Denis Villeneuve movies are made to confuse you. At every opportunity - in the story, in the cinematography, editing, and music, Villeneuve wants to keep you guessing. Watching Denis Villeneuve movies is to be placed in an environment of uncertainty. And that’s what makes them so interesting.
In films like Enemy, Prisoners, Polytechnique, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, Villeneuve consistently creates awe and wonder with images and sounds we’ve never seen before. In Enemy, Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal) must confront the possibility that he is more than a single person. In Sicario, Kate (Emily Blunt) is pushed into the world of drug cartels by a tight-lipped company man (Josh Brolin) and a near-silent assassin (Benicio Del Toro). In Prisoners, Keller (Hugh Jackman) ventures into murky moral territory to find his kidnapped daughter. In Arrival, Louise (Amy Adams) and Ian (Jeremy Renner) are tasked with bridging the communication gap between beings from another dimension. In all these movies, the characters find themselves in new worlds without answers.
In this video, we’ve cracked the code on Villeneuve’s love of ambiguity and we explain how his directing style works across 7 areas of focus including sound, color, production design, and more. Villeneuve creates movies that can be enigmatic but there’s no denying that he is a film artist in complete control of his medium.
If you’re studying directing, cinematography, editing, or pursuing ANY career in filmmaking, there are a ton of lessons to be learned from Denis Villeneuve. This is the ultimate breakdown of Denis Villeneuve’s directing style.

What I love about Villeneuve's films is that his story doesn't take any moral side. He let his audience decide what's wrong.
🤝🏾
So very very very French, really good at keeping private lives and minding thier own business!
@@pinchebruha405 he’s French Canadian interestingly, I wonder if their culture has the same thing going on
As a french canadian, i assure you it's a Denis Villeneuve specificity😅. People here are the same a-hole as.everywhere.😂
Can’t wait for Villeneuve’s “Dune” and, hopefully, his “Blade Runner” sequel. The man is a master.
Agreed!
He's already made a Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
@@kitsullivan1583 there are rumors of another blade runner by denis
@@enzoduhau5744 really? It will be interesting to see what Villeneuve comes up with.
Im pretty sure. He still focus on one character who lookin for answer .. BecauswThat can make the audiens more focus and deep dive into this character. Can't wait for DUNE. Hoping for not delay release
Jóhann Jóhannsson's 'The Beast' is one of the greatest scores put to film. RIP to the man
Definitely a great composer!
Hate to say it, but I find Hans Zimmer a talentless hack in comparison
@@ShishakliAus That talentless hack helps shape the world of movie scores. Maybe he's too famous for some people's taste.
After watching Dune three times in the theaters, I can now officially say Villeneuve is my fav director. His slow, immersive, emotional scifi directing is second to none.
Same here
About to watch Dune for the 4th time, today
Hoy veo Dune 2 por tercera vez en el cine.
Finally. The guy is the Kubrick and Spielberg amongst his generation. Has aced varied genres.
A great filmmaker for sure
Kubrick and Spielberg do not belong to same category
Actually Denis comes under the Category of Lynch, Kubrick... I can't wait for Dune movie...
@@Callaghan_212 thats his point
@@A4bhishe7k Do not agree with that
Main difference from Nolan and Villeneuve is that Nolan is affraid of uncertainty, and uses exposition to explain everything, out of fear of losing his audience. Villeneuve dooesnt need to rely on that. Everything we need to know is in the frame. Thats why his cnema in the perfect combination between art and mainstream product.
You clearly haven’t watched a single Christopher Nolan film
Couldn’t have said it better
@@andreimcallister1365 watch inception again. Nolan is known for his exposition.
@@andreimcallister1365lolol nolan films r just pretentious 😂….nothing else
It's not that Nolan is "afraid of uncertainty"; he just loves precision. Villeneuve is a minimalist. Nolan creates dense worlds. Both are highly effective, but have very different approaches to film making. If I am to give my own opinion on the 2, I'd say Nolan is more creative while Villeneuve is more polished. Both are in my top 3 directors working today.
Hands down my favorite Director. Sicario is my favorite film of all time. All of his work is absolutely haunting and his work actually affects me and stays imprinted in my mind for months at a time. Truly a genius...
That's a great way to describe his work, Sicario is a fantastic film!
Sicario still living rent free in my mind after 8 years
It kills me that BR2049 didn't blow the box office out of the water. Such a masterpiece.
