The entire album is about an entire day. It is the kind of music you can listen either high or sober and it blows your mind away.
Amazing that it was written and recorded in 1967. Way ahead of its time.
And make sure to let it play out , it's not over when the music stops
Check out the song Forever Autumn sung by the same singer, Justin Hayward. Another beautiful song.
First released in 1968 this is a CLASSIC! 57 YEARS AGO!
I wish I could experience hearing this the first time again.
You need to listen to the entire album, Days of futures past. Then and only then you will capture the full experience of this beautiful song. It’s is one of the best musical experiences you will ever have.
Passed
Always loved them. And I have for the last 60 years. I do remember TV ads with music snippets, just enough to get you to buy it so you could hear the whole song.
There is another video when they played Royal Albert Hall in 2000 that has a one and half minute long orchestra ending that almost made Justin Hayward cry. It's worth checking out. And there is a Moody Blues channel where you can see a 21 year old Justin singing this in 1967
The 60s and 70s, the greatest era of music
yes !
I was not really aware of the Moody Blues until university. Someone on the same residence floor played Moody Blues every night while I went to sleep. It was magnificent
The Moody Blues are a top favorite since first hearing them in the late 60's. They have been my wife's favorite band for all those years.
One of my favorite songs of all time. This is how it needs to be experienced, with a full orchestra! Song was written by a teenager and being sung 50 years later by a mature version and it’s just as beautiful.
I was born in 1950 and bought the album Days of Future Passed as soon as I heard it in a Walgreens department store when it first came out. I play one of their many albums at least once a day. Greatest band/singers/writers ever.
Your smile while watching shows exactly how much you appreciated this performance. 😍
Glad I grew up then.
I was in college in the late 80's early nineties and the Moody Blues was constantly listened to. Their Live at Red Rocks was life changing it was so good.
I got to see them in San Diego in 1971 when I was in the navy. Center stage, 9 rows back. Remember it like it was yesterday. Everybody knew Justin Hayward had a great voice but Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder were just as good. All 3 were incredible. One of the best concerts I've seen.
Great reaction Red! This song is one of THE most perfect & beautiful love songs ever! I may be biased as it was my wedding song - my wife and I LOVE this piece!
I highly recommend checking the whole Days Of Future Passed album - it's basically a 'day in the life' concept - each song represents a different part of the day (this being the night!)
Considered one of the first concept albums, also one of the first to incorporate symphonic music and rock together. It's as psychedelic as they come - and a thing of beauty!
This live recording was in Toronto, and I'm so glad to say, my family & I were at this show! (parents, kids, sister & her husband) - to hear the entire album WITH a symphony orchestra was TRULY magical! It was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album (1967-2017).
Justin Hayward's voice is spectacular.
Cheers from Canada, eh!
This is one of those songs that was just in the air when I was growing up (60s and 70s UK). Gorgeous, and so impressive that they can still sing like that!
TIME/LIFE was a great way of getting the songs you wanted. Speaking of great songs, you just heard one of the greatest of all time.
The song Forever Autumn is another of Justin Hayward's great vocal performances. It's from the "opera" The War Of The Worlds and is a real tearjerker.
I was in 10th-11th grade in a small Alaskan village when this album came out. DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. I got an A in class for quoting the closing of that album. This entire album is a complete masterpiece. Sit back with a glass of your favorite wine and listen to this entire production from Day break to Nights in White Satin.
I promise you’ll be moved by to shear brilliance of this work of art
Many more Moodys songs that you will love
The Moodies are as good as music gets. IMHO.
I studied those commercials intently so that I could beat my brother at 'name that tune'.
You'll want to check out the song, Tuesday Afternoon. It's also on the Days Of Future Passed album from 1968. You'll like the whole album. It's like a story of a day, from early morning till late night. It was recorded with instrumental segments in between the songs. Nights In White Satin is the last song on the album.
The first time I heard this song was a concert they played at Red Rocks. That whole concert was amazing, but was slightly marred by PBS breaking in every so often for their pledge drive mess. Even so, if you have a chance, find a video of that concert and give it a listen...well worth the effort!
The full album version "days of future past" arguable the first full prog concept album starts with the full orchestra and ends with the full orchestra the song "nights in white satin" was inspired by one of Justins x girlfriends who had given him a gift of white satin bedsheets it is then followed by the spoken poem "late lament" written and spoken by the band's drummer.
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one;
Lonely man cries for love and has none;
New mother picks up and suckles her son;
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey is yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion
Yes I bought two or three of those time life sets in my time. And yes the "Hits of the 70's was one of them. 😁
Wish you had the earlier, extended version video with a bigger orchestra and the original band member doing the flute solo, and a much longer orchestral finish. This one was like listening to a symphony in mono. Try finding that one to listen to, it will bring you to tears.
One of my all-time favorites. There was a local radio station that would often play this later at night, and I would stay up hoping for a chance to hear it again. Pretty powerful song written by a 19 year old. My brother once had the chance to play in the Moody's backing orchestra, great experience.
