Really one of the best sounding synths ! This is a MAJOR addition to the V collection.
This thing is pure joy. Never touched a real DX7 myself, but my ears absorbed most of its sounds throughout the years. This is even better! You can USE it, I only heard how programming was next to impossible on a real thing.
I had a DX100 .. what a nightmare.. but then again I was a kid, everything was a nightmare.
@@norakat haha i rather thought everything is a fairytale when you’re a kid:)
the only problem with the Arturia DX7V is that it sounds better than the original. i owned the DX7, and it’s a 12bit machine. the Arturia uses modern full resolution, and it is glorious.
I feel that the original DX sounds richer. It could be the software effects used for the plugin.
Not sure but I think you can set the bit depth
This is what the Montage should have been like, great job Arturia!
you think you can compare it to Montage? not sure..then u didnt heard Montage in fact.
I'm installing it now, but it sounds dope. i was impressed with pretty much every sound I heard. I bought this and Serum. I'm going to hit this next beat with a combo from both plugins. Time to get to work.
I remember back in the 1980’s the DX7 was definitely the king.
actually this is the highlight of the V6 release, and those that say FM8 is the same, not even. this sounds like the original DX or i would say it's even better because of the detailed control you have here. i just wish they would have a better price for previous customers. 200 a year to update starts to get steep. with the new ableton coming out im going to have to hold off i think. also have to see what NI is up to with K12.
Just bought full 6500 presets of analog lab 4. ;) I was considering unlocking just this synth.
Sweet video! Thanks for the upload. Take care, Sam.
3:51 The original DX7 could only do a sine wave.
More importantly though: Try Dexed first. It's compatible with existing DX7 sound banks. And... it's for free.
I have both. Dexed is a musthave, and its more light on CPU than DX7 V. On the other hand DX7 V does whole lot more than Dexed, plus its more user friendly.
It is one of the best synth in the whole collection, really convincing. Arturia additions are really cool, better way to create/modify sounds (try to create a sound on a real DX7 with the tiny display !), some good effects ("synths love effects" rule !), and it sounds good (most important). The CMI is really interesting too for those who are nostalgic, else, like the Synclavier, this was just transient technologies. But you have to try the Buchla Easel, that's real fun !
the DX reminds me of the Synclavier ... we just need the sampling for the Synclavier
Arturia did it on the new CMI, so I suppose they can add the same thing to the Synclavier. But the lack of resynthesis on the Synclavier is a shame it was one of the major feature of the real instrument.
You're right, the DX is a bit the "child" of the Synclavier. FM was present in the latter and was part of its specific sound. The DX is just a "modern" (for that times) Synclavier costing one month of salary of a mean executive against $200.000 ( lot of money in 80's !). The DX7 is a Synclavier focused only on the FM part (with the addition of "algorithms").
This was the "new" sound of that times, something you can find also in the PPG Wave, even if the technology was very different (wave tables for the PPG). Or Even the Sequential VS (that has a less glorious career than its brother the Prophet 5).
Today FM is coming back, people forgot that we stopped using FM synths because this sound was considered as cheap ! And when you browse original DX7 presets (Arturia DX7 allows to import original Sysex) you know why we stopped to use it :-) Apart a few sounds they all sound the same and cheap.
But a bit of the best presets of the DX7 in a track can be cool. It's all about the right blend !
They've added resynthesis now
Yamaha DX7 only had 1 waveform type - sine wave
yamaha Tx81z (4 operator) had 8 waves
this emu has many more wave types
Dx synths had NO filter as such
this emu has a filter
DX7 had no fx
this has many fx
editing a DX synth was a nightmare of 1 parameter at a time in a tiny window...just words and numbers
this is graphical with env graphics etc.
it's pretty spot on in comparison when loading same FM patches
arturia extend it's capabilities
Supra Nice , Thumbnail made me think it was hardware for a sec 😕
72ndHUMAN Cause hardware must be better right?? 🙃
What is the preset for making those keyboard sounds of the early 80's?
fun fact : it was used in some of fnf vanilla songs like fresh, tutorial, game over, gettin freaky and so on
One cool feature that I'm not sure was mentioned in this video is the ability to import actual DX7 SysEx patches, which there are thousands(?) of, freely and legally downloadable online.
