Elias: your abilities will help you during the unknowing
Jon, 5 minutes into the unknowing: what the FUCK is a cigarette
But in the end, his powers helped Tim see.
My roommates probably think I'm insane I laughed so hard at this!! XD
@fletcher8210 Tim's one liner had me laughing in a way that made my dog look at me with concern.

Basira's the closest to mentally healthy in the group which is intriguing
I would die for basira
Actually, she's remarkably resilient. She made better use of what she's learned (the eye, y'know) than Jon, without spooky seeing powers. She remained rational when all she had left that was rational was herself. She might have not been in a healthy situation in this ep, but if it weren't for Tim in the beginning she probably would have ended up being the hero.
I feel like Basira's been high on some good weed before so she's got this.
You don’t listen to TMA for mentally stable characters, you listen for the chaos
Or you listen because you love them all too much and you just can't stop getting your heart yanked out and smashed against the pavement every time you hope they'll finally be happy. Help me please.
Also, y'know, I'm a sucker for those spooky metaphysics. Season 5 has WRECKED me so far.
Martin: I mean, Daisy's a "rabid dog".
Daisy: *attacks the mailman*

I never even thought about the werewolf lady hating mailmen being a running joke, thank you so much for this fantastic new headcanon
I SPAT TEA ALL OVER MY KEYBOARD BECAUSE OF THIS
Can I just point out how incredibly cool Basira is? She just *reasons her way out of magic mind-control* with pure steely logic and an iron-clad sense of self. She's *amazing.*
i think she tries to calm herself down but it doesnt help her get anywhere, she just isnt panicking
Okay spoilers but
it got her out so i was wrong. She supposedly crawled out of the radius of the ritual and the bomb. So.. Slay
Edit: i didnt add enough new lines to hide the spoilers the first time
She literally just did a “Ight imma head out” to the unknowing XD
I wonder if it was weird at all for real life Jonathan having the two characters played by his parents rant about how much of a disapointment he is
OOOOhhh, thats so weird XD

It's impressive.... They have established just episodes before that Jon's power not only makes a person reveal the truth when he asks a question, but clears their mind so they give the fullest truth possible, organizing their thoughts into something coherent.
All of that hilarious, cringy episode was put there to establish the very moment Jon asks Tim who he is and "What are you holding in your hand".....
He's Forcefully clearing Tim's mind so he sees exactly wtf is really going on.
Good catch! I don’t think I ever realised that before! 😲
thats an amazing observation
I can't decide if he would make a great or terrible therapist
I thought he was just grounding him like ppl do when you’re having a panic attack! That makes so much more sense!!

I keep having to pause and walk around because I keep getting close to a panic attack. This is by far the only episode to do that so I honestly congradulate the team on that. This is the only legitimately scary episode to me by far in this season.

The ritual Elias showed them before with these weird machines also involved the protagonist not knowing what his hands were and "making a fist with his feet". Apparently this is something that always happens
@@germanerd6148 yeah that was such a cool detail I totally missed the first time but listening to it again my brain went "ohhhhh"
If I hadn't had full context of this episode I would have thought this would have be cause by Michael
I have to wonder if the Watcher's Crown will be similarly literal
Hearing that music and seeing those lights during the first minute of the podcast which is usually the only thing that stays mostly the same for more than 110 episodes and here is completely changed makes me very uncomfortable.
I got big nostalgic feels for how the Gravity Falls finale episodes of Weirdmageddon were also different.

Yeah.. true to the stranger
It scared the shit out of me
When I tell you I fuckin froze upon seeing/hearing the intro. Holy shit that was powerful.
I think the strangest thing was not recognising it was Jon speaking at the start. Hearing him sound so confused, desperate and vulnerable with so different from the usual tired and indifferent manner of his speech.
YEAH it was so weird!! And also like really sad once I dis figure out it was Jon???

severe confusion, actually
*mild* confusion???
this is mild????
MILD??!
If anyone was curious, the bad joke Tim makes at 15:23 is based on a joke that’s existed since the 1800s (at least) which was about a doctor telling a depressed patient to go see a clown performing (usually called “Pagliacci”), but the patient is the clown out of costume. In the 1910s the joke re-emerged, with the performer (out of costume) referred to as Grimaldi.
After Nikola said “that’s not funny” I said out loud “actually it is, very funny” 😂

Basira: logics her way out of being lied to
Daisy: anti-logics her way out of being lied to ("its me, Basira" "no, your not, because nothing is anything")
Imagine being gaslit that way...
"You sound stressed. You know I hear the Great Grimaldi's in town. You should go cheer yourself up."
"But Tim... I am Grimaldi."
"I know."
jon snapping everytime a monster mentions sasha,,, ouch
Even in this state. T_T Even if he might not entirely remember her.
I still snap whenever a monster mentions Sasha they have no right! They're Sasha privileges are revoked
Basira knew basically nothing but still managed to hang so tight to the little she knew to save herself. Queen.
The fact that Jon almost immediately put his trust in them and asks for constant reassurance is not only good for showing the effects of The Unknowing, but it's also an amazing way to show that Jon Genuinely is trusting people, because he Specifically Told Himself he would trust them
I know I shouldn't be laughing but "smoking kills" and the pipe joke are genuinely hilarious oh no
edit: "You are you, and you are in a place. Now." this should be stressing me out but I can't stop laughing
I assume the laughter in that take was genuine, it's just such a funny line

