There's nothing like a near death experience that will make people feel more alive, and actually dying and then coming back to life again, well that just makes people feel like a god or goddess.
Thousand of lives are prolonged and saved every year thanks to heart implants such as automated defibrillators and pacemakers. I wouldn’t think of it as a way to help people “stop consuming so much sugar”, it’s more about helping people with severe neurodegenerative diseases such as an advanced Parkinson’s or even the possibility of healing extensive brain trauma, which with our current technology and understanding would just result in the loss of whatever motor function was affected.
Can't wait for what the future holds.
I agree. The first humans with this technology implanted will be 99% human 1% AI. In very short order that ratio will be reversed.
An organic human will soon be a minority, at a minimum. It is my opinion they won’t be allowed to co exist as a large percentage do not easily conform to a system of control - which is clearly where we are heading.
I fully expect that by the end of the decade I won’t be welcome in my environment. Strange times.

human enlightenment should be done naturally. this is not natural. with true enlightenment you should be able to achieve what the neuralink is supposed to do naturally! this would be considered spiritual bypassing and God knows what or who would be able to tap into this and deceive/control you.

Wow, incredibly interesting background of studies & project orientation Han has had! He seems very focused, and clear on many aspects of BMIs. Thanks for sharing this with us 🙏🏽 That last point was very philosophical & makes me think of the cannabis plant 🌱 for tonnes of generations it moved around with us, was banned & then brought back into the light 💡 w/ scientific research 🧪 When I grew up (as a teenager) it was something one felt had to be hidden, now you can go to licensed dispensaries 🍁which test all batches of products for banned substances, heavy metal + they present cannabinoid content in % and milligrams. So now there’s access to “Okay I want to have 1mg CBD & 1mg THC in a spray format (of just cannabis, + other natural essential oils for flavour sometimes ie mint & cocoa) , before going for a workout” instead of the old hidden way of just 💨 Bongs & Joints of if your lucky medicinal grade plant matter. Moving from that dark ages the poor little 🐒 underwent to a path of enlightenment ☮️❤️🖖🏽

This guy is well spoken and obviously very smart. I still don't understand why he quit after only one year 🤔?? He seems like the kind of person Neuralink needs.
Sounds like the speed in which they need to work is the main contributor to his departure. Of course I won't claim to know, but Han made a side comment about how all of Elon's companies need to work at a high pace. That could have been too stressful to contend with.
Elon musk is a slave driver long story short. Burn and dump. Plenty more where they came from kinda mentality. Hence why he can't keep to deadlines, because all the best leave.. leaving only the desperate/delusional behind. Which with enough hard work, will get it done.. eventually
@ben esterberg you clearly don't know what you're talking about. The best Tesla and Nuralink engineers have left. Just look at their turn over rate, and the people starting their own companies. Lex Friedman has many on his podcast. What good is all the money in the world of you don't have a life to live? Also, if they leave within 5years because they don't want to work every hour under the sun, the "shares" don't amount to much. The people you've mentioned from Space X are original employees which have been promoted.. hence they're not worked to death.
Yes the greatest tend to be obsessed in the field but a vast majority of those people never had bosses. Tesla himself didn't last long under management, Einstein had his own team. They work at their own pace and get shit done. I have no intentions of being the best Plumber, because of family and social reasons. Life isn't all about work and you're a fool if you think one person can change everything.. the best you can hope for is leaving the foundations and eventually we'll get there. Then it boils down to, what is your definition of world changing. Wake the fuck up

Congratulation for your discussion, it's a passionate topic. In the reality of today's life we can guess that someone is lying by analyzing the non verbal, but we never know for sure the intention of the person, it's really important that we can unified ourselves, than maybe by being able to really feel the emotions of someone else we can reach full consciousness, but there's important questions to raise : is it possible that we don't have the same goals or intention between each others, thus how to solve this bigger problem after all? We have to live in harmony with each other's but maybe some people will always look for destruction?

