i love this scene so much because it's so heartbreaking. like just the way luke says "you can go back to being lorelai gilmore and i'll go back to being the guy at the diner that pours your coffee" i mean POETIC CINEMA. TRAGIC BEAUTY.
Because she knew what he was saying wasn't right and that hurt her more. Luke didn't want to admit his mistake at all in that moment, later on he did and apologized to her and so did she for sleeping with Chris
I get so much more about the depth of the writing every time I watch this amazing show. Luke was afraid to commit to marriage because he was afraid of somehow losing April. We can see by the times we’ve heard him talk about his own father, how much being a father himself meant to him. But when Lorelai gave him the ultimatum and he didn’t go after her, she was right to break up. Of course, she didn’t really want Christopher, but on that awful night, feeling rejected by the love of her life, she needed to feel loved & wanted even if she hadn’t planned on sleeping with Christopher. Luke obviously realizes in these scenes, that he totally blew it by not dealing with his concerns about April and marrying Lorelai so he has to tell himself and her that no one is to blame, they just didn’t belong together. That’s incorrect, of course, but It’s the only way he can go forward. The guilt would be too much otherwise. Here Lorelai grieves what she believes is truth: that Luke didn’t really love her like he thought, that he was “all in” before he was actually together with her, but wouldn’t go to the ends of the earth for her afterwards. Thank goodness we got the 2016 Year in the Life to see Luke’s deepest heart for Lorelai in the kitchen scene after Lorelai comes back from the wild. This whole show is great TV
you're right but i think Luke really love her like he thought and he was really all in and he would go to the end of the earth for her afterwards i mean just see how much he had been there for her and how much he cared for her, like visiting and helping Lorelai when her father was in the hospital, both in season 1 and season 7 when they were broke up and she was married. how much he had help her through the entire season, how miserable he was when they were broke up. how much he would do anything even if he didnt want to or didnt like, just for Lorelai. i really believe he really felt all those thing but that April thing is messed up him enough that he acted wrong and treated her very badly. he was just afraid and blindsided. thank god he realize in the end of season 7, i mean just look at the way he would do everything to make that party happen and stayed up all night just to see Lorelai happy. that's why i believe he really love her and felt all of those things
They are both hurting so much! Its so sad, once the angry faded the pain set in and this is the scene I think it really shows.I honestly think Luke believes this though, she was raised for someone like Christopher and he feels he cant compete
These scene hurts…. The way he looks at her and the way she looks at him…. For a second I thought they were gonna realize they do belong to each other but the didn’t and this was really heartbreaking 💔🥺🥺🥺
Another sad scene between these two. Lor was vulnerable here. Luke could have told her what he really feels but to guard himself he pushes her away and hurts her feelings more.
But he did do that at the end of the last episode. He'd already made his grand effort to try and win her back. Not only did she not accept it, but she stabbed him through his metaphorical heart by telling him she'd gone and slept with somebody else (someone she knew would make him angry). Frankly, it was rather vicious of her to do that. There was nothing else for Luke to try and do by this point. He has to begin to move on. He'd made his effort; it was her turn to try and win him back if that's what she wanted.
so maybe I'm crazy- I don't know if anyone has mentioned it before, but at .42 seconds, in that moment- I believe Lorelai was hoping for a reconciliation. The lack of dialogue after their interaction mixed with her body language in how she approached him and her admitting that she was the "jerk"- all points to her wishing for a reunion. Of course the infraction is way too great and Luke shoots it down by saying they weren't right for each other. But, I see in some of the comments that people think her crying afterwards is indicative of her realization of him not truly loving her or that their relationship was disingenuous. But I couldn't further disagree. I think it's her coming to terms with not only their separation but her own role in the demise of their relationship with the knowledge that she made a permanent decision in a temporary moment.
