  • Kimono dressing is a two person job. Most modern Japanese women rely on the help of licensed kimono dressers to keep their folds in check. Professional kimono dresser Masae Satouchi is walking us through each step of how the traditional garment is arranged.

Great video but why did the dressing process stop at the last datejime? That is a stabilizer that goes under a full obi, with an obiage and an obijime to finish it off. Wearing just a datejime on top of a furisode kimono would be like wearing your bra on the outside of a formal gown.

My thoughts exactly! Maybe they're focusing strictly on the kimono, not the obi, but it's clearly unfinished.

The furisode is very specifically a long-sleeved variety of kimono for young, unmarried women; it's not just the outer layer. Also, where is the obi? It's often the most difficult and interesting part of the kimono.

Incredible detail!! I'd definitely need a professional dresser for my kimono collection. They're huge!! 😍 Meticulous work.

Don't let the video fool you, you can absolutely learn how to put any kind of kimono on yourself, no professionals required. ;)

I’ve been wearing kimono daily for years now. They’re easy to put on yourself. It takes me 5-15 minuets depending on how detailed I want it to be. This video isn’t even good. She’s missing many steps and doing other steps incorrectly.

Where’s her final obi? The look isn’t officially complete.

    Isn't several parts missing?
Like obi and the things stiffening the obi shape that you put between the layers.

Hmmm I think this video could have been done a little better with more research and thought. Why not show the obi being put on? Why show this stage performance style outfit as a representation of kimono, when most people who wear kimono will never wear an outfit like this? There are other things that I could be picky about, but others have already brought them up. My main concern is mostly the lack of obi and the mismatch between the name of the video/description with the actual content itself.
Showing a fancy outfit for dance or stage performance is fine, but maybe describe it that way? That way people don't get the wrong idea about what kimono is. Also, please don't say that "you need a licensed kimono dresser" to wear kimono. That will discourage people from ever trying if they live outside Japan. But anyone can learn how to dress themselves in kimono! And we should be encouraging that!

This video is really confusing. There are a lot of things not explained, and left out, like obi, obij-jime and obi-age, and it seems she is wearing an uchikake (outer layer wedding kimono) as a normal kimono. And why is she wearing oshiroi for no reason? Not to be rude but this is reeeeally off from what an actual kimono sensei would teach.

I believe this woman is a maiko, an apprentice of a geisha. Since she wears a colorful furisode and a fancier kanzashi.

Wwwwwhaaaaat is this‽‽ NO NO NO!!
YOU ARENT DONE WITH THE DATEJIME!
YOU ARE MISSING THE OBI AND ALL THE OBI PARTS LIKE THE MAKURA, OBIAGE, OBIJIMO...
I hope there is another video about the obi... Cause that is so uncomplete. Also furisode are typically for unmarried women.

Kimono was introduced to Japenise by Korean monk as funeral clothing in plain tan material color which Japenise copied it to make it into their own clothing with coloring because they had none.

Lol I’ve been wearing kimono every day for years now and this is a very bad video. It’s missing MANY steps and it’s just not well done at all. No one take this video seriously. There’s much better ones online than this.
