  • BANJO BUDDY, Singing with Banjo & Orchestra - Let’s Misbehave, Fox-Trot (Porter), Brunswick 1928 (USA)
NOTE: Banjo Buddy was a pseudonym used in the 1920s by singer and banjoist Harold Sandelman (b. 1905 in a small town in Michigan - d. 2008). He is an almost completely forgotten artist today, despite a long life and quite successful periods in his life when he sang on stage in New York and toured the USA in the mid-1920s with Libby Holman.
This famous Cole Porter song was written in 1927 for Irene Bordoni as the female lead in Porter's first major Broadway production of „Paris”. Banjo Buddy's 1928 version is the earliest recording of the song's full lyrics. Earlier, the song with partial lyrics was a hit for Irving Aaronson and his Commanders, with partial lyrics for the Brunswick label by Scrappy Lambert, Billy Hillpot with Ben Bernie's orchestra in December 1927 and Tom Stacks with Harry Reser's band.

Thank you so much for sharing this totally forgotten 20s artist! His catchy and witty rendition of this very famous tune is outstanding, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

It seems incredible to me that a simple boy with a banjo and a country accent, now entirely forgotten, could have created a version of this great hit to rival the famous and now classic performance by Irving Aaronson's orchestra. And so it happened.

Yes, this sophisticated and chick Cole Porter hit takes on a special flavour in those hilbilly mouths. It's absolutely delightful, I agree, and thanks for pointing it out :-)

Not often that I find a forgotten artist that I don't even know.
