Interesting how life works. I was also religious and I once met Matisyahu at a Shabbat meal in Crown Heights somewhere around 2008-2009 when he was still religious. Shortly after when he stopped being religious, I was shocked and wondering to myself how he could have just abandoned everything. A number of years later I myself ended up straying from religion even more than he did. Now I'm kind of balancing life between the two worlds, religious and secular. You never know where life will take you.
Life takes you where you choose it to go. You walk away from the mitzvot, that's your doing. If the Chasiddich branch didn't fit, there are numerous other derechs to explore that still would hold by a kosher life.
@@user-pd7il3xz5j It's not that simple. For one thing, I'm in a non-halachic marriage and have no intention of leaving my wife for the sake of religion. I've reached out to a few Rabbis with my story, explaining to them how I'm trying to do more as far as mitzvot but that I'm not willing to abandon my non-Jewish wife for my own spiritual benefit, which I believe would be a very selfish thing to do. Also, conversion is not really an option for various reasons. They all disagreed with my reasoning. If I were to go to any orthodox shul even on holidays or an occasional Shabbat, the long-term expectation from others there would be that I would ultimately leave my wife, and I wouldn't feel comfortable in that situation. It's one of those situations where if I must choose all or nothing, then I'd have to choose nothing. But I disagree with the idea that it has to be all or nothing, and so I do what I can in my private life, without being involved with the community. Among other things, there are various things within Judaism that I disagree with, which were what led me astray to begin with. And as a cherry on top, I'm also heavily tattooed, including visible areas like my hands, neck, and some on my face. Although I'm done with my tattoo journey and don't plan to get any more, I also don't plan to laser them off. It would be impossible to laser everything off, considering how much I have, and to just laser bits and pieces would bother me from a perfectionist standpoint, walking around with half-erased tattoos. On the contrary, if I ever do become more observant, the tattoos would serve to show that even someone who's strayed as far as I did can still find their way back, at least to some degree.
