The pain is normal yes. 3rd lobes are considered a mix of lobe/cartilage. Id just wait, and try dead stretching it in mm incriments (ik u said u dont mind tapers) but when it comes to your 3rd lobe, dead stretching will be the best option. (Ik you say you dont feel the cartilage right on the piercing site) but its considered a mix of both and cartilage hurts to stretch. This is what i reccomend, just dont treat it like a lobe basically. And if you want to continue using the taper you got, no problem. Just wait a bit longer. And try again, make sure it slides in like butter (but do expect tenderness) thats normal for stretching cartilage unlike lobes. So tip for anyone reading this comment and are currently stretching: lobes should NEVER feel tender during stretching. 3rd lobes are a mix! And cartilage: tenderness is normal, dont panic!

Tightness is normal not pain. Good rule of thumb.

I'd recommend doing half (or even quarter) sizes to size up. It sounds like the stretch might have been putting some pressure against your cartilage that your body was initially fine with, but something nudged or moved it enough to trigger your body to start reacting. Everything you described basically screams,"Too much, too soon." The further up the ear you go, the more you'll have to rely on cartilage stretching techniques which are a lot slower going than lobe stretching. The rule with cartilage stretching is that for anything you did with the lobe, do it 3xs as slow and 3xs as gentle for cartilage. Be prepared to throw 4-6 months at each and every size you stretch to before moving on to the next.
I HIGHLY recommend these types of plugs to stretch with instead of the tunnels you've been using. They're easy to insert and are slightly weighted to encourage hole enlargement (that's what she said. Sorry. I'm nine). The size differentials are also far more easy to work with for stubborn stretching. I wish they'd made these back in the days I apprenticed as a piercer because it would have made a lot of lives easier. FTR, you don't need to get these specific plugs from this specific site (hate to say it, but they sell these exact same plugs on Temu for a laughable fraction of this price), but this specific style of plug is often available in half sizes vs other kinds.

I had the same problem with my stretching, i couldn't touch, slepp on it, move, it was swollen and red (it hurts soooo much); after two or three days, without leaving the tunnel but only taking care of it with salin solution, the situation calm down, and now (after 1 month) it's totally fine.❤
Btw i really like you're videos, and this awesome playlist 💕

I believe you're right---the 8 was hitting a little bit of cart in that area of your ear. I had a similar issue with one of my stretches higher up on the lobe as well. I sucked it up, and dealt with it, even though it was unpleasant. Not a total fail though---at least you're still at the 10. Better than having to downsize to a 12 or 14. Try again at a later time. You'll get it. (Jan Griffiths).

It is normal. I have three as well. My top one is 00 gauge. My middle one is 1/2” and my lower one is 9/16. It took almost a year before my top one wasn’t sore anymore. It was right on the edge of the cartilage, just like yours, which I could see with the piercing removed.

The 3rd lobe and higher can be a little tricky because it's entering cartilage territory. I hope after it calms down you're able to stretch again and finally get it to a 6g. If not, and you're stuck at a 10g and don't like the look of the little tunnel (I think it looks pretty badass myself), you could replace it with multiple hinge rings. I did that with my 3rd lobes to give it a "different look" from my stretched 1st and 2nd lobes. I really like it! I think it might look bomb on you.
Not making it to your goal size is really frustrating though so I'm sorry. Hope it works out!

It sounds like what people call denting when stretching septums. I haven't experienced it yet but from what i understand is that it hurts until the cartalige starts to erode and make room for the bigger piercing.

Maybe try using a taper? Or tape on a 10 gauge piece, and stretching really slowly by adding more tape? I don't know. Just my 2 cents. (Jan Griffiths).

it’s always so interesting for me to see how people’s ears are built
she’s got three lobe stretches and the third one is almost pushing it
and i have 10 piercings in each lobe- and five sets of them are stretched, and i don’t have any cartilage piercings at all-
    just 20 lobe 😂

Update on the stretching: I tried again today and I think my earrings might be an 18g because I tried going up to a 14 and I still got some resistance. So I’m going to find some 16g earrings and go from there and if it still doesn’t work I will be absolutely devastated haha

  • @mel_k713

Idk, but I’d suggest going to your professional piercer to ask them. Since you did it on your own, that’s my guess. 😘 And, I love your nails!

I tried to stretch my third lope to a 14 and it didn’t like it. I’ve heard that the third lobe can act like a cartilage piercing cuz it’s right on the board of a lobe and cartilage. I gave up and left it at a 16G because it was too problematic.