Really? Can someone confirm this?

Just replying to my own comment here. ESW *did* say you can import original DX7 patches at the beginning of the video. I must have dozed off for 1.5 seconds there.
Digital Droo Dexed can do this...and it's free
I know. It never occurred to me to mention that here.
I was almost considering getting a DX7 just for that jungle bass but this plugin seems like the way to go.
Looks more chill to use then the original ho ass machine.
steppa money My God you are in this comment section as well?! You really must hate the DX7, don't you.
Felipe Keisinger im not a fan of fm synthesis programming. There are better ways more based around common knowledge to achieve the sounds you can make in a dx7.
Never seen anyone call a synth keyboard a ho lol
Sounds great!
Been waiting for this one, but unfortunately it's very expensive and the only synth sound worth anything to me is the [Rom1A 11-E.PIANO 1] sound, great electric piano sound, had to tweek it though, DX7 by Arturia's got FX like Phaser, Flanger, Analog Chorus, Reverb, EQ, etc..etc..which is a plus.. But why isn't there just a plain piano sound? Educate me, I've never owned an actual DX7 keyboard.
wow, nice sounds as for emulation:")
Hello ADSR! Can you give a advice, what midi controller need for comfortoble work with so many many parametrs, i think NI with only 8 knob's not enought!
Hello, nobody tried to load the sysex preset “St. Helmo’s fire” if it sounds like real DX7?
Is the operator matrix customizable, or just different algo presets? Is there a way to import waveforms? Just seems like a fm8 downgrade. GUI looks nice, but no freely customizable operator matrix, and lack of waveforms is probably going to be deal killer for most FM\PM lovers. I just wish someone would smash FM8 and Sytrus together and stick a Serum or Avenger like interface on it.
Brandon Rhoades why not just appreciate the synth for what it is, not what it isn't?
EPYX __ Really? Because it is a product. You buy it for what it has. If another product offers more, you are going to buy the other product.
Brandon Rhoades FM8 is a very unintuitive GUI...it was a chore to do basic things like muting operators. You'd have to go into the matrix to do this.
The way it handled sysex import was messy and they didn't translate well....they sound much more accurate in Dexed.
Lastly, one global operator pitch and filter.
The envelopes look MUCH better to work with in DX7 V
Then lastly, the price. $99 to $199 is a no brainier here.
First look at CMI V?
was up till 5 AM doing it, uploading today :) That was my personal fav of the new additions to the v collection
ADSR Music Production Tutorials planning on buying it
Is it Mac compatible?
Yes
Right? Right!
Is there no phase retrigger button on this vst?
Each operators have an phase retrig switch
Matthieu Courouble where? I didn't see it on the vst or in the manual. Are you taking about sync? Is that the same thing?
yep, in the DX7 realm the term "OSC SYNC" is used but this actually corresponds to phase retrig on each note. So it's more like "My oscillator starts in sync with each key press" rather than the OSC Sync from the analog synthesis realm :)
victor morello hahaha okay thanks so much for clearing that up. They could have said that in the manual sheesh
You're welcome ! :) I just checked and it's explained in page 56
"6.3.5. Osc Sync
An operator can run freely or force its waveform to start from the beginning when it is used
by a new voice.
Click the button to toggle Osc Sync on and off. When this button is lit, Osc Sync is activate
for this operator."
Maybe it could be mentioned that this is the equivalent of Phase Retrig though
Modulation wheel is on 70% at all time))))
damn... some Stranger Things vibes in those presets...
Actually, the soundtrack is analogue synths, no DX7. There's a good Sound on Sound interview...search "scoring stranger things".
The DX7 is digital.
FM synthesis is almost impossible in analog way at this level. DX7 is digital, 14 bits of dynamic range.
DX7 isn't even technically FM synthesis. It's phase modulation synthesis - it achieves the same means, but provides a cleaner, more musical result.
You can technically do FM with any analogue synth, but will always sound different to what is expected from the likes of a DX7. You can get close if you use thru-zero oscillators, but they're tricky to use and are never really seen outside modular synths.
