To me, the song is a metaphore. To be "crazy on a ship of fools" is like saying "the blind leading the blind". He is aware of the insanity around him and also aknowleding he is a part of it.

Greetings from Canada. 'Now and Zen' was his 4th album (1988) after going solo; 1st was Pictures at Eleven' (1982), 2nd was 'The Principle of Moments' (1983), the 3rd 'Shaken 'n' Stirred' (1985). Peace, love and bellbottoms.

Robert Plant really proved himself, in his post-LZ work, as a vocalist and not just a “rock screamer” as some critics had been wont to dismiss his LZ work.
His Grammy-winning duet album with Alison Krauss, produced by TBone Burnett, is a revelation from the both of the vocalists.
In interviews he talked about having to learn to sing in a more straightforward manner, without the embellishments he was used to employing-ie, there’s not much scooping used in the style of music they were singing. Scooping is all over rock’s blues-based vocals.
His interview where he described first talking to Alison on the phone is a hoot-he said that because she was talking so low, he thought she’d gotten hold of some long-lost Quaaludes lol-the straight as a plumb line Alison Krauss! He said that he’d heard that tone before from his former wife Maureen when she’d had a few ‘ludes.
Alison was simply trying not to awaken her baby, and she’s soft-spoken anyway.
PS-if she ever did get hold of some, I’d be her new best friend lol, it’s a stinking shame that they were banned. I haven’t indulged in chemical recreation in decades, but I’d take one more shot at glory for those!

This song is so crisp and clear sounding. Robert’s voice is incredible as usual yet intended to be softer for this track. The instruments are purely genius and are perfect. The guitar has a harp guitar sound to it that I find the sound very striking and beautiful. Liked your reactions to it and agree everyone likes to hear Robert belt out a wailing verse, but this song is great as is.

My wife and I attended a Robert Plant concert in the Hard Rock casino in Biloxi Mississippi where he toured supporting his 2005 Mighty Rearranger album. It was a small venue and as I was standing still in the aisle while people were bouncing all around he looked right at me and we had a very brief connection, that Yes! This Is COOL! I saw Led Zeppelin in 1979 in a much larger arena, but this was special!

If I may; here in the States, we have a saying 'we're all in the same boat', meaning we're all facing the same challenges. Then there's 'a girl in every port', alluding to the wayward sailor who never stays put with one woman. Now, Robert sings 'turn this boat around, back to my loving ground'. I get from that that he's done with the running, or sailing, around with the rest of the fools, and wants to get back to the solid ground of a real relationship.

this one, and several other plant songs from this era, were done in a slow-jazz style. slow jazz was becoming popular at that time. there were even radio stations that played it as their whole format in the late 80's/ early 90's.

I’m putting this here because I hope you read it . Even though it’s about a different reaction .
‘I’m not a metal head or a prog fan , and so avoided tool , and reactions to it , but boy for the last two weeks I have been opened up and am speechless. Metaphorically.
In one reaction you said you had to be Shakespeare to describe Tools music . That set me to thinking that Tool is akin to Shakespeare , we can all write and we use the same words that Shakespeare uses but cannot approach his genius .
All my life I have listened to, moved to and been moved by music . Great artists all sharing the 7 notes to express themselves . But they do not approach what I’m discovering with tool . Their music surrounds me , holds me , yet I’m flying floating swimming drowning dying and being born all at the same time . And everywhere I move there is a lyric, note , or beat that matches my feelings , thoughts and movements . ‘
So a big thanks to you both , and all the reactors who have shared their immediate responses to new music . ❤❤❤

Some of Robert's solo work could easily be Zeppelin i.e tracks like 'Slow Dancer' and 'Calling to You'. But he's always explored different styles as if he'd 'been there & done the stadium rock thing' and was keen to explore new ground. A true original solo artist who has surrounded himself with so many different musicians from all over the world. There'll never be another performer like him. And still a nice humble guy.

ANdrei, Dominika all othere reviewer couples could learn a lot from watching you. You always appear to be deep into the music and your facial expressions, especially the eyes tell me you give the tunes/songs your undivided attention and feelings whether good or bad. The body sways, smiles, ! With this song I was with you in that it is underwhelming and never fullfills its potential. Thank You !

You have to separate out your expectations of his voice in Zeppelin from his solo career. He didn’t wish to be always expected to do his “oh, baby baby’s” when he went solo. He reinvented himself. He has a beautiful voice, and it shines in this song. He DID reclaim his rock persona to a degree with his album Manic Nirvana in 1990 and Fate of Nations on 1993, bringing back Zeppelin songs into his live sets…..culminating with his reuniting with Jimmy Page in 1994 to rework Zeppelin songs for their Unledded project.
But in the early to mid 80’s, Plant deliberately went about distancing g himself from the Rock God persona of Zeppelin. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful examples of that period in his career. Big Log is another

So what you may not know is that Roberts voice through the years changed quite a bit, he lost his range and his ability to do those early Zeppelin screaming wails. Around 1973 is when it became noticeable that his range was diminished, and his voice was quite rough. He had vocal chord surgery around that time as well. So all those years later, after Zep, he still had that wonderful characteristic Robert Plant voice as far as his tone but his solo work you’re not going to hear Whole Lotta love screams that make your hair stand on end! Plus, he matured with his music, he would still rock out occasionally, but he was attempting to move forward and distance himself a bit Zeppelin.