“I know I was a jerk. I was just mad” “I was the jerk. I was such a jerk” *Lorelai starts walking toward Luke* I think this is the last REAL conversation that these two have until after her marriage with Chris ends. After this they’re cordial, but mostly don’t interact with one another outside of emergencies (like her dad being in the hospital or the custody battle for April). And I honestly get the feeling that Lorelai wanted to reconcile here. Could they have been a couple again? Maybe not. But at least talk things out and work to actually be friends instead of just cutting one another off completely. Like the way they speak here is classic banter almost, not being overly polite or formal. And she seems receptive to him. But when he goes toward saying that they just don’t work at all she immediately shuts down, exits the area, and then goes home to cry. It all comes off as a moment where she wanted Luke to be more open, whether it’s angry or just emotional in general. She didn’t want to hear that it was over, or that she belonged with someone else. And compare this to their fight over Jess back when he and Rory got into the car accident. After that she talks to Luke at the diner and also says that if he’s mad at her she wants him to just be mad and express it rather than being polite and closed off. Not saying that Luke can’t react how he wants in either scenario of course. Just using it to further argue that the response she got from Luke here isn’t what she wanted. And I think her crying at home afterward is because she realizes it’s over because (from her point of view) Luke has decided/accepted that it’s over. So, whatever guilt or sadness she had over the situation is magnified because she has to live with the fact that she played her own part in making him feel that way.
Him saying they are not right together was such a cop out. not wanting to take responsibility for what he did. But why she didnt correct his BS after that. he was deflecting so much.
I like how Luke gave it to her and told her she should be with Chris how many times Luke saw her with him kissing and holding hands still she didn't tell Rory the truth about her Chris because Rory will support Luke
And you realize that the only person she’s really been in love with has always been Luke bc every time they would fight were the only moments we get to see her really really devastated…
This was so sad when Luke said you can go back to being lorelia Gilmore and I can go back to being the guy who pours your coffee. And the music was sad.
"Luke" reconoce como se sentía,"lorelai" en un momento pareció que pensó que aún se podría solucionar las cosas,al aceptar la tontería que hizo, pero con lo que dijo él a continuación, sepultó todo,y obviamente le dolió sentir que lo que tuvieron, para él,fue un error y no debió pasar nunca, por eso su pena y lágrimas al final.
She suffered so much waiting for him to get it right...kept quiet when she should have talked...he on the other hand messed up big time... just both immature...and now it is what it is. I don't blame Lorelai for marrying Chris. She had to give it a chance after all these years.
It's incredibly magnanimous in this scene for Luke to essentially tell her that he was willing to be friends again after things die down. To try and relieve her of her guilt by saying no one is to blame. Sleeping with Christopher was the most horrible thing she could do in a breakup with Luke and he is willing to let it go, eventually, for their friendship. Yes, obviously, he's denying the truth of his huge heartbreak here and he hasn't fully faced his part in why Lorelai was so unhappy in their relationship yet - but for him to be willing to ease her suffering in this moment by letting go of blaming her shows how much the depth of his love for her goes. I never understood what she expected from him with this conversation in this moment. It seems like she wants him to keep trying to fix their relationship or apologize for ever making her feel bad, but, I mean, how can she expect to keep taking comfort from him now when she deliberately did the one thing that would hurt him the most and never explained why. She keeps saying he didn't fight for her, but, he did fight for her. He was slow and imperfect but she ran at him like a mad woman and then ran off before they could talk. I assume he was trying to give her space to calm down. Then he came over the next day and tried again to talk but she wouldn't let him because she was already wracked with guilt. Lorelai is just the walking embodiment of raw emotion most of the time. It would be impossible for any partner to fully keep up. I'm sure that's one of the qualities that made Luke love her, but this is the downside to it.
I hated Rory the most in this episode. The moment she found out why Lorelai broke up with Luke she shamed her, yelled at her and kicked her while she was down. I could care less about her other flaws but, when she attacks the only person who has her back, that's when she's truly a bitch.

You summed it up perfetly! Luke was just so scared about gaining a daugther and a stepdaugther and a wife all in the space of a few months.
Never seen somoene say it so accurately well done

You cant blame Luke for thinking Lor belong with Christopher, she keeps going back to that guy..

So much was said at the end between Lorelai and Rory and not a word was spoken 😥🥰🤗😊

I loved how she said "Okay .....my hands getting cold "
She was fighting back those tears and she needed to leave there and she said that and i love it too
