Great video. Love the way you put it across. I no longer play golf but I do play bowls and I struggle to send my woods across a heavy green, so I need to try effortless power albeit with only one hand.
Thank you. 🙏 Grip size is personal and I have tried to analyze if there is any proof that it actually effect how we hit the ball but I can't find any real proof. Find what you like. I have a variety of grips and they all work, small to oversize.
"I know what I'm doing"...delivered in the same manner as Arnie's "I'll be back".......love it....and the tee height....do you have a video explaining the reason....? I 'm hooked on you lessons...no pun intended 😊
I love the idea that hips are not the focus of your swing. A huge part of brain that controls motor functions is devoted to the hands. Makes sense the hands and arms ARE the golf swing.
I was on the range today hitting balls. The guy next to me was younger than me. He was hitting the ball a hundred yards farther than I was. I was swinging as hard as I could, but the ball was still going nowhere.... There is more to it than what you say. You MUST be stronger, and able to move the club faster. Power doesn't come from nothing.
Nobody thinks it comes from nothing. Of course we need to move the club. What I want to teach you is to move the club and not everything. Effortless is not without effort but it's efficient and smart.
At 4.38 you talk about "pushing of the trail arm". Very very interesting as I've never seen that before from any teacher. Can you explain and maybe a video as that seems very important & different.
My new pro got me with just the body the arms are just carriers, my last pro got me to learn, body disassociation , which means, learn to give control to the torso going back, and then switch and give control to the lower body, a la Ben hogan, I have master both systems my arms are never activated, do I play good, yes and no, because at some point my arms want to, get involved and needles to say, is a battle of which part of the body takes over. This makes lots of sense I will give it a try today
After three weeks, Marcus, I am having pretty good results. Sometimes, I get a weak, chicken wing swing, but I think that happens when I use too much of my hands/arms and not legs/rotation for some reason. Thanks for all your instructions!
First time watching your channel and must say I was so impressed with your rudimentary style of teaching. I'm 60 been golfing for 3 years! I'm a natural lefty but, due to my tendency of having a very strong grip and hooking most shots my teaching partner had me switch to right handed where I had a much more natural grip although not much power! I noticed you have a rather strong grip so I'm assuming that is not an issue? Your explanation of how the hands work now make me want to go back to left side and employ your teachings! Thanks for making things easy to understand!
Hi John. Welcome to my channel. Most viewers call my grip weak but that's okey. I square up my club with my release not a twist. If you go through my "how to use your hands" series you will have the answers you are looking for. Start here: ruclips.net/video/JYJrkN991ac/видео.html
Marcus, hello. I am a new subscriber anxious to learn. I have only watched my first 2 videos just now. To start the swing, what is the sensation or feeling. Are you simply turning back in a traditional sense? Or is the feel that you are pulling the club back with the trail hand? Thanks!
Welcome. To me and most of the students that learn this, the feeling is the circle and not the straight line to the ball. I feel that the club starts back and down from the top before my body moves to much. Have you seen this: ruclips.net/video/N1HrX4C5aWk/видео.htmlsi=PSmjQZvVEGnRPhBB
good day Marcus, just discovered your channel. 69 yr old here with a 3 index, but can't hit driver more than low 230 yard carry. (although very straight). Tough to know how to gain effortless power by watching vs feeling. ( I play hockey and have a decent snap/slap shot). Would you compare the feeling to whipping a towel and making it crack?
I am NOT left handed, I just play golf that way. Tiger, Hogan, Snead and a lot of legends are left handed playing as a right handed. You are probably doing it correct. 👍
Great video Marcus! I saw a Paddy Harrington video and he stated most of the speed comes from the hands & arms! Any drills to slow that left arm & hand down?
Hi Marcus, I have been following your swing method for the past few weeks and getting some great results. As far as the driver goes, I setup just right of the center of the tee box with an open stance, shoulder parallel to the target, open club face, and the ball right of the hip joint. Most of my tee shots are found at the left edge of fairway instead of at the middle of the fairway. Is my stance too open or am I closing the club face too much or do I need to move closer to the right tee box (looking at the target). Your insight is much appreciated.
@@orkayen Then it is mostly the path of the club. You probably swing to much in to in instead of in to out and up. Making the club move up on the outside of your hands will probably solve your problems. Watch this: ruclips.net/video/Ruapl1cjTk8/видео.htmlsi=mOugmzMS-1R2s-Gx
Marcus your explanation of hand speed with the overtaking of the trail over lead hands makes sense. However that is easier to do if the downswing is not rushed but controlled. I find trying to slow the swing and body movement down extremely hard to do, can you give any advice or drills to slow body motion down.
Hi Mick. The motion is a relationship between your hands. We don't need to tell our body to slow down but we need to tell one hand to move slow and one fast. I did this a few weeks ago with drills: ruclips.net/video/D-Qn4XaGf2c/видео.htmlsi=SeVJt0uH3w7QEcz5
I need to try this effortless power...it's in your hands...loving your videos Marcus. Presumably it's all in the timing of your release? Too early or too late will result in destructive shots.