You might say they were…triggered.
Jon: I'm gonna punch you!
Nikola (?): do you even know what a hand is

I feel like with the skins Nikola has,she can copy the voices. With Breekon and Hope trying to copy Basira and Nikola trying to copy Tim,they dont have their skin so you cant hear their voice. Also i like to think the tape recorder is like spinning around picking up everyones part of the conversation like its on a merry-go-round!
ogh my god thats an amazing visual for the tape recorder, bc it didnt click on and off

The visual of the tape recorder doing that made me laugh
The way tim ended up is heartbreaking, but god fucking dam it this was the most badass exit they couldve given him. So cathartic, him confronting Grimoldi and getting to be the last one to crack a joke and have a laugh at their expense for once at last.

Amazing! I really think everyone was a bit too hard on John. After all, he had no idea what was going and wasn't really told anything until long into his taking the mantle of archivist. He was a jerk, but I never felt he deserved quite as much flak as he got. Can't wait to start the next series!
my thoughts exactly! thank you!
he deserved nothing wtf 😭 i love him from ep 1 till now
He's not a jerk, he's a paranoid necrotic stress ball who didnt want to die. His biggest crime was being paranoid around his coworkers, which is honestly understandable since he knows one of them killed his predecessor
@@bandidocavalier Exactly. Not really sure why people are so hard on him. He tries to shoulder as much responsability as he can, and to the best extent of his knowledge (and humanity), tries to protect his friends and employees

Yes they're brilliant and really up the Creepy Dramatic Climax factor.
yeah they were so good!
“Doctor, I’m depressed,” the man says; life is harsh, unforgiving, cruel. The doctor lights up. The treatment, after all, is simple. “The great clown Grimaldi is in town tonight,” the doctor says, “Go and see him! John also said it when he find out thet Sasha is Not!sasha, so yeah
Poor Jon! He always gets so upset when somebody talks bad about Sasha.
“Smoking kills” BEST LINE EVER
I noticed how she said "just close your eye" as in singular, indicating their forms had changed and likely represented the watcher. Just a head with one big eye maybe. I love details like that.
A few episodes ago, I joked with myself that the Dance of the Unknowing was like Weirdmageddon, but with less geometry. But now I see that it is an awful lot like Weirdmageddon because even the intro is different this time around. XD I think this might be my favorite yet.
As soon as the episode started I went *oh shit*
EDIT: jupppp that feeling lasted for a solid 16 minutes I'm great I'm good this is okay really
I went "OOH" and my excitement and anticipation built up

Basira is so impressive, mentally walking through this madness
the way the focus shifts from person to person, the calliope music playing in the background, makes it feel like we're on a rotating carousel
Greg Grimaldis' in town?? He owes me fifteen bucks and I aim to collect!
I see you are a person of culture as well
THANK YOU I couldn't get it out of my head it was driving me nuts that no one else made the reference
The most terryfying thing is that the cigarette joke actually made me chuckle despite horrors happening
This episode was soooo good !! The sound design of Nikola's voice overlaping Leitner's and Gertrude's ones is so pleasing and well done!
Also I'm gonna hold on to the same hope I had with Sasha that Tim is somehow still alive. Please. I don't want his life to end like this. (It's not gonna happen, I know, but I need a moment okay?)
I think he might have just Jude Perry'd himself into the Desolation. Especially with his recent fascination with destruction and suffering.
I feel like maybe Tim always wanted to go out on a badass one-liner.
Sacha "Whatever her name was" I'm reeeling
And I realized that I actually don't remember her full name... I cried
I would kill for a full version of the opening music its so good ;v;
I KNOW RIGHT???? GOD ITS SO GOOD
I only got it the second time listening that Jon questioning Tim is what saved them all. The eye made Tim tell the truth, which cut through the delusion as he answered
You know it’s gonna be good when the intro music turns circus themed
im a little (really) late but I like how Jon still gets so angry at the Sasha impersonation even though he has no idea what the hell is going on
My heart literally burns, I'm fairly sure we just heard Tim die. Fairly sure we just heard him essentially pull the trigger on himself, to hurt the clown sure but.... We never got to hear him actually smile or really be okay ever again. Not once.
No don’t worry he’s fine, he just went on a kayaking trip he’ll be back for the finale don’t worry
The sound design in this episode was so good!
"You killed him!" Ouch!!! they might be the bad guys but still. Ouch!
I felt so sad for him suddenly...
The conversation from 8:13, especially the joke at 8:24 about smoking, is so goddamn funny to me. I think it might be because I can't take anything Jurgen Leitner says seriously. Also the "cigarette or pipe" wordplay? The "if I wasn't so dead I'd be impressed?" Iconic.
Oh dear god this is 16 minutes of condensed chaos and its making me uncomfortable
I imagine one of the Breekon and Hope guys wearing a fake moustache going "Hello yes I am Basira give me the gun Daisy."
I think it's right that john ultimately screwed up and tim is the one who did it