BTW, Larkin Poe once covered this for their cover series. Justin Haywood was so moved that he posted it to his own socials, giving a glowing report. That led to a conversation between the Lovells and Justin. Both the cover and the conversation are on their RUclips channel. Justin gives some of the back story about the song and the recording of it.
The studio version of the song is rather longer. You may want to hear that one, too.
Many years back, my local classic rock station, K-She, released a parody of this song, 'Night at White Castle', about the semi-local burger chain. It's on RUclips.
They also have many early 60's hits also......and a few in the 80's also
This was a special song between myself and a special lady in the 1970s. Those days are gone, but the song remains. You need to listen to the entire album, Days of Future Past. Glad you enjoyed it.
I saw the Moody Blues do the entire Days of Future Past album live at Red Rocks outside of Denver, Colorado, and it was amazing! The Colorado Symphony Orchestra accompanied them, and they sounded fresh and solid. My bottom line, however,` is that the original recording in the studio will never be bested. And keep in mind, it was done before all these technical advances, so it was raw and absolutely PERFECT! If you want to experience the full song in all its glory, you MUST listen to the album version. It also includes Days Lament, which is a vital part of the album. ;-)
Hey neighbor, I first heard this song as a little boy in the early 1970’s. It has been my favorite song ever since then. This video that you watched did not include the orchestral ending of the song. You should check out the version from Royal Albert Hall. That version is really amazing. I remember those compilation albums back in the day. I bought quite a few of them.
Welcome to my generation of great music! Moody Blues have always been one of my favorite bands. This is one of my favorites! Love your reaction.
Thank you!
Its too bad they no longer do the poem at the end. It added so much to the song.
Graham Edge wrote the poetry spoken on a few albums. Rest in peace Graham.
Be careful if you listen to this with a broken heart!...
Thanks for the reaction.
This song along with the song "Questions" are in my top all time list of songs
I remember the ads. Lovely song.
I'm 54, and yes, I know what you are talking about. Great reaction. 🫶
I have listened to the Mody Blues ever since they came out in the late 60's , they are still one of my all time favorites bands , their music is exquisite and very cutting edge for this times , another excellent choice from my favorite Redheaded neighbor ❤ awesome, thank you
This and 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' by Procol Harum were both released in 1967. Not bad for being nearly 60 years old.
I've never seen this performance before, they are quite a bit older here but still sounded great. They didn't have Ray Thomas playing the flute, he died in 2018.
Loved that it has been eons since I have heard that💯💯 Red each reaction is better because of the intensity of how you listen to a song you add so much to it ❤❤❤#redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulfuncountrygirl #heartofgoldwithmetalinhersoul #41K
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 one of favorite favorite songs 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome song!!
Love this song great reaction thank you. 🤟
I saw them in concert in Audubon Park in New Orleans in 1987.
Yes, I remember the Time-Life ads! Justin Hayward had such an awesome voice! You need to check out the original (The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin [Original Footage] (1967)) I love this song so very much! Love your reaction!
The wife and I watched several time-life infomercials and purchased a set from the sixties.
❤❤❤
With this version, I miss seeing and hearing Ray Thomas and his beautiful flute playing. And where is that mind blowing orchestral ending?
There is a extended version with a poem at end highly recommend it
He still sings beautifully. Another great performance by Justin is Forever Autumn, from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
Haha, I remember those music adverts, different company here, but we used to have the same sort of thing. Great song this. Never seen a live version of it though and it was brilliant!! 😊 Oh and talking of voices melting into the instruments has reminded me of a song I was going to tell you about - that I have ironically actually forgotten now 😂but I know which band it was so I'll find it again. 😂
This is the first time I've heard this rendition of the song, which is nice, but truthfully, if you really want to hear a more definitive version where the orchestra plays the ending much better, find the version from their live performance at the "Royal Albert Hall"
Great Song!
Is this from a 2017 performance on their 50th anniversary of Days of Future Passed Tour? They were a great live performance band as well as a great studio band….yes, it was! The screen was for the live performance of the album with an orchestra that was not on site, but on screen! That was a wonderful concert in Portland, Oregon that day.
Love the hair. I'll take a double cheeseburger, fries and a frosty.
Great song, I believe it was released twice. Once in the late 60s and again in the early 70s. I'm 64. I think the first time I heard it was in 1972.
I really enjoy your takes. You look like you're having so much fun. FYI there is a country group of three sisters called the Castellows. They are absolutely great. They did a cover of hurricane, but a lot of their stuff is very good.
I vaguely remember the Time-Life
commercials. Think it took about
4 weeks to get an order?
That was really nice!
Thank you for sharing your
reaction. 😂
I have a lot of the Time-Life series you mentioned!
I got to see them live in 86 or 87 in Las Vegas and was a great show. While in the Air Force i spent a lot of nights in my room and playing the whole album.
Thanks for this. Like you, I only knew parts.
Now I need to learn those chords
One of the best bands ever! So many good songs, but I’d suggest “The Voice”.
I really wish channels who react to this song would use the studio version instead of this particular live performance. The live performance here leaves out what is considered by many to be THE signature part of the song at the end. Why they don’t include that in this version is beyond me.
