    I am Greek, I don't I understand what long Greek lunch means. If you mean that you sit on a table and you order food and eat it at your own pace and then reorder and eat more and so and so forth , well that's basically every lunch in a greek taverna.

      @karinandhenward  Год назад

      Probably, we were just being dramatic. Many places around the world rush you out of their restaurant to turn over the tables faster.

    Cinnamon in tomato sauce is common in Greek cooking and nutmeg in the bechamel is also traditional
    I'm my family Moussaka was always potatoes and eggplant with the meat sauce the potatoes being the base layer and either kasseri or graviera ( whichever was available) to make the bechamel
    Also Moussaka is more like eggplant parmigiana
    There is another Greek dish called Pastitsio that is a baked pasta with meat and cheese that would be a better comparison to Italian lasagna

      We did try the Pastitsio while in Athens and it was delicious. Really enjoyed having these dishes with different spices in them, yum!

    Some additional informations for you:
    - To make moussaka you need to fry both the potatoes and the eggplant before you use them.
    - Some (not many) use in their Greek salad yogurt instead of feta cheese. I tried it and loved it.
    - This type of halva is made with basically semolina, olive oil and cinnamon and some sesame. It's a very light and very quick dessert most Greeks love. But, you can also add whatever you think goes with these. We usually add walnuts (inside and/or on top), and you can also add dried figs or any kind of dried fruit of your choise (Keyword: dried). After adding all these though *you practically have a supefood.* The version you had was the simplest one.
    - There're many traditional recipies in Greece, many kinds of seefood too, you would be amazed. If you like seafood, this country can offer you a huge variety. You just need to ask around, dig a little deeper.
    Regards

      We would like to come back one day again and definitely deep dive. Greeks really know how to make delicious food. The nuts over there are so nice, it's almost impossible to find nuts like that here in NZ - it's almost always stale unless you buy a huge bag direct from the farm. Interesting about the yoghurt instead of feta cheese. Thanks for sharing your food knowledge with us!

      @@karinandhenward I can only tell you this and please dont get me wrong: if we speak of traditional cuisine, think of the Italian, now think of the French traditional cuisine; now put these together and they cannot match the diversity of the Greek traditional cuisine. We're talking a huge number of recipies. Also, the vegetables in Greece are in both quality and taste multiple levels above the ones produced in the previously mentioned countries. If we are talking about seafood, 1 out of two seafood being sold in Italy it is Greek. And if we talk of olive oil, about 70% of the top quality Italian Olive Oil is actually either Greek or from Spain. This beame a huge thing within the EU which forced the Italian companies to actually determine where the oil they until recently sold as "Italian" comes from (and they still dont do it - not all of them at least). Experts on this field suggest that the Greek olive oil (which is by 90% extra virgin - Greece is the biggest producer of extra virging olive oil globally - note: Greece is not the biggest producer of olive oil generally, but of the highest quality) is the next big thing, not because of the quantity, but bcoz of the quality.
      Regards

    You are right, there is no bellpeppers in a greek sallad but threre can be some variations. In some places in the northern part of greece you can even get it with boiled egg. 🙂

      Green bell pepper is a mandatory ingredient in any horiatiki Greek salad. And it has to be green. Can't do without.