Good video, thanks. Are you right handed but play left as an old hockeyplayer like me? Using @TheStack I find my left (trailing) hand much slower than my right. Do you need to train speed of your trail hand if slower? Your thoughts? Greeetings from 🇳🇴
It's the difference in speed that gives us swing speed. I'm right-handed and I can slow down my lead arm and that makes the difference between the hands bigger. That's why it looks like I'm swinging slow, I'm not fast in my lead side. Train your hands to create more speed together and you will be fine.
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad I am a lefty indeed. Lefties unite! I tend to hit a slice or a fade, perhaps if I get more of my left arm and hand pushing vs. the right pulling, I'll be able to get more of a draw incorporated into my game. I would love to be more consistent off the tee. When I hit fairways, I score fairly well - my last 9 being a 38 on a par 35 9 hole course.
Hi Jim. We need to pass without twisting the club around its shaft. I notice your trail elbow does not stay under your armpit like a Hogan swing, but you pull it straight back (so you can push it forward hard and hit the ball)
I love your videos... can i ask are you naturally left handed? I am left handed but play right handed (which is quite common). I feel left hand dominant and think that this maybe affects my release. Second question (i am being greedy). I am slightly confused about the trail hand speed/release and if it comes before contact does this not affect compression with irons? Does it not lead to scooping of the ball?
Firstly, yes I am right handed playing left. Very common in some countries that play hockey in the winter. Secondly. It's all about returning with speed to the position the club started at. If you have som shaft lean forward at set up, you will get that at impact. The scoop start after impact with irons and before impact with a driver. Not greedy. If we want answers, we need to ask. 👍
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad Thank you ... that makes a lot of sense. Your videos are so good... not enough talk about hand speed! Recently watched one of Padraig Harrington's videos and he really emphasises the importance of speed and release also! Keep up the good work!
Big fan, Marcus! I enjoy your way of teaching and personality. I am making progress. I have a simple question, which I guess, I could watch and figure out, but I'll just ask. Are you conscious, at all, about your right elbow staying closer to your side or do you just let it go where it "naturally" goes? Also, I'd like to support your teaching financially in some way. Is there a link to do that? Your concepts are meaningful to me and I want to show proper respect.
Hi Derek. I'm glad you find my channel valuable. In my swing I don't need to feel my elbow, I only need to find a pushing motion with my trail hand. That will place my elbow more on the side of my body and hopefully never in front where it will be pulling instead. There is always "Super Thanks". You will find that "Thanks button" in the meny under every video. I'm happy for all financial help. Thanks. 🙏
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad Another question, please sir! Still loving your swing thoughts and have one more thing to figure out. Starting my downswing, the way you suggest, has eliminated all slicing from my game. Yippee. My question now is how fast you go with the initial move. Do you start your powerful move from the top or let it flow for a split second and gain speed nearer the ball, if that make sense? Thank you.
Hello Marcus. Is this move basically like literally throwing the club towards your target. The body/brain connection seems to understand this move and it really requires no thought as we have all thrown rocks at targets since we were little kids.
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad hi, great video. When you say you try to get people to throw cross the target line it’s not too clear to me. Do you mean throw across the target line to the right (right hand golfer) and release the hands which squares the club face..thanks
Marcus when you said hitting a 300 yard drive was effortless I know your talking to all age groups but and I don’t mean this in a negative or sarcastic way but what about us older swingers of the golf club I’m training and playing with all your suggestions and I like them all for many reasons but… I’m not hitting 300 yard drives I’m 71 years old and in good health and condition but that longer drives haven’t found me as of yet Do I need to strength train with some weights What do you think 👍⛳️👍
I don't know your training history but 300 yards will most definitely need some other practice than golf. I have a healthy 77 year old friend who wanted 30 more yards to get to 300 and it took 1 year of both swing and weight training. Today he can easily do 30 push ups and he moves like a 30 year old. He started Kite surfing last summer. 😊
@@bayougolf7524 Train your whole body with some extra on the pushing muscles in your chest, shoulders and arms. If you wanna save time supersets are good but I don't think they make us stronger than a normal set. Maybe it is time to find a real gym I can film in and do some videos on the subject.
Great video. As an older golfer, I relate to the need for a way to hit the ball well without needing to put more effort into it. I have had some success with your swing suggestion - but have a terrible time with hooking - push hooking- the ball. Any simple recommendations? - Thanks!
Hi Maureen. I tried the straight arm technic but I loose speed and impact so I went back to what works for me. Watch this: ruclips.net/video/naUkRgytBW0/видео.htmlsi=evVZKBf5IZhTVS8H
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad I’m definitely trying it… in my basement. Winter now ! I notice my golf partners who have the longest drives have the biggest back swing.
