Thank you for this video! I’ve wanted to try the throwing hatchet but I’ve never known where to start. I really like that you go in depth about the different uses, pros, and cons with each option in the skill tree. Also, thank you for comparing the three throws & two throws/beserk, that was extremely helpful.
You can do a throwing berserk cancel. You pop berserk after the throw animation while walking forward, it's much more consistent than light attack canceling.
The timing on the cancel of Berserk is casting it 600 ms after clicking throw while walking forward. Also canceling the animation will give you one more toss. If you plan to swap weapons a lot, berserk isn't worth it cause you'll cancel it on weapon swap which is a big dps loss.
Good point! While that cancel does exist, I'm honestly not a fan of it. The time window to use it feels extremely awkward compared to most other cancels since you have to actively delay the ability use. I don't know if it's just me, but I miss the window for the cancel more often than I land it, meaning I end up wasting both the extra wait time as well as still having to wait out the full berserk animation. In comparison, I find the berserk melee cancels way easier and more reliable to use.
Love you content, but you really need to consider adding a link in the description w/ the build calculator, etc. for the specific builds. Very helpful indeed.
was GA/WH with BB for distance but always thought BB not very distance. Just built this one with 2 points in Berserker, great fun killing Turkelon, picked up a legendary hatchet with ERT for 1k so obviously not popular, maybe until now.
Hi, great guide as always. Really appreciate all your content, really makes my casual NW life alot more enjoyable :) I am currently testing the setup, and i wanted to pair the hatchet as a secondary with both the greatsword and a spear (having one as primary, the other one as a hot swap in my inventory). I have fortifying perforate on my spear, and the crosscut perk om my greatsword, and was wondering what kind of build setup for you would make for both the greatsword and a spear, to align well with the throwing hatchet setup above? I am going 100 con, then full dex the rest... Is the plan atleast :P Any tips & tricks to make that kind of setup work, would be highly appreciated.
Oh good question! I kinda just assumed that it doesn't apply, but it possibly could considering the hatchet throw works more like a basic attack for some interactions.
Is there a farmable legendary light armor set that would work well for this set up? Global drop would be great, not running mutations yet. I have a perfect med chest need every else.
Really like the idea of this build a lot. The issue is I feel like I would use the hatchet as a main weapon isnt of a secondary and I am guessing it isnt going to preform well as a main. Is that the case DukeSloth?
@DukeSloth or someone else is it possible to use a programmable mouse like a g502 to just hold down a mouse button? I’m an older dude with arthritis and carpal tunnel’s problems… holding the right mouse and left clicking is hard for me to do 🥴. Or is this not permissible? I’ve tried doing a macro already and it’s hanging up in the throwing stance tyia
Great explanation as always mate. What button or skill are you using when throwing the hatchet? I spec’d the same skill tree but I can’t seem to throw without using a skill button. I thought it was a heavy attack but still can’t do it. Does this make sense?
Hey just thought id pop back in because I feel like you briefly talked about it but the perk that says "basic attacks" does work with the throwing hatchets, is there any other "basic attacks" or any other interactions that do work? as far as I'm aware that one u said is the only one, i always hated how they dont count as light attacks for weapon perks like enchanted, chain, etc. but maybe I'm wrong in thinking none of them work?
Hey Duke... have you compared the 30% emp rending throw on weapon vs the 20% on armor in favor of 3 dmg perks on weapon? I can see jagged for the addition debuff on target dmg/attunement/ and perhaps enchanted or bane? not sure if this would close the gap on the 10% loss of not having on weapon but perhaps would make it more flexible for pvp i.e. having plagued crits on weapon. Just a thought! Keep up the good work!!
i would love to see what greatsword build u use with this because i was searching for this combination of build ( Throwing hatchet and GS ) please lemme know or make a video for it :P and what ur armor and stuff look like and what armor type are u in light medium or heavy from the gameplay it looks like light but i bit gear showcase whould be nice :)
can you do the math on cross build with INT where you use a cut pristine on the other item? I understand this would be long and involved, but I was just curious what you think would be the best. I have considered GS/IG with a cut pristine aquamarine in my GS because I run Band of Ocean's Oath
“Fixed an issue where light attacks were prioritized over an aimed throw after leaving a throw ability while holding down the aim button” is this the update we’ve been waiting for??
Yeah, at this point definitely! There have recently been multiple big updates, one overhauling the early leveling experience, one giving us a new high level region with a lot of good loot easily catch up in progression and one that introduced fresh start servers (no one can transfer into these from older servers). So getting into is as a new player is much, much easier now, with the early experience being more streamlined and the catchup grind being much faster. There are also plenty of PvE dungeons for max level now. Even if you don't play it forever, you'll definitely get your money's worth. The game isn't perfect yet, but it has come a very long way since launch.
Can you link your gear please. I respect and got a new hatchet and did the tree like you have. I have more str and dex then you but I only hit for about 1500 so it has to be my gear. 625 gear score. Thank you very much! Pastor Mark
Not sure which gear i was using during the video but i have nothing on my gear that increases damage other than a slash damage ring. As long as your hatchet has empowering rending throw+bane and you're wearing light armor, you should reach the same numbers as me in an expedition. The only potential problem at that point could be your teammates not applying enough rends!
Social Distancing is a quick escape. BB has a way worse rend, since it requires you to be very close to the target, has a shorter duration and a wayyy longer cooldown. Rends are one of the most important things to have on your offhand weapon. BB also doesn't double scale with STR and DEX, so for mainhands like Greatsword and Spear, it definitely has lower dps then hatchet.
I would like to see this in pvp. I’m running the full throwing side currently with blunderbuss, but I’m old and new to it, so I’d be interested in seeing someone with skill pull it off.
Even though throwing hatchet are fine now, theres no reason to go a full build for this. If u want range dmg go Bow which deals WAY more dmg forr dex builds, and BB for STR builds. Even with mixed builds Bow most likely will outperforrm TH vs bosses since u can spam rapid shot, explosive and pen shot. Also, theres no reason to go Hatchet and GS in dungeons either, both weapons do the same thing basically. None of them add good CC, enough weaken or rend, their focus is raw DPS, which makes taking both weapons in a dungeon pointless. If u want a range option for hatchet or GS go bow/BB depending on your build.
This is a very confusing comment. You say there's a lack of Rend between Hatchet and GS (which can apply 25% rend total easily and consistently), but then suggest bow instead? Same thing for the lack off CC, using bow would just worsen that. The point is very obviously to use one at close range and the other at further distances, as I explained at the very start of the video. The are *almost* no serious mutation DPS builds that go full STR or DEX only. Hatchet, GS, SNS and Spear all use mixed builds. GA and WH are rarely used as MH because their dps is simply lower. A GA/BB build could never keep up with any mixed stat/hatchet option in regards to dps. The only outlier I could see to this is an evade Rapier build, which can commit to full dex/int. Running Rapier/bow build is possible, but you run into the same issues that you complained about with GS/Hatchet, only to a much larger extent. Your rends will be low and conditional, the vast majority of your damage is single target and you have very limited CC.
@@DukeSloth I was saying that going range hatchet is a waste o time. There are superior range weapons, by a lot. So why? I get if u want some hybrid hatchet for Ennead... but why bring hatchet AND GS? is not a great combo for dps. Spear apply 30%+ rend alone + giving u 30% fortify + CC + 44% weaken. Hammer gives u great CC + weaken + 30% rend + other debuffs. GA gives u the best dungeon skill in the game + 25% 360 degree weaken. VG as a secondary ill instantly give the team 15% empower + stam recovery + stam leeching + 20% HP leeching. Theres no reason to go 2 full dps weapons. There are much better secondary weapon choices, specially if u are going to go this range hatchet build. And u dont need to go full STR o DEX forr your secondary, u apply the debuff and change back. Thats why all speed runs are done with hatchet + spears/hammers/GA/VG, not GS. Also u say that u cant go full STR o DEX and comepete with this build? One spear doing less dps but applying 30% rend + 44% weaken adds so much more than H/GS that it doesnt even compare. And u can reset stats if u like in 5s before the boss while u enter... u can go spear for debuffs and bow for dps in that encounter and u ill do crazy dps and great party utility. Mutations is not only about dps. I think the comment was clear.

