What the "rhythm" circuit in Jazzmaster and Jaguars actually do is give you two options for your tone stack (vol and tone controls) one option is the usual 250k pots you usually see with single coil pickups and the rhythm circuit has 1M pots, the tone caps are also different but that's the basic gist of what's going on. This is a great example to point out when someone asks how the pot values effect tone.
The rhythm circuit is usually a 1MOhm vol pot paired with a 50KOhm tone pot, giving a darker overall sound. The normal circuit is 1MOhm vol and tone pots. Some players do swap in 250K or 500K pots, though, to smooth out treble frequencies. The rhythm circuit tone cap filters out a bit more high end when the tone pot is turned down than the normal circuit tone cap does.
Yea buddy - you finally found one! I don't know how many of these I've played - in real and reissues as well as Squier copies. My asshole brother had one of these but someone desoldered the rhythm pickup circuit. Not only that but they repainted it in green then blue. He took it all apart and never once did it ever get played again. He sold it to another guy that had his own place to sell stuff and restored it. I never saw it again. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us to enjoy!
Your playing on this one sounded awesome! I Ioved the quasi-psychedelic/Indian raga vibe at the beginning. You ought to venture further down that road! Super cool guitar!
A lot of older guys still play these through smaller amps in bars. They usually cut through the mix pretty good. Maybe see what's happening with the pickups. Always a pleasure to see your guitars and abilities.✌️
Sick, I painstakingly have my first of 2 vintage jazzmaster projects operational. Got to gig with it the night after it went together, I'm in love with it.
Great acquisition. I managed to score an AVRI 63 Jazzmaster about ten years ago. For a time, it was all I played. Now I feel like going directly to the man cave and plugging it in, but the wife's asleep.
I am guessing you are connecting with this example despite your ascertation that Strats are your jam? This is a gorgeous guitar. I think over a Strat or "S" type (read Strat copy) a JazzMaster is next on my bucket list.
Yea the original bridge in a bag in the case with something playable on it is definitely the right way to keep them fully stock lol. If ya don’t string at least 12s on the guitar it can’t hold them in place.
I love that the cigarette burn on the headset is considered a "feature" when like 50 years ago someone was probably like "Shit, ruined my guitar." That is awesome though, what an absolute gem of a guitar and the tone you got out of it and your playing was naaaaaaaasty. Keep it up.
Gorgeous guitar and a great example of my fav Fender model. I do think you could lose the buzzstop and maybe shim the neck to keep the sound more pure to the original.
Great playing and interesting tones, but the switches need some contact cleaner 😋 It would also be nice to hear the pristine clean tones of this guitar.
I still dont understand why he uses a badass vintage guitar, when tone woods and materials dont matter, lol. One of the greatest guitar channels out here! Appreciate!
Was that c standard then down to a dropped Bb? After you dropped it, it was putting off some very live Jimmy Page vibes. Very intriguing playing. Super unique sound. You find the best scores and really make them shine. Thanks for sharing it!
Also curious what he did there as this was likely 4-5 steps down, and 2 up on the 5th, resulting in something like BBDGBE. Sounds huge, have to try that!
@@monsithomassi9269 IDK. He's still using standard chord fingering when he plays high on the neck but it is definitely lower in pitch. And it would make sense to tune way down especially on such an old guitar, one equipped with a tremolo to boot, without doing some thorough inspection first. He often puts out shorts and the like playing these guitars as soon as he gets them, only changing the strings, and you wouldn't want to risk damaging something like that going full standard. Tremolo springs definitely lose their strength over time as well. That's the logic I applied to my guess. It's what I would do for that gotta have it hit of playing before I spend some hours making sure everything was just so. And as I mentioned it called to my mind some of Jimmy Page live vibes. He was fond of open tunings, almost all of which are lower in the register. Things like white summer or bron yr aur, they are coming from a c on the bass. Lots of his acoustic album stuff was like this and then he played it live on electrics. Sounds very reminiscent to me. Maybe we will get a response. Keep your eyes peeled for a notification!
I was only going to post a video on a JAZZMASTER'S that i think has been re worked by FENDER played by Neil Levang I feel this had a maple neck then a rosewood board was added later .Fender where getting a lot of complaints from stores and players for the discoloring of the maple boards, that is why they went to rosewood... THE SLAB BOARDS warped and where returned under warranty Fender then used a radius-ed veneer to solve the problem. ruclips.net/video/mmQZ35rFwj4/видео.html Neil Levang @50sec in you can see a rosewood board with a walnut plug at the nut!! on his Jazz master.
You're great at what you do, and you obviously know your stuff, but, to a normal Joe Public like me, I would be wary of the trade mark cigarette burn, being a fake relic. Love your playing. All the best.
You gotta get rid of that buzz stop and put a mastery in the bridge. The buzz stop fixes the problem of unwanted noise but takes away the magic of the jazzmaster at the same time. If you just give it a good setup you wont need the buzzstop.
Jazzmaster!! The favorite guitar of one of my favorite players, Michael Lemmo! He swears by these babies, and the tone tells you why! Great pickup, Matthew!! Play on!!
I think the "lead" circuit is a bit of eq and tone shaping, like having a rudimentary effects onboard. Leo also made an OMG circuit in the G&L days that also mystifies a lot of people but when people use it, it sounds distinctive but still nicely fits in where it was.