Hi. The ball will tell you. We can't all do the same because we all have different grips and arm speed. If you have a slice you are very late and need to do it earlier. I think this video will clear this up a bit better: ruclips.net/video/FelhqwRacfc/видео.htmlsi=O1c4Hrg_hoqa54D1
I can hit my driver as you say mostly effortless with loose arms and good rotation. However, I cannot seem to get the trajectory up where it was when I was hitting it probably 30 yards further. I don't slice my drives and more instead most drives are straight or left for a right handed swing. I guess somehow I am not using enough tilt or am actually hitting down. Any ideas?
Your club is not hitting up enough and the reason is that your release is late. Watch this about finding the low point: ruclips.net/video/YQicyxSJjTA/видео.htmlsi=NWAjgn70AwxvLonV
Hi Marcus.....going out to play tomorrow. Have been practicing hitting in to out focusing on my right elbow......what thought should I bring to the course...... thanks
Just over do it on the course. When we change something we need to take the practise to the golf course and it’s hard not to go back to the ”normal”. Good luck.
Hi Bill. I don't think so. The hard part is that it is not the same with a short or a long club. We need to remember to close it more and earlier when we use a driver.
Putting too much effort into a shot usually causes the hips to drive too early, and it leaves the arms trailing when they are not ready to come down yet, and they become disconnected from the rest of what the body is doing, thus they produce less speed when they come down and come through in a bad direction.
The swing happens so fast if I think about releasing while swinging it really throws me off. I know I am not releasing the club any drills that would help?
Ok...The explanation is very good. Question. Are you physically pushing the handle of the club or are you letting the momentum of the club just take off and square itself??? I feel that bringing my hands down (swing down) brings the shaft parallel to the deck. Once their the club can either take off by itself or i can attempt to push it through. There is a lot of momentum at that point and I feel like i am almost slowing the club head down by trying to manipulate the push.
I am pushing physically on every shot. My hands are pushing towards each other and helping the natural momenturn of the club. There are many ways you can hit a golf shot, find your best way. 👍
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad I am trying so hard to understand this. I believe you said that the trail hand wants to cross over the lead arm. Seems as though there is such a fine line between a “roll release” (which I know you are not trying to promote) and your “trail hand over left arm”. I am earnestly trying to understand the movement.....thank you
Hi Marcus, I notice that you bend your front elbow on the takeaway ala Harry Vardon. Is that a conscious part of your swing or something you don't realize that you do? Liked your presentation.
Hi. I don't think of it as bent or straight, more relaxed or stiff. Anything we try to keep straight will cost energy. Energy we can use to accelerate the club. I've tested the straight arm but it cost to much without any benefits that I could feel or measure, only lower swing speed.
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad The English language and golf have driven me crazy. Worthless, colorless, tasteless, weightless, cashless, faultless etc. All absolutes. Effortless seems to have no definable value. Seems all golf instructors love to use it. When Mike Austin hit his 515 yd. drive he said it felt "effortless". There in lies the problem. Effortless for Popeye, impossible for Olive Oil. I would like to hear an instructor say " I can show you how to swing so much more efficiently that you will be walking so long to get to your next shot, you can eat a sandwich like John Rahm on the way ", or something as silly but quantifiable.
@@squareswing I can agree on some of your thoughts. Effortless for me is important because I want people to understand that the big effort it takes to rotate is not what's gonna make the club go faster. Using a few muscle at full effort is necessary but not all at the same time. Most of the golfers I meet need to rotate slower (less effort) to be able to hit the driver correct. It could be a fun video to make and point out what I did to you that effortless is not without effort.
I lift weights three times a week, but only hit my 9 iron 110 yards (for example). My brother says I need to try to smash the ball, but I let gravity work the club and I know my distances. Therefore, I am a 90’s golfer. Only been playing a year and a half.
Strength and speed are two different animals. We need some strength but moving fast is a different feeling. I get it from feeling one slow hand and on fast hand. Watch this: ruclips.net/video/9cXxQ2r15CY/видео.html
Hi Marcus, seek your advice and clarification. In the downswing, do you push forward with your trail hand or elbow? Second clarification, in the downswing, while pushing forward with the trail arm, do you let the lead arm maintain the same position, from the top of the backswing , that is, it remains across the chest, or does the lead arm move independent of the body?
Pushing happens when you straighten your arm. The hand itself can not push. Both arms are working independent of your body turn. That is the goal. We want to able to create more speed without having to rotate faster.
Marcus, can you give me some clarity. There are three ways I can swing, one with my trail hand, two, using my trail elbow and three, using my trail triceps . Which in your opinion, would be the best, I follow? Thanks.
@@cooljakes To extend your arm in the correct way you need to use your chest, triceps and wrist in the correct order. Try to feel how you make a underhande throw and put that feeling in to your golf swing.