Han Zhang says something fascinatingly true and which we still don’t really understand, let alone predict: « strange EMERGENT phenomena can happen when you interconnect things ». It refers to complex systems but not only: to complex dynamic systems with many interconnected feedback loops. Reminds us of chaos theory, far from equilibrium thermodynamics, origin of life on earth, and more - all these aspects being themselves connected. I find it fascinating that an engineer like Han, whose job is to be very precise and analytical, also has in mind the synthetic/synergistic (as opposed to analytic) aspects of things. I guess AI and BMI forces this on us. He does say that many disciplines need to come together to do these things.
About uploading one’s consciousness in some digital AI system: the problem is, how can we upload somethingwe don’t understand, or that might not even physically exist other than as a « mental model », a representation that the brain builds? And then there is that other aspect of Life that animals, as well as humans, have but machines don’t: sentience, or the inner experience of being alive, of seeing colours, of feeling pain or happiness, of loving someone, of spirituality, etc. I don’t know about the future, but it would be truly surprising if an AI machine, even one with all our personal knowledge and memories, could be made to « experience » any of these. But who knows: BMIs do not , it seems, replace a biological system but enhances it in the cognitive (and biomechanical) realm: the biological individual still has his or her biological brain… and heart to experience life with!

At 30:37, I don't think it's possible for an artificial human brain to be more energy efficient than an organic human brain. It's so compact and precise and elastic. Especially considering the elasticity of the organic human brain, I just don't think it's possible for an artificial human brain to match that.

I used to run and ride horse... I can’t imagine being bed bound... but good can be made bad... I agree we need regulations...
virginia allison peck I’m sorry to hear about your back. I do see the good in this technology but I don’t believe we’ll have regulations on it until it’s blatantly obvious to enough people exactly what could happen, particularly when you combine it with nanotechnology in pharmaceuticals. We do also have to take better responsibility over our own lives. The only problem with this kind of power on a global scale (remote controlled citizens), too late mightn’t allow any chance of us even realizing it’s happening. We already can’t see how we can and are being manipulated by media and it obviously not to the majority’s benefit. The amount of tyranny that’s rampant in the world today is shocking and not surprising there’s an intense push to make this technological potential a reality.

There is a specific type of circuit design which is called Neuromorphic circuit design with spiking neural network computation which enables fast computation for AI. Basically it is the silicon brain of the AI. A similar approach can be done for silicon human brain. If you want to know more information about it, I highly recommend you to watch the Human Brain Project workshops on RUclips.

No, he would not install it in his brain, however he could have already have it installed in other peoples brain, just for experiment, just like the experimental vaccine.

Imagine that we will be people written in history as the ones who started everything ... and i mean everything ... imagine those possibillities with super A.I with 7 bilions of brains of informations in it combined ... i just hope to see at least fraction of that in my lifetime
That’s not how the trajectory of scientific discovery should be viewed tho like every generation works off the shoulders of giants. Just because we are higher up in the exponential curve of information complexity and completeness, it was only possible because of the collective mind working in tandem throughout generations.

Many psychopaths go into the military. They cant feel fear, anxiety, empathy, etc. So this wouldnt affect them. Actually, the military is a way for them to eliminate boredom.

- The other day I watched a head camera view of a motorcycle ride through Kampala, on my nice 27" screen. It was fascinating to see everything as if I was there. I missed the drama of the physical sensations, but I felt comfortable, living relaxed at home, while the person doing it was in a hot area with dust and costs and dangers of traffic, theft, malaria and covid.
- I've spent a lot of time in VR (HighFidelity, Sansar, AltSpaceVR, Virbella). They are thrilling in their way. I've had marvelous times, e.g. dancing to fabulous DJ music until exhausted (in my bedroom), and being at fabulous conventions, discussions, tours of glaciers, undersea, space, etc. VR will prob within ten years be seriously competing for realism with actual reality, at a thousandth or less of the costs.
@@BruceThomson do you hear about Brain Dance in Cyberpunk 2020 (and it adaptation as computer game Cyberpunk 2077)? Because with better VR and few implants for touch etc. and we are close to it. It will make whole business for creators, as people today stay on Instagram for too long, with full experience it will be more addictive.