Can’t wait to see the authentication video on this one. You may not think Jazzmasters are for you, but you still made some beautiful sounds out of this stunning guitar, I really don’t think there’s a guitar out there that you can’t showcase to its very best. 2:27 Actually Matt the first in '58 and early 59 like the Strats and Teles were maple necks. Here is the third Jazzmaster off the production line in '58 with a mapleneck owned by Freddie Tavarez and sold to Norm in '89 for sale for $100k USD is still up on reverb as a past sold.
Jazzmasters are a joke compared to Strat. Inferior in all respects. Looks ... fugly vs Sexy and Stratospheric, functionality the Strat trem is miles better than the JMs. PIckups and tones are better on a Strat also. Why bother unless you get a vintage one cheap? Only an idiot would make such a fugly bad design in the 21st century.
I was got an 66’ jazzmaster, Nice neck with the block but one mic was unmagnestised (i don’t now the world in english) but for sure it was a piece of pure rock !!!
I literally have NEVER wanted a Jazzmaster or Jag until very recently. I always thought they were too weird. Anyway I picked myself up a Custom Shop 59 Jazzmaster and it's so freakin good, I can't believe I never wanted one of these before. Mine has 250K pots and it sounds sort of like a fat Strat in the bridge. But the neck pickup is out of this world. I'm not usually a neck pickup guy (unless on a Strat) but the Jazzmaster has changed my tune. I even like both pickups on, and I generally hate that sound. Such a great guitar. One day I'll be able to afford a vintage one. Maybe.
Unsolicited advice, I recommend taking the buzz stop off, it doesn't need it and wrecks the tone... watching how you play, you won't need that break angle. I also like the original saddles. I have experience with pre-cbs jag and JM and the mastery and buzz stops add and take away from the guitar. If you thrash at it, yes you need it, if you play more delicately, its better and the resonance is better. Also, 11's are great on some examples if they seem thin with 10's or 9's. each one is different and requires a bit of TLC to find the right setup. each one is unique, for sure!
Jazzmaster and Jaguars are my favorite Fenders. That buzz stop roller must have been added by a previous owner as it would not have been on the guitar from the factory. The bridge appears to be sitting almost flat against the pickguard. If you raise the bridge to the proper height, and shim the neck then you don't need the buzz stop.

That guitar makes my mouth water Matthew. It has a sitar sound quality and I heard some J. Paige sounds from Houses of the Holy. Great find

Ive got a couple Jazzys, also a Jaguar as well. The 57 Stratocaster is still my # number 1 next to my 60 Tele..
Throw that buzzstop away! What an awesome guitar.
In my humble opinion, this guitar is right up there with your Strat and your Les Paul......oh, and didn't you get an old Melody Maker recently too??
I know you focus primarily on Fender guitars, but I'd love to see you check out a vintage Rickenbacker next
Matt, this guitar has that sound you need for when you're jamming with your band and you can't get a sound. Keep it.