@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad brilliant great man...thanks
Can you do a video showing your trail shoulder and arm. I'm having a hard time understanding the mechanics of what you refer to as push.
I'll put that on the list of ideas. 👍
Prayers brother!!
I love the idea that hips are not the focus of your swing. A huge part of brain that controls motor functions is devoted to the hands. Makes sense the hands and arms ARE the golf swing.
Every tool we use in our life involve our hands. Golf is a craft. Thanks for the comment. 👍
Great video! Thank you!!
Marcus , Excellent Analysis and Instruction!!!!
Thanks. 👍
At 4.38 you talk about "pushing of the trail arm". Very very interesting as I've never seen that before from any teacher.
Can you explain and maybe a video as that seems very important & different.
I will get back to that in every driver video I make. If you look at my video about the release you will get it in more detail. Ok?
My new pro got me with just the body the arms are just carriers, my last pro got me to learn, body disassociation , which means, learn to give control to the torso going back, and then switch and give control to the lower body, a la Ben hogan, I have master both systems my arms are never activated, do I play good, yes and no, because at some point my arms want to, get involved and needles to say, is a battle of which part of the body takes over.
This makes lots of sense I will give it a try today
Just try to find what works for you. NOBODY is using only body or only arms, it's always a mix. I like more arms. 👍
so great a lesson, priceless!
Glad it was helpful!😊
After three weeks, Marcus, I am having pretty good results. Sometimes, I get a weak, chicken wing swing, but I think that happens when I use too much of my hands/arms and not legs/rotation for some reason. Thanks for all your instructions!
Thanks Brother Derek. Keep going and try to release that lead arm. 👍
Excellent...Seems to work nicely for senior golfers like us...Can you explain how to square the club head consistently... Thanks 😊
Hi Rabi. This is one of the videos on the subject but there will be more in the future: ruclips.net/video/VIDfsgztt2U/видео.html

