It's been 10-12 years, this is the real shit. crazy how you listen to so many songs over your lifetime, some on repeat... then theres bands like defeater, that you'll not listen to for a decade, but find yourself right back where it all fucken started. That's what the internet should be for.
Caught em a few times, most recently at gilman last year and he always delivers live, like listening to the album, i just have to stand there and admire how good these guys continue to be!
man, the guitar is what makes this song for me, the tone is veryyyyy atypical for this kind of music. No distortion at all until a little bit at the end (but even still there isn't much), very unusual and interesting in this case, especially considering the contrast with the harsh, fast, and heavy vocals and drum parts throughout.

I remember seeing these guys for the first time when they were on tour with ABR in Dallas. Never listened to them before and didnt know their music at all. But I was blown away by the passion of this band. Cheers dudes.

Were there're stage was set up at warped in my city. The scene kids was on the other side of this large parking lot listing to their butt lord andy six play. And defeater had a nice crowd. Many people who never heard of them was confused, the front crowd was screaming their lungs out as soon they played red, white, and blue. haha it was such a great time! Defeater killed it.
It's definitely talking about a place exactly like that. Since they've toured England before they may have been there, but intentional or not that place you described is exactly the setting for this record. Post WWII, industrial. I heard somewhere that it's set in New Jersey, but I always assumed it was Massachusetts because that's where they're from and being from Massachusetts myself, I've always pictured scenery like in the port town of Salem, MA.
I have a local pub type bar i go to every friday and i refer to it as the copper coin, and i wish more people would realize why and how amazing the reference is.
loved this video, this album is amazing. I actually liked leaving all of it to imagination though. I saw the copper coin much different, and there interaction more romantic than sleazy like it showed maybe.
I unfortunately ignored Defeater for awhile because I associated them with Bridge Nine. Don't get me wrong, the label has a lot of solid recordings, but at the same time I feel like it's become the McDonald's of hardcore at times. Regardless, I really enjoy this. Haven't gotten too much information on the concept. From what I gather it sounds like it surrounds the experiences associated with World War II era Jersey Shore communities.
So, anyone who likes these guys should definitely go check out this upcoming band called Being As an ocean. Amazing musicians, great music, awesome dudes. Get at it. Also, this song is amazing, as is the entire discography really.
Because Oliver Sykes the lead singer during the early 2010’s had a sound that sSORT of resembled this single in a coupe of his songs. But yeah the bands belong to entirely different sub genres
even if you dislike the hardcore genre (which I despised a few years ago), you can't say that this band doesn't have some of the most emotion filled songs

The drums are so fucking solid on this whole album. Perfect tone, some of the best beats and tightest fills I've ever heard.
Its hard to find a band to tell a story quite like Defeater. Their work is immaculate.

The story is universal so I think they may have left it ambiguous on purpose so that we could all kind of picture our hometowns, you know?