Fenrir the Rrowdy Yeah.
Also, I heard here some sounds that sound a lot like the Yamaha CS-80. That brass pad, whatever it was called, was just so Blade Runner...
Bro... go to bed... it’s 4 in the morning...
Any idea how to get percussive beefy bass tone?
That's probably the Solid/Lately preset
Хорошее демо👍🏼
ay ?
No continuous pitch knob per oscillator. It's only in steps :(
Can't you map pitch to a knob or envelope?
What's it like compared to Native Instruments old FM7?
Dexed!
Nah!
a comparison with fm8 would be fun
FM8 is better
Александр RU78 did you compare it ?
Yes....with FM 8 and I get the tones I need much faster...FM 8 sounds much better, given that he appeared in the 2006...if you write a drum&bass or dubstep then you will understand me.
Александр RU78 interestintg...for two reasons .
Firstly because I find fm8 shitty sounding ,and the real dx7 really nice sounding and this dx7 vst seems to sound alike .thanks for the info.
Have you tried loading dx7 patches on both?
There is one thing.....if you create shitty sound...it will be shitty.....I don't use patches....only create own sounds....and I understand the sound of a particular synth in various stages of creating his own sound...FM synthesis is not for those who use ready-made patches....if you listen to the patches of synths to compare their sound..it is not an objective comparison....
This reminds me so much of Fart Boys meets the butt dragons
I have a DX7. And Dexed. I programmed presets for the Reface DX. This is cool and all...sounds great, but...a DX7 is easy to find and not terribly expensive. Why not recreate a synth that IS expensive or just hard to maintain? Like a Polivoks, for example. They aren't obscenely expensive, but they aren't reliable. Just makes more sense, but I'm sure licensing and other factors play a part in Arturia's decisions.
tritonrecordings because the Polivoks filter is insanely difficult to emulate. There is a thread going on at KVR about this. Urs from U-he has said he cannot even properly emulate the filter of the Polivoks.
I own a Polivoks and it's the one synth I'll probably never part with because it is so unique sounding.
I wish someone would emulate it so I could sell it.
Image-Line has a Polivoks emulation, but I wouldn't be able to tell you about the accuracy of it.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Pretty nice looking and really decently sounding VSTi. But when listening deep into sounds, its lacks bass (lowend) dynamics and sound charisma of real deal DX7. Thumbs up anyways. :)
DestroyER82 of course, you can pick up all those nuances in RUclips audio....did you listen over your phone too? Because that's the best listening environment for such agonizing details.
Kid, please, lower your horses. I do own DX7 in my studio and I have tested Arturia VST side by side with it. I was just curious about youtube reviews and feedback.
A real DX7 has no low end, unless you severely equalise it... Believe me: I speak from experience!
Well I got one sitting right next to me. Low notes can go to easily to A0 (27,5Hz). And DX7 for making basslines or lowend pads/drones is really strong because you actually dont need to equalise or compress at all.
where can i buy this? what is this synth usefol for music genres is this good for electronic music or pop?
Sorry arturia... Mandy look for serum synth or spire.. both really powerful
DX7 and other FM synths are generally not the easiest to start out with. Synth choice also won't define if you will sound like the the majority of dance producers, only you will.
Mandy Lane if you like the mid 80s and early 90s music made with a plug socket its for you.
If you like the dead dread bassline even more so.
goobyplsIW the envelope display make this a lot easier. Linear synthesis still pisses all over it. And pretty much anything else too.
its not sample based, thats cool
re engineered or what not
A Fine Demo...w ell do ne
Basically u can do everything in serum that u can do here
KMS nope, not even close ,totally different methods of synthesis
Yeah it's a lot different. I'm going to stick with serum though since it's more precise.
Lol!! Do your research bud... 🤣
NOT EVEN CLOSE..
Sometimes i don't understand how fat a person could be. One time i wrote "Fat People" in google and a really fat guy came up. I'm sad because of that.
Junk
Nah, never
sounds like crap
Bollocks does it. I've watched side by side tests. It's about as close as you can get to the original, then they added so many extra features
They allow 9 year olds in the comments section?!?
