Reardon at 53 beat Parrott at the Cruicible. In season 82/3 Reardon played White 4 times and defeated him 4 times. In season 78/9 and 79/80 Reardon played Davis 3 times and beat him 3 times. In 1988 in the British open a 56 year old Reardon hammered the reigning world champion Steve Davis 5-0. Two journalists with not much of a clue and a fine player and gentleman being overly respectful to his peers and fellow pundits. Reardon was an even better player before he turned pro. Clive Everton is the only man qualified to make a list such as this.

This is way off. Reardon played White 9 times-Reardon won 4 and lost 5. Also, Reardon played Davis 17 times-Reardon won 7 and lost 10. And although you are correct that Reardon beat Davis 5-0 in 88', you don't, however, mention that Davis beat Reardon a year earlier in the 1987 World Championship 13-4 (Davis went on to win the tournament). Not to mention numerous accusations against Reardon of gamesmanship. One example being when he asked the referee to re-rack the red balls 6 times!
About the only thing you got right is Reardon did play and beat John Parrott once. And let's face it, beating John Parrott is hardly a sign you're in the top 10 greatest snooker players of all time.

The quality of opposition O Sullivan had in his career makes him the King. He had Hendry, Selby, Higgins, Williams to name just 4. That's 17 World titles between them 4 men alone. The 'greatest player' can be defined in different ways. One way would be that person most likely to beat his opponent or the one who won the highest percentage of matches. The following data is from Cuetracker.net omitting players who played in less than 200 matches (most omitted played far less): The top 10 here all played 800+ matches
    O'Sullivan 75.2%
    Trump 69.8%
    J. Higgins 69.3
    Hendry 68.9
    Selby 68.3
    Junhui 66.6
    Robertson 65.8
    Maguire 65.2
    Murphy 64.9
    Allen 64.8
note that positions 2 to 10 are within 5% points of each other; O'Sullivan is nearly 6 points higher than any of them - that, statistically, is a huge gap.
In case you wonder where the other 'great' players are here's a few former World Champ's:
    S Davis 63.32
    Parrott 59.8
    Doherty 59.25
    Griffiths 59.2
    Ebdon 56.7
    Reardon 55.8
    A Higgins 55.4

You guys messed up by letting Robo’s one single achievement overshadow your good judgment!!
    Davis 3 period. Case closed!!
And Robo over White?! Only because of the importance you place on WC!
White’s LEGENDARY overall career puts him in tenth place, but it’s crucial he’s there. When Robo retires in 19 more years then we can redo the list if he’s added anything.
But for God’s sake all Davis did in an era where there’s 6 tournaments a season for God’s sake man!! Higgins is playing for 25 years in an era where there’s a GD tournament every WEEK!! There’s like 45 ranking tournaments a year guys!!! So Robo’s “great” feat will soon be broken as well.
Davis WAS a trail blazer for his day! Cause without his greatness there’s no Hendry to gun for his records!!

      UK Champion
      Masters Champion
2 World Championship Finals (Should have won both)
      6 World Championship Semi-Finals
      3 UK Championship Finals
Stats aside just one look at the era he played in and the players he was competing for trophies with to still do that well means that absolutely Matthew Stevens deserved atleast a mention but i gotta agree with you, with his obvious natural talent he SHOULD have been Top 20 but his lack of bottle & mental toughness (again i say this as a long term fan of his) His blown leads especially at The Crucible are infamous, he will unfortunately go down as someone who although done reasonably well was more often than not the nearly man and a player who in the end failed to live up to their massive early promise and potential. So yeah Top 30 for me too but not 20.
Dott i agree with simply for his 3 finals which puts him above Bingham for me but Top 20 i'm not too sure about. Hunter as good a player as he was and incidently was best friends with Stevens i don't think as an overall player was better than Stevens.
I really don't know why but it annoys me how somehow like Bingham a journeyman for the first 15 years of his career has been World Champion and the likes of Jimmy White & Stevens haven't, taking nothing away from him credit where credit is due but it seems a travesty to me.

And, of course, he is also a crowd-pleaser. I wonder if there are any records of spectator attendance when he is participating compared to when he is absent from a tournament? As an aside, I think Alex Higggins might have achieved a higher status had he not struggled with other issues; and I think Paul Hunter would have been on this list had he not died at such a young age (this reflection coming from a senior citizen!). Turned the debate off after 5 minutes. Talking nonsense for the most part. Dominated by BBC stats about century breaks. Don't these men know that instead of tournaments in the 70's and before the players made their money in challenge matches. They were just as competitive as tournaments as the winner of the match got more money. Alex Higgins made over 300 competitive centuries by the time he was 22. And anyone who saw Reardon play and can appreciate snooker would have him very high on the list. To have Neil Robertson higher than john spencer on the basis that he made 100 centuries in a season is laughable.

@Eric Lewis but dude selby is a multiple winner of the worlds but robertson only has 1 win, dude jimmy played with flair, people loved watching him play, but he was in 6 world finals not 1. it is criminal he was not in the top 10.

    • @SuperChalkster
      @SuperChalkster 3 года назад

@Eric Lewis agreed, But the list wasnt made up of abilty. Otherwise Jimmy would have easily trumped Joe Davis. He may be the godfather of snooker and have 15 world titles but the standard of play wouldnt compete with Jimmy. So this is my point. The list wasnt made up how you just described it. So it is criminal for Jimmy not to be top 10. The dude was in 6 world finals playing attractive attacking snooker. lol

For me Stephen Hendry is The GOAT
Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby and Ding Junhui are the only players to win five ranking titles in the same season.
Ronnie, Mark and Ding did it when there where 20 ranking titles available.
Hendry did it when there where only 13 ranking titles available.
    Also:
Ten players have completed a career Triple Crown, having won each of the Triple Crown events at least once. These players are Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy. Only Davis, Hendry and Williams have won all three Triple Crown events in the same season, and Hendry is the only player to achieve this feat twice.
    Also:
It took Ronnie 25 years to achieve his 19 ranking titles while it took Hendry only 10 years.
    Also:
I mean five consecutively world titles for Hendry, he was world number one for eight consecutively years

The comment about the different playing conditions (thicker cloths, heavier balls) that one of them made needs to be given more weight in my opinion. They're all riding the sports hype gravy train though so it's in their interests to over-emphasise modern players and wax lyrical about how hard the modern era is in relative terms. In truth I doubt you can compare the two as Hendry wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective in Reardons day, and O'Sullivan would simply have cracked long before reaching the potential that a mentally weak modern game has allowed him to scale. Oh and Robertson in the top ten?? Really? I rest my case.