35:50 This is why i began to learn how to accept all perspectives, and i'm making sure me going out in the world and expanding myself will not be a threat to anyone. Once i get a perspective on most/all things then i can learn how to help people comunicate so everybody will get what they want, as long as it doesnt hurt other people, AND it wont work on force to sacrifice someone for good to the others. I belive there shloud be 2 rules: No forcing death under any circumstances, and no infridging on peoples freedoms as long as they dont hurt others directly. Difficult to "tell a story" using a puppet having one string. But using ten stings, the puppet comes to life. Identifying one spike wouldn't tell much of a story. One think I’m excited about is Matrix-level VR or Sword Art Online level VR as he said it is theoretically possible. Already knew that but it’s amazing to hear from the experts that are working on it.
Edit- Most experts (Mary Lou Jepsen, Elon Musk, Gabe Newell, Ray Kurzweil, etc.,) working/directly involved in this field predicts that whole brain interface is 10-15 years away; 2035 at least if we account for any rate of progression. The main point is that it will happen in most of our lifetime. Can’t wait!!
Matrix-level, in other word starting and living an entire life without having the memories of your actual life and all that in the time span of a day or less in our world. yeah it is actually possible but we are very far from it. for now!

I didn’t mean the movie matrix in its entirety but just the Virtual Reality concept used there and not sure about the time perception manipulation bit. But, whole brain stimulation Virtual Reality like Matrix and SAO is way close as law of accelerating returns applies to it. Experts predict it by 2035-2040 so just have to wait and see.
@@Kitora_Su having your memories from your life is a reliability of information that your brain automatically use. that simple but important information make the game, a simple other game that you play. But having your brain think that you have no other memories but the ones you build up overtime in the Virtual world would make the game more real than any other game you'd ever play. and when you finish it your memories of your real life would be unlocked and that experience would be the most realistic experience you could have. they'd probably make it a choice but it would be an insane way to live another life in a day.
@@adminotaku4799 ah I see what you meant. Yeah it would most definitely be an optional thing in the future if it would be allowed at all since you know locking memories intentionally even for a certain period of times calls for panic over most people currently.
So, this feature might indeed be further ahead than *normal whole brain stimulation VR*. People’s mentality would be a lot different at that time compared to current time. Although I do see them adopting normal Matrix/SAO level immersion VR concept for the upcoming future.
Maybe there will be a similar timespan like right now where we will see the ‘memory feature’ being discussed but, currently the hype is all about reaching Full-Dive immersion with all senses (true sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) in an artificial body while the current body is just lying on the couch or bed in a sleep induced state (kinda like super high level lucid dreaming) as it is hugely mass aspired(typically mostly fans of these virtual reality shows and in general but also game developers and experts as well(one such example from the experts community is Gabe Newell, Ray Kurzweil and Elon Musk).

My question is how do they stop plaque build-up on the micro-filiments in the brain that may interfer with the neuralink's working over time? Will they need to be removed surgically? How many surgeries will a person have in their lifetime to keep them working optimally?
They are working to not bulid-up it, so we must wait for official information, and it must base on real case (eg in pig), but I would assumed that it would last as long as you live, only battery to change, but it would not remove electrodes.

All the 3 ways of etching and building on the silicon wafer resulting in these godly impressive chips yielding technology via extremely finite molding /malleability only result in the “muscle” or “battery computer” part. So software is absolutely incredible when you think about it those two things together with a source of power = worlds modern structure
So the chips process the data.. where does the data come from another chip? Like how are basic phones internally equipped with data computable by the silicon chips without receiving transmissions wirelessly!

This is really important if we do not want to see in the near future humanity conceive of itself by creating a greater gap between the poorest who will not have access to this technology and the richer who will become richer and less organic. because that will obviously bring an apocalyptic scenario.
This is of particular concern when looking at the demographics showing countries like India who's remain in the last countries with a massif younger population who could provide a huge amount of data to advance way faster all kinds of diverse applications related to this technology.
Till then I continue my effort to make sure as B-Borg become a right and not only a privilege for the richest of this world to avoid an apocalyptic situation that could bring humanity to its own destruction.

Awesome, the last thingbhe spoke about regarding the monkeys, we as a society already do that on a number of levels, in think it would be interesting to explore fear and bias in the brain as a collective, how to overcome without inflicting or triggering certain responses that are inbuilt into us humans wether as a social conditioning mechanism or neurologically survival based.
Pushing the fear frontier in aspects that doesnt endanger us physically, say the ones that psychology deals with where we know a certain amount of information but simply cannot get more information in a natural way without altering the participant in an unnatural way(ie pharmaceutical),but rather re directing brain signals in a way that overides usual responses that would make it otherwise illogical or trigger warnings,but have a level of comprehension relating to the task or feeling etc.