The movie is great, but the film distributors responsible for it didn't probably do a good job making the right audience aware, and wanting to watch the film prior to its release.....
Don't worry! it made its money back! ,plus more whit Dune! coming! more fan will want to see Blade runner 2049.
You mean to tell me you are surprised the tik tokers didnt want to watch this? Surprised pikachu face
@@bartzhang391 exactly.
I loved br2049 it was good
The greatest director at the moment.
No, I think Christopher Nolan is the best
You are not the only one that thinks that brother! Yeah, Christopher Nolan is great too, but Villeneuve gives me chills through his movies and that's not easy to do!
Absolutely.
@@carlospadinmartinez 😂😂😂 every movie is art, even movies from uwe boll, michael bay, or roland emmerich, so this is no argument, but I think Villeneuve and Nolan are very similar and the fact that both Nolan and Villeneuve will be soon bringing a film to the cinema (Dune and Tenet), which both has a fantastic cast, huge budget and great potential, only underlines this thesis. In my opinion, Nolan's writing and the way he makes films is a little better, but that doesn't mean that I don't really like Villeneuve. Let's just hope that both films will be good, because in the end it doesn't matter which director you find better, because it shouldn't be about this, but only about the quality of their films, whether the music is great, whether the pictures are beautiful whether the film is written intelligently and multifaceted, whether the actors are good and whether the film gives the viewer a good time, because that is what the medium film ultimately is for.
@non so che nome mettere non so che nome mettere every movie, every book, every song and every picture is unfortunately in some kind of way art 😂😪🤷🏽♂️
It's crazy how I didn't know about him untill i saw Blade Runner 2049 and were COMPLETELY mesmerized. Then I saw Arriwal and couldn't stop crying (that ending seriously hit me hard). Two of the absolute best movies I've seen. He's the perfect choice for Dune.
I hope you continu that sequence and go watch : Sicario, Prisoners, Incendies (subtitle) foreign winning oscar in that year. Enjoy Prisoners, I pure masterpiece!
@@oliviermonette9767 I definitely will!
Try also "Polytechnique", but not on a first date ; -)
Incendies is my favorite Villeneuve film. Completely wrecked me by the end.
A haunting film for sure
He can use ambiguity and hidden meaning without being pretentious and i love that
Ya. Innaratu makes some beautiful....truly beautiful films....but there is always a bit of pretentiousness that shines through.
Definitely my favourite director of all time, an absolute genius of cinema.
One of the best working today!
I don't think any of us are prepared for Dune. I'm still reeling from Blade Runner 2049 and that came out two and a half years ago. Master filmmaker!
Very excited for Dune!
Discover Montréal 2049 is the greatest film ever made IMO and I can only imagine the perfection Dune will be.
Try wrapping your head around Enemy! My sister and I spent weeks in academic discussion trying to make sense of it. So friggin good!
@@Anubis22774 Yo I actually think in a similar way it’s one of my favorites. I think it’s second after inception.
I fir one think I'm ready for DUNE
Big respect to the composers who made the movies even more epic. Pure goosebumps
Definitely, the collaboration between the composer and director is so important
Johann Johannason and Denis Villeneuve!
Habs
Hans Zimmer too!
"Best things are always short". Same for this video. A fan of Directors' Series.
Thanks for watching!
Amitav Maity she didn’t see it that way ☹️☹️
I'm a big fan of the DUNE books, I can't wait to see his own vision translated into a movie. Denis Villeneuve is one of the few directors that still makes me want to go to a theater the moment he makes a film. I don't need to know anything about the movie: if he's directing, I'm in.
You know you can expect something special when you watch a Villeneuve film!
It's absolutely breath taking. I just saw dune. It was mind blowing.
Well, have you had the chance to see it yet?
You were right!
"Artistry has no rules", It only has intentionality and discipline. StudioBinder team, You're just awesome. You correspond your practical task with the intended lessons seamlessly. Kudos.
But sometimes defining borders allows for endless opportunity in variation. Like music genres. Like saying: "you can only work with 0 up to 1"; and then realizing there are an infinite amount of decimal numbers between the two.
@@acevfx2923 Your point is Very valid 👌👍
It however yet incorporates the object of Intentionality and discipline.