As a main greatsword build, how effective would be using throwing hatchet as secondary? I`m trying to figure what would be better. BB or TH.
perfect timing! found a empowered rending throw/vorpal/ enchanted hatchet yesterday
Ohh nice, congrats!
Will it work with rogue?

Awesome video as always! I’m going to switch to this for dungeon runs. Ty again!!
I guess dps for pve is worse with berserk but for pvp i prefer it . Cool to know that in pve i can still use it with good dps.

Hello, please tell me what is better to choose for pvp and pve, GS+Bow or GS+Throwing Hatchet?
Great video
people rly underestimate how good the CD reduction is when bosses are at 30% HP the burst is so high on hatchet, nice vid tho!
Desperate Refresh isn't based on the bosses' hp. It's based on your own. With a throwing hatchet build, you'll very rarely be under 30% hp.
Buccaneer's Bounty is a good starter weapon for a throw build.
Duke can this be used as your main weapon and maybe put a spear in there for utility

does empower rending throw stacked when use on armor and weapon?
Do you know if rogue is ok to use with throwing hatchet?
I tried the build but it hits 2k or something at most. Not even close to 3k in a 5 person dungeon. What went wrong?
So did I!!!
ty for the video
i really want to use this build, my only question is.. what main weapon can go along with the hatchet? Spear? Bow? Sword and Shield?
Greatsword is a good choice :)
I’ve been running this with GS strength build. Great sustain and dps.
Would bow combination be better for keeping the distance
