- This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL.
Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers.
This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum.
The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up.

I think Angry Bruce is gonna be my new favorite character 😂 also Lick it Up is my favorite non makeup album. It’s the first cassette I bought with my own money.

KISS nerds like myself... How different would we feel about all the non-makeup albums the band released if they never took the makeup off??? Same lineups, same songs...

Interesting point about Lick It Up not having outside writers. I often don't want to give Joyce credit for much, because left to his own devices, he'd be riding on a tank through every town in the US shredding on his guitar at full volume.
There is one curious thing about this album, though. What needs to be licked up?
Guys, you should know better than to trust Wikipedia. There is no “instrumental” credited to the whole band as the final track to “MfT Elder”. The album ends with spoken words over the melody from “Just A Boy”, written by Stanley & Ezrin.
I’m only mentioning this so there is no misinformation. Regardless of that, love your podcast 👍
This album should of had 4 singles. A million to one as the third...and Exciter as the fourth

I read somewhere they used a mannequin for Vinnie and photo shopped his head on it,if you notice it has no arms, have you heard of this? Wondering what track you would pick for the 3rd video if there was one
some kiss tart comes up to me while im minding my own affairs listing to s.i.ol and he says what be this and why they gotta diss ace like that i say hey man thats tom and zeus there cool they are the breeze !!!!
This was released back when i thought Ace was a chick.