Have you seen this:

good day Marcus, just discovered your channel.
For me it feels a lot smother than that. No real crack. More like a long acceleration. More slap shot than wrist snap. 👍
Excellent vid Marcus, so as a lefty like you I am wrong playing as a
right player? I think my skillfull hand is my left...

How does the ball start? Left, straight or right?
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad I did watch this week and it is straight most of the flight and moves left towards the end.
@@orkayen Then it is mostly the path of the club. You probably swing to much in to in instead of in to out and up. Making the club move up on the outside of your hands will probably solve your problems.

I did this a few weeks ago with drills:

I need to try this effortless power...it's in your hands...loving your videos Marcus. Presumably it's all in the timing of your release? Too early or too late will result in destructive shots.
Timing is sadly always important.
I grew up playing baseball and hockey. I think I need to incorporate more "hockey" in to my left arm/hand and less baseball in my right hand!
Sounds like a good plan if you are a lefty. 👍
How do you keep the club face square at impact by letting the trail arm pass the lead arm
Hi Jim. We need to pass without twisting the club around its shaft. Watch this series and you will understand:

Part 3 is about the control of the face and where the release ends up.
Are you using baseball grip ?
No, just a normal overlap. 👍
I notice your trail elbow does not stay under your armpit like a Hogan swing, but you pull it straight back (so you can push it forward hard and hit the ball)
Correct observation. Pull back and push forward. Hogan wanted a fade and I want a draw.
What size driver head do you prefer? Shaft? What irons do you prefer? Thanks.
I'm in love with my old 440cc Callaway heads. Shaft is normally regular. Irons I prefer Mizuno or Callaway Muscle Back type of irons.
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad Thanks for the feedback.
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad P.S. Do you prefer any particular driver lofts?
Do you fell your right palm is going towards the ground for right hand golfer
First down and then up after impact. Never turned down through the ball.

Hi Carlos. I agree, it is a move that most people can do but I don't throw to the target, I try to get most golfers to throw cross the target line. 👍
@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad hi, great video. When you say you try to get people to throw cross the target line it’s not too clear to me. Do you mean throw across the target line to the right (right hand golfer) and release the hands which squares the club face..thanks

@@GolfwithMarcusEdblad I’m definitely trying it… in my basement. Winter now ! I notice my golf partners who have the longest drives have the biggest back swing.
My question is WHEN does the trail hand pass the lead hand?
Hi. The ball will tell you. We can't all do the same because we all have different grips and arm speed. If you have a slice you are very late and need to do it earlier. I think this video will clear this up a bit better:

I can hit my driver as you say mostly effortless with loose arms and good rotation. However, I cannot seem to get the trajectory up where it was when I was hitting it probably 30 yards further. is timing the closure of the face difficult?
Hi Bill. I don't think so. The hard part is that it is not the same with a short or a long club. We need to remember to close it more and earlier when we use a driver.
What’s your grip it looks like a baseball grip
A normal overlap, watch this: ruclips.net/video/gliVDjP_PMw/видео.htmlsi=5qEtFwLmbLjakryS
Putting too much effort into a shot usually causes the hips to drive too early, and it leaves the arms trailing when they are not ready to come down yet, and they become disconnected from the rest of what the body is doing, thus they produce less speed when they come down and come through in a bad direction.
Good thinking. 👍 We need smart effort not too much effort.
Interesting 🤔
It is if you try it. 👍
Super
👍
The swing happens so fast if I think about releasing while swinging it really throws me off. I know I am not releasing the club any drills that would help?
Start with a short club and hit short shots. It will give you the time you need to feel. Maybe even swing without hitting balls first.
Thanks for the reply I actually started doing that. I have a divot board and some plastic balls I can use in the house.
@@pamelamartini9030 Sounds like a goodplan. 👍

I keep dipping my right shoulder and hitting behind the ball? Suggestions?
Move your landing forward until you find the correct spot. Your shoulder will always dip a little.
I've got the effortless down, but I just fall down and lay there. How long do I have
wait for the power?
A long time if you don't start creating trail arm speed. It's effortless, not without effort...
Isn’t rolling of the hands inconsistent in golf? Thanks
It is. Thats why I want you to go toe up in your finish. Never turn over if you don’t want to hook it.
I lift weights three times a week, but only hit my 9 iron 110 yards (for example). My brother says I need to try to smash the ball, but I let gravity work the club and I know my distances. Therefore, I am a 90’s golfer. Only been playing a year and a half.

Like in a karate punch, you pull back with your hand and punch, again with your hand, not with the elbow or triceps. Please enlighten.
@@cooljakes In a punch your hand is punching but your arm are doing all the work and that you can bring to your golf swing.