In your sound design section, you might have also mentioned the airplane scene in 'Sicario'. Near the beginning of the movie, Emily Blunts character is on a small private jet. In the scene Villeneuve takes the loud sound of the jet's engines & turns it into a crowd screaming people, followed by a jump scare. This scene is one of my favourites. It's amazing & tense. It perfectly explains her feelings about her current situation & apprehension, all without saying a single word. She only speaks once the scare has occurred, yet the tensions are still present & raw.
Love your channel thanks for the interesting topics, ideas & inspiration. 💖🤗🇨🇦
That man is one of the best directors of my generation
Agreed!
Villeneuve is the master of telling big stories through small, personal perspectives. Arrival, for example, tells two stories about human connection. One about humanity connecting with aliens that have landed on Earth and another one about Amy Adams and her relationship with her husband and daughter. He then connects these stories to each other and makes me cry.
man, I have seen the work of many directors and I've tried to understand their directing style and you always got that perfectly, keep those videos coming...
Such a distinct style spanning across a variety of genres. True master
I can't say any word that would describe my appreciation and admiration to your time, efforts, passion, and knowledge to movie industory. Thanks a lot for everything you have done guys and please keep doing the most beautiful job!
We need the f***ing trailer for DUNE.
Definitely
I kinda want it but also kinda don't want to see it, to know the least when going into the movie! :D
Hopefully in june! It is my most anticipated movie EVER
@@CockworkOrange same. Mine too. Followed by Tenet

Love your sound editing. It’s top notch.
Thanks!
Villeneuve is one of best directors working today. I absolutely love each and every movie of his.
Great video. Really helps to understand Villeneuve's mind :)
Thanks for watching!
I would love to see one on either Kubrick or Kurosawa.
In case you're wondering, the music at 3:13 is by Radiohead - You And Whose Army
thank you!!
The man is legendary. I can't imagine a creative director I'd like to work with more.
Dennis and Nolan are my two favorite working directors.
Amazing video as always
As always, a brilliant essay on the unique language of film from the perspective of some of the topshelf directors working today. Many thanks for your hard work and consistent content.
Thanks for watching!
His filmmaking style is perfect for the kind of heady, atmospheric sci-fi I love. One of the best working, period, and I LOVE his films.
Really expert analysis. Thanks.
Once again another best director
Thank you @studiobinder
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. He’s one of my favorite filmmakers. Love his work.
Thanks for watching
We need Christian Bale in a Villeneuve movie.
Love this new video, I cannot wait to learn the directing styles of other directors.
More to come!
I subscribed for the near perfect pronunciation of Denis Villeneuve.
Extremely enjoyable to watch!!
Wow I never noticed that with the music. What a great point. Great video !👏
I really love when he take a time in the middle of his movies and make a montage shot of the surrounding location with the music! Like "The Beast" scenes in Sicario. All of his movies i watch atleast will have one that scene and i really love it! My favourite director ever! 🔥
I like your breakdown and practical suggestions.
Great video!
Awesome content thanks for all you do
Thanks for watching!
I still remember the day around 6 years ago, being a teenager getting into films in which I found Enemy on my country’s Netflix. I was mesmerized by this Denis Villaneuve. With each new film that hit theaters I was more convinced that there was no one else besides Nolan who could present a film with a rich concept met with spectacle. Glad he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Thank you so much for this.
What an amazing video! Now I wanna see the Villeneuve's filmography again
Always a good time to watch a Villeneuve film!
Everything is AMAZING! Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
"Beyond the Black Rainbow" ost is legendary
Arrival and Sicario are my two favorites, thoughts of both films years later still overwhelm me.
Coming proudly fm Mtl myself, I certainly reflect on our societal values grandly painted throughout his filmography. You can view his directorial talents in his artful films. Well done, Denis.
His my favorite director and only him would have done justice to the blade runner universe like he did. Such love for the saga with his film
Very good content, keep going.
You people are fantastic and helpful
Thank you for making this.
Thanks for watching!
Villeneuve is like taking the symbolic mastery of Kubrick and blending him with the modern production design of geniuses like Fincher and Aronofsky. I’d love to see you do Kubrick next, I’m curious what you will label him as. “The Cryptographer” for Denis is perfect. I’m always unsure what will come next in his films.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for the suggestion!
The voiceover reminds me of David Attenberg😁
After seeing Prisioners for the 1st time last night, Denis has me intriged. New to your channel and love it heaps. Very informative and great work. New Sub👍🏾
My absolute favorite director in the business. His sense of scale and beauty, and his love of the source materiel with Dune, make his movies something truely special.
