My favorite part of all of these restored videos is seeing how much effort everyone put into the clothes they wore in public, no matter how rich or poor.
And the thing is: It's not actually more effort. It's a pair of trousers, a shirt, potentially a waistcoat, a jacket and a hat. That's a perfectly reasonable amount of clothing that most people will still wear today, it's just that the items themselves have changed. And people had fewer clothes, so even less energy went into deciding what to wear. I think we should go back to that: have just a couple of high-quality clothing items that we take care of, that we mend and that we wear until they don't look presentable anymore or we've outgrown them
It truly is. 100 years goes by like nothing. I look at 100 years like one life time. It all goes so fast. Add 9 more lifetimes to one, and it’s 1000 years. Do that again, and you’re at the time of Christ. This life is but a vapor in the wind. I yearn for a past I was never apart of when I see these videos. Tribulation is in every generation, no doubt, but man I still wish I could be alive during a time where debauchery wasn’t the whole nation’s way of life. Such class, morals, and decency during this era. There is a certain quietness, almost like a calm before the storm. Every generation has seen it all, for the most part nothing is new under the sun, but this generation is unique to all before it, from technology alone. Little did that boy know that a little thing called youtube would be invented 100+ years in the future, and he would be in a video with millions watching him
I'm not sure it will be the same, though. The reason these videos are so emotional to us (even though its about people we don't know and a time we've never lived) is because the footage is so rare. It was also a simpler time, though "simple" doesn't necessarily mean "easy," and we wonder how they managed to get by... or if they were really happy. Today, we document our lives 24/7... @@kristinabliss No, they did not.* Most of those tenement kids didn't even have shoes or hats. It's probably a Sunday or other Sabbath Day. Kids that age had "play clothes" unless they were rich or had a tailor for a parent. In fact it's almost certain that it's the cameraman's kid. Since only an upper class or rich man could afford a movie camera and the chemicals.
PS. If you watch the middle left of the screen in the first 3 seconds you can see how kids REALLY dressed. And even that's a lil fancy schmancy. That plus so many men standing around on a nice day means it's a Sunday.

100 years later, people will look at us just like we are looking at this
And be horrified
I'm not sure it will be the same, though.
The reason these videos are so emotional to us (even though its about people we don't know and a time we've never lived) is because the footage is so rare. It was also a simpler time, though "simple" doesn't necessarily mean "easy," and we wonder how they managed to get by... or if they were really happy.
