I’ve seen so many videos and comments from locals basically trying to steer people away from Wilmington. Honestly it makes me wonder if these people have ever been to the places that get mentioned like NY or California. I was born and raised in NY and lived for over a decade in California and I can tell you that the things North Carolina people complain about are like a picnic to those of us who escaped either of those two locations. I understand the panic that comes along with all the outsiders “invading” your small town, but if you really knew what we were leaving behind, you’d be thanking your lucky stars for traffic and mosquitoes.
Who cares? If they don't like it, then THEY can LEAVE. Simple as that. They do not OWN NC. Also We have the right to go where we want and make decisions that may or may not work for us. We wouldn't know til we try it. Don't let unhappy, miserable, cold-hearted people get to you 💖
I moved from Northern California after the wildfires to Minneapolis right before Covid... and now thinking of moving to Wilmington where my family currently lives. I've visited N. Carolina roughly 5-6 times in the last couple of years and, yeah, like any place it has its pluses/minuses but I think I could make a happy life there. People are really great. That's a massive plus for me. Edit: Not to mention, some great restaurants. I agree, it's all about the non-chain places.

I grew up nearby to Wilmington and he is absolutely right in all of what he is saying. I would highly recommend moving to the area and you wont regret it!
Another issue is the professional job market isn’t as strong as other areas like Raleigh and the big cities. If you’re retired or have a solid remote job it’s not an issue but if you’re a young professional and plan to job search be aware of this issue. Hopefully larger businesses will consider building offices here in the future and bring more jobs.
We lived there 06-07, went back for a visit last June to see if we wanted to move back. It had changed so much we decided against it. Great town, just not for us anymore.
But what about the forever chemicals in the water in Wilmington, the water is not safe to drink or shower in and that’s not going away.. absolute number 1 reason to question wether it’s actually safe to live there . I’m surprised that wasn’t mentioned at the beginning of the video!
Definitely was an issue for awhile. Cape Fear Public Utility just spent $43million to install eight Granular Activated Carbon filters to remove PFAS compounds. According to them they are now free of PFAS and GenX. Good to keep in mind though! There are also some home installation options to help mitigate any other issues as well!

Hi Nice video, I have lived in Wilmington over 40 years and Wilmington is pretty descent. Downtown Wilmington is fun for a walk and its restaurants. Wrightsville Beach is Beautiful in the Summer and popular with sun bathers, also the barrier islands like Masonboro are a hit with boaters as they are unspoiled, undeveloped and very relaxing, but boat traffic can be heavy as so many have boats around Wilmington. Wilmington has a mixed use area called Mayfaire that is very nice for shopping, restaurants and living that is close to Wrightsville Beach and a Neighborhood called Landfall that is a hit with some high end home buyers that is private and well managed.

Strangely I had bad hay fever in my youth when living in Elon College and Upstate NY, Genesee County Rochester. For reasons of women and work I moved to Fort Lauderdale for a couple of years. I did not suffer hay fever there and never again anywhere else. The culture of Wilmington did not welcome me. I was in movie making and even in my work I still felt like an outsider. I drifted around from Cary to Greensboro till ending up in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Carrboro weather is superior. In all of North Carolina the culture Southern as it is still gets to me.

I live in Wilmington and you are right about the traffic. If people from other places would not move here we would not have the traffic that we have. Also we have a lot of college students living here which causes a lot of traffic.

I'm coming for the first time to Charlotte, the US to stay with a friend this summer, a friend I met online back in 2008, he's booking here "wilmington" for a long weekend, house on the ocean front and also a few days in the mountains! Absolutely can't wait to experience the 4th if July week, always seen it on TV and dreamt of experiencing it myself. I'm from Northern Ireland myself, so a dream holiday for me! Bring it on. I'm a single man with no children or partner, so stress free lol.. Ps. Is sharks a real issue or something ya should worry about in these waters? Lol.

What about the water quality? I hear any area south of the Cape Fear river is an absolute NO GO. Ive personally seen the toxic foam on Oak Island beach. What is the current state of the water quality North of the Cape Fear? Is the drinking water safe? Is it safe to swim?
You are right here, a lot of people that live in Wilmington now are coming from out of the area. It has really helped this area grow! Some are moving to Leland which is a smaller rural city right outside of Wilmington, 15mins away, so they can experience both.
Yeah, they use to have a sign at the start of I-40 "Barstow CA 2,445 Miles". NCDOT had to take it down because so many people pulled over to get their picture taken in front of the sign.
Is Wilmington itself affected by hurricanes, or mainly beach communities? And for mosquitoes, ThermaCell products (Amazon, Walmart) WORK, so much better than Citronella, etc. And, was the 105 you mentioned having last year actual temperature or heat index?
Wilmington is affected by most hurricanes that come through the area. We are so close to the beaches and have the Cape Fear River so its hard to avoid them. The beaches do get the worst of it though. Thanks for the tips on the mosquitoes!! 105 was the heat index I believe. I do remember the actual temp getting to 95 on one day last year.
Yes hurricanes happen but after 1995 the state changed a lot building codes to hurricane proof houses and have much better retention ponds and irrigation systems in newer places
Lived there for 17yrs. To many homeless people and pan handlers. Seems like everyone had there kids on some kind of drugs because everyone thought something was wrong with there kids. I think everyone but me was on disability. To many Waterbugs here in ohio we call them roaches. Bedbugs everywhere. I was happy to move back to southern ohio.

I was in Wilmington, NC this past weekend for a conference and we stayed at Hotel Ballast in downtown. I must say the city and the hotel...underwhelming and outdated. All of the wasteland marsh surrounding the battleship was an eyesore. We did have some good food at Big Toney's; some of the best Clam Chowder I've ever had. And we had an absolute blast at this speak easy called Earnest Money & Sons. Impeccable craft cocktails and great service! Outside of that...the city feels old, raggedy, and left behind... trying to revitalize but still fighting progress. We met a couple from Topsail Beach who said it was nicer there. Either way, I wont' be returning and definitely not moving there.
Having just left South Brunswick County NC for North Myrtle Beach, SC, if we're talking TRUTH about why affluent Americans should NOT move to Wilmington, that FACT starts with the letter "B." Too many bees. Way too many bees.

I'm from Hawaii originally, moved out here 2 years ago. It feels like living on Oahu, the culture is very similar, people are friendly, food and family are central to everything. Everyone is welcome in Wilmington, we don't discuss politics and we don't judge our neighbors. This is a self governing society and our neighbors take care of us as much as we take care of them. The Aloha spirit is alive here. Best of luck on your journey. 🤙

Parking at any beach, except Fort Fisher, is a pain and expensive.
Plan on parking on the outskirts now, the illegals pile in and take over the whole lot and picnic areas before sunrise.