I mean, with all the flags I kinda expected this but it sTILL HURTS.
Basira staying so level headed was awesome, but jeez i'm very very worried for everyone else.
"I don't understand"
"And you never will again :)"
It upsets me that everyone went into this knowing they were likely going to die, but Tim is the only one that did. Jon and Daisy survived out of perverse luck/circumstance and Basira literally reasoned her way out of the absence of reason. But Tim, if he had survived I feel like he could have healed so much and felt like stopping rituals to protect people could have been his new rightout purpose and I would have been delighted to see that growth. But no, we see a man broken by guilt and fear and loneliness kill himself because he can't cope anymore and it's heartbreaking.
- Jon remembered himself and his powers when he was called "Archavist" and used his powers to force Tim to to see the truth.
- Daisy is a Hunter, a follower of the Hunt that is generated from the fear of the hunted animals, she needs no reason to function. Hell, her being in this situation probably made her stronger.
- Barisa is plot armor.
- Tim was suicidal from the moment he know about The Unknowing. He participated in the mission for revenge and his death.
Honestly, I have kind of a hard time piecing out the differences between the Stranger and the Spiral. All of this deception and tricking the senses really makes me think of the Spiral. I know they all kind of overlap, but it's just kinda hard to parse out sometimes
They’re technically all part of fear itself so
I think the Stranger is supposed to be the hidden and unknown whereas the Spiral is the distorted and half-known.
the Stranger is a perversion of authenticity and originality, the Spiral is a perversion of reality.
The Stranger also pretends to be something when it is something else, while in the case of the Spiral, you can’t be sure if that something is a something in the first place.
I'd say that the Spiral distorts perception, while the Stranger distorts knowledge. With the Spiral, everything around you is unreliable, but you remain. However, with the Stranger, it's your own mind that becomes twisted and warped.
I don't know if this makes any sense? Well anyway, the Entities aren't really separate, individual concepts; the lines that distinguish them are blurred, so perhaps it's natural that they both bleed into each other.
"sometimes I think I’m just not built for names. a hundred puppets, a hundred pointless names"

Wow, what a penultime episode for this season. Basira being an absolute boss and staying as level-headed as possible, Daisy going 100% feral and giving in to the Hunt. Jon being emotionally tortured by the Stranger, Sarah Baldwin making an appearance, and finally Jon helping Tim see the detonator and end things.
One thing I don't get, however, is the Grimaldi reference. Can anyone explain?
I'm pretty sure it's a reference to a circus?
@@miratarnish6316 I got it: Grimaldi was the artist/clown in Martin's story, the one who took his brother? At least it rings a bell.
I was pretty confused about that too actually, so I looked it up on the wiki. Apparently(except for the “Great Grimaldi” part), it’s a line for line quoting of the Pagliacci joke, where a literal depressed clown goes to the doctor and asks for advice on how to treat it. The doctor says that he should visit the Pagliacci show that has just recently come into town, to which the clown responds: “I am Pagliacci.” The exact one can be found on goodreads.
TL;DR: Tim’s referencing the Pagliacci joke.
Everyone but Daisy: WTF IS GOING ON???
Daisy: *laughs in gore*
Going out with a bang- what a classic Tim move. Absolute icon
during the scene where "gertrude" and... "j"... "jeorgon"? you know who im talking about---
were criticizing jon
the image i saw, vividly, in my head, was Nikola Orsinov- tall, sharp, all joints and stretched plastic limbs- looming high in the darkness, her skeletal hands puppeteering the torn skin of the two dead curators
she's almost completely faded against the shadows, gertrude and lightner illuminated by speckled, almost- dusty, spotlights, as they dangle in front of jon
that is such a cool visual!! i personally saw it as nikola kept switching between wearing their faces, like she’d turn her head all the way around or quickly twitch her head and she’d be wearing a different face
That “smoking kills” bit was really good
"The only me is me.
Are you sure the only you is you?"
I love that everyone had a chance to shine but that one liner from Tim at the end was amazing.
Also
I kinda suspected Daisy might be a hunter.
This is going to sound really off topic but just hold on, there’s a point. So, I have a neurological condition and one of the symptoms is that I really don’t absorb medication in the same way as everyone else. In hindsight, I should have realised this would be the same for things like cannabis, but I really didn’t. So when I was 22, I had cannabis in tea. To cut a long story short, this entire episode is very reminiscent of what happened to me for 14 hours! 😂
i was just thinking this is how i've felt on multiple bad drug trips on shrooms, acid, and weed. completely losing touch with reality and who i am or how to human