So beautifully explained....soooo goooood!!!!!
Thanks for watching!

Without a doubt
Pleasee do one of these on Paul Thomas Anderson next
Thanks for the tip, you should check out our Director's Playbook featuring him! ruclips.net/video/rvPj65RKYf4/видео.html
Thankfully someone has some sense around here!
No one cares about Paul Thomas Anderson and his boring movies. All his movies don't even make money...wonder where he gets his funding.
@@MrGreen-ci2mm That's a daft thing to say. By all means hold an opinion, but to suggest NO ONE likes his movies is puerile. Maybe a few intellignet movies would do you good, you seem to have a limited intelligence...as your reply will no doubt further prove to me.
@@davidlean1060 Did I say no one liked his movies ? No. Don't put words in my mouth my child.
I am a french Canadian and the Narrator pronounce Denis's last name Perfectly!!
Villeneuve is probably the most exciting, potential-filled and creative director working in the mainstream today
I knew I recognized the songs in this video. They are all from the Beyond The Black Rainbow soundtrack. Great selection.
Thank you!
I really like Dennis Villeneuve films, my personal favorite is Sicario
There's no such thing as a bad Villeneuve film!
Me too the Sicario so intense and crafted beautifully
Sir,Really Good Work for cinema & direction ,amezing
Regarding Villeneuve's use of color, I also have a mostly monochromatic approach with my wardrobe so (a) the contrast in texture and color of my accessor(ies) pop, (b) the overall aesthetic is cleaner and sleeker (which can add contrast in form if the lines and curves are at risk of being too varied), and (c) to add visual interest by subduing the borders of things and thereby piquing curiosity. I wonder if some of that are at least also part of the reason for his use of color.
I feel like everyone is just talking about Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival. I think Villeneuve's best movie is Prisoners. That movie is an absolute masterpiece!
I loved that one.
I enjoy these videos the most on all youtube.
Thanks for watching!
so good!
Thanks for watching!
Amazing Analysis. Deeper, Vibrating Cryptography. Denis Villeneuve is the New Modern Director of this Decades and the New One Starting right now.
Thanks for watching!
The voiceover for this saying, "he shot the whole film without color" without cracking up, is impressive.
Best quality content on RUclips 👍👍👌👌
I'm new to this channel. It's remarkable how you analyse each department. Being an Indian and cinephile, I'd like you to analyse Satyajit Ray. He was a polymath and inspired modern day directors like Anderson and Scorcese. Thanks!
Video about him is finally out haha
I only liked this video because you pronounced Villeneuve correctly. 💕 Thank you.
i love this director, literally my style of preference in design
Your Voice is so beautiful. You sound like a Machine that was build for narration. Thank you for that.
His movies are more heady than Nolan's. Can't wait for Dune!
How?
What do you mean by heady?
Aashish Xaxa keep waiting.
@@MrGreen-ci2mm he said denis Villeneuve films are confusing more than christopher Nolan films . Heady means mindbending and confusing
His films are Heady but not as much as Nolan's films

@@StudioBinder You are welcome .
The thing with Blade Runner is that, like the original, it gets better with each viewing. I can't say that I adored it the first time around, unlike Sicario, Arrival and Dune but the same applies to each of those.
He masters suspense.. the love making scene of Joi is close to 5 mins and no nudity just a kiss simple but with uplifting music and extreme stillness.
Kudos to the narrator. Had to mention this from a long time.
Blade runner 2049 is one of the best made film ever...💓💓
Great film :)
@Robert Jameson the OG wasn't considered as a masterpiece when it released back then...it takes time..maybe one day it will be considered
@Robert Jameson wow I strongly disagree, the movie is considered one of the best sequels ever made for a reason. It's a pure cinema masterpiece in my opinion.
Marco Piazza I just feel like it’s missing half of the soul of the first film because it lacks the Vangelis score which is in my opinion why the first is pushed to another level. And the sequel story is cool but definitely not needed after the end of the first. I find it to be an awesome companion piece to the first.
@@robertjameson4101 I see your point, however I think 2049 has a very interesting story to tell, and it tells it brilliantly. I think it also adds to the original as well. As for the score I think both are equally beautiful, Hans Zimmer's work was soo outstanding tbh the score is one of my fav things ab 2049. Idk I love both but I guess I just love Denis Villeneuve's movies. Def top 3 directors rn
