Wow, so glad you made this easy-to-understand and follow video. I have just gotten a w123 and this is helping me to understand how it works. Problem starting mine, but now I think I can do this!
It’s alive!! Wonderful to hear the 240d kick over! Please continue to try starting the 300d. I have absolute faith that it will start. Change your glow plugs, adjust your valves, and change your oil! A valve adjustment and removal of carbon from your valves can differentiate a running OM616 or OM617 from one that won’t. The euro 300d engine has less emissions and more power! Please do all you can to save it! I have a silver Euro 300d sedan, that I saved from an impound yard. Days away from being crushed, the engine suffered from similar symptoms! Despite all that cranking it would not start! Having replaced my glow plugs, adjusted my valves, the engine came right to life! The repair is so simple, don’t throw in the towel! Since that day my euro 300d sedan has never let me down, and I use it constantly! The car makes power similar to my family’s 300SD Turbodiesel, without the turbo! There is no vehicle I would or will ever trust as much as I do my 300d. I hope you can take the time to get it going!

I don't think that it was a glow plug problem, I got the exact same problem starting my 300D after she sat 10+ years in a barn, however my glow plugs were working.
The problem comes from the fact that the fuel lines coming from the pump and going to the injectors get filled with air as the time passes and air gets in the fuel system.
You just have to tri to turn the engine on for a long time so that the air get's out of the fuel system (changing the fuel filters can also help)
Theres also a primer hand pump next to the pump. The sedan ended up having constant air in the lines. I could see bubbles go from injector to injector
Starter fluid does NOT work in a diesel, that's why it kicks back like that so it actually has the opposite effect. Best way is just to loosen the injector lines and bleed the system of air. Works every time.

@@Tiffany-qf6sj it does, but understand what you’re doing to the engine when you spray ether into it. The knocking and clacking you hear is the engine, being pissed off, and the main bearings taking too much load. Spray diesel into the intake, it works better and won’t kill the engine.
Always manually pump the fuel system several times when starting one of these diesels after not running for some time or you risk wasting your battery.

Put a new fuel filter on and prefill the fuel filter with diesel and it will, in most cases, fire right up. It may not stay running until all the air is out of the fuel line. But, my limited experience with mechanical diesel fuel injection is air in the fuel filter.
These have a little hand pump built in the bleed it. Im going to try to replace the glow plugs and see what happens
