I love the way the light and shade plays over the hills and valleys as often observed in most hilly regions. As far as my memory goes and my childhood visits to this area with my father when he used to either play or act as a referee in football matches this was a much smaller village than what it is now.
My mother's uncle used to share exciting stories of his days in the hills when the Hill Cart Road used to be an unpaved road and transversed on horseback. The horses used to be fed and watered at the numerous streams on the way from Siliguri to Darjeeling and the rider had to change horses at these places.
Good to know information - Belar was not named Beltar originally. It was named Bell Tower as there was a bell tower here from British times and the bell used to be rung for the workers to start work at the tea garden, lunch break, end of the day and for emergencies like fires, air raids during the World War, etc. I was also shown the place where the bell tower used to be located and it was all in ruins. Wonder if the ruins are still there.
Kurseong and its surrounding hills is what I call home and though there are multiple reasons however, I guess it is more because 3 generations, on my maternal side, were born and lived here. My mother was born here and so was I. As I get older the magnetism of my birthplace grows within me.
One thing I got to know from your video is that Gorkhas have flower gardens around their houses. My house in Monteviot Road was a cottage surrounded by flowers which my mother and I planted. I guess though I am from a Bengali family, one of the oldest of Kurseong, I am as much a Gorkha at heart than anyone else. :)