Been forever since I heard that one. Beautiful song but kinda sad at the same time 😢 unrequited love… good guy finishes last etc.
Great classic!
I always watch your Rush reactions, but this one was top notch...
Saw them once live 3rd row.... Blew me away!
As a husband to two red head wives I saw your eyes change color. Weather that good or bad 🥰
Wow, I saw them when they weren't geezers! 1978, 1981, 1983.
I've seen the Moodies twice; both outdoor evening shows. One was at The Auduban Zoo in NOLA. In between songs, you could hear the calls and shrieks of wild birds, the growls of the big cats and the trumpets of the elephants. It was a full moon and the clouds were silver lined while poetry & song filled the air. It didn't suck at all
From 1967 to 1972 they were as great as anybody, one amazing song and album after another from early prog masters.! Do Legend of a Mind next for more greatness. Enjoy!
🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎻🎶🔥
Formed 1964. One of Birmingham's best products.
Those braids look so good on you
do consider that this is a half century ( I think) from when they first put it down. Question from Question Of Balance is next. So many more...
what could touch me deeper?? venus in scorpio conj neptune in scorpio/ moon in pisces, virgo stellium..it never dies...
I definitely remember those commercials.
It's amazing how, at their older age, they can still hit those notes. Maybe it's maintaining the vocal chords. I know I can't do it, and I'm a little younger than they are. This song really got me into their music back in the mid to late 70s.
First time I have seen this one. Ray Thomas wasn't on the flute.
That's music to get lost in; very calming and relaxing, but really holds your attention. For a bit more up-tempo, check out "I'm Just A Singer" and "Ride My See-Saw".
I'm "10 cassettes for $0.01 from Columbia House" old.
And Moody Blues is one of my favorite bands. The entire Days of Future Passed is fantastic (a concept album that goes from morning to evening - check out the track list and it makes more sense).
Can't wait for my Peter Gabriel Darkness request
Just one simple thing to say, now, you know 😮.
You're hearing a version with a mature, admittedly a bit aged voice from Justin Hayward, not exactly in his prime but still impressive. BTW he wrote the song and scored the production at age 18 as a love song to his girlfriend (future wife)
Dig into this band’s catalog neighbor I think you will enjoy them.
Your in for a treat. Nuff sad
I got records, cassettes and C.D.s from your supplier.
I wished that you would have picked the other video where the orchestra played at the end
Great performance, but you should look at one from a few years earlier. "Moody Blues -- Nights In White Satin [[ Official Live Video ]] HD".
Justin been singing his song for 50+ years and his voice is only slightly changed ....they had a gorgeous sound but they miss Ray's harmonies I think ....Still great to see them and hear them !
Wrong video. They're older here. It shows. Try another, or the official video from 1968. The clarity & beauty is even more astounding!
This is great but an even more impressive live recording available on RUclips is the earlier one from the Albert Hall in London. The orchestra is perhaps even bigger and the original track's dramatic orchestral coda is performed - that is sadly is omitted here.
If you ever get the chance to listen to the entire Day of Future Passed (CD ... or as I did on 8-Track Tape) from beginning to end, it is a life experience.
I know exactly what you are reffering to in the snippets..this song is all about true love beyond any lifetime..
Don't know who the flutist is in this rendition. She's good, but still not Ray Thomas. Still, what an honor to play that solo.
There’s a better live version of this where the strings go off in the ending of the song. But the studio version has the poetry to finish which is the cool part of the song..
Not the best version. Ray Thomas, the original flautist had passed, no poem and no great orchestral finish as in most concerts. As Paul Guercio says below, listen to the entire album.
I remember those commercials. Especially, the Time Life Golden Age of Country with Mickey Gilly and Lorianne Crook. I think I watched that thing a thousand times and can sing each clip that followed the next one. LOL. I don't want to sound crazy but I miss them actually.
I remember this song on the radio as a kid in the early 70's. it was released in 1967, but the version I remember on the radio was a re-release from August of 1972.
There is another version that most people react to that they did at the Royal Albert Hall in England when they were a little younger. I like that version more than this one. If you want to hear it here it is. "Moody Blues -- Nights In White Satin [[ Official Live Video ]] HD" ruclips.net/video/89ZQnWvWcAE/видео.htmlsi=xvfdiJ-hLqQgJTeq
Try forever autumn from war of the worlds
In my "neck of the woods," this masterpiece was seriously over played on the radio. It seemed like it was on twice an hour 24/7 for years in the '70's & early '80's.
This version is very good, but, unfortunately it missed the orchestral ending and a spoken poem that will be worth your time to find. Sorry, I don't know of a good link.
You selected a different version to react to than many, this one was about one fifth shorter and didn't include the orchestral outro. You might dig around and find that version, or you might listen to the full album studio release version that includes both the orchestral outro and a poetic reading (P.S. do not select the radio play version of the studio recording, it was shortened to about three minutes to fit the AM radio format and include neither the poetic reading or the orchestral outro).
Check out "Go Now "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
