  • Here is an awesome level 2 encounter that you can drop into any dnd campaign. I liked the first video so much I decided to make a sequel. Can a level 2 party kill a skittering horror?

I can already hear the sound of my players trying to collect and sell the adamantine from the walls

Very good but I'm not too sure about the bomb set up. I have seen players miss the most clear hints. Keep making these! They are needed.

    I'll use this.
Thanks! You keep on making cool content and stuff like this just shows the party more ways than just violence.

Not bad, but not as good as the last one. It’s REALLY a good idea to always as the question “‘how did this happen?” If the answer is “‘I don’t know, I just decided to put that there because I needed the mechanic for the encounter” then this leads to issues because you have to force the knowledge on the party - as it’s not possible to work it out. This example is not too bad, but if you always try to think like this then everything works better and the party get to use their brains throughout a campaign. So here, why is the key in the mouth of the beast? Because I want them to have to kill the beast with a bomb, because that would be cool. Down side they may all die or feel you had all the agency. How about if the monster killed the priest after he locked the box and dragged him off to start eating him. The monster is not there are first, they see blood stains and a shoe (with or without severed foot - you know your table) leading away to the corridor on the left. It becomes clear that the box can not be removed and a key is needed. You pick the highest passive perception (no rolling as you need it to happen) and say in the darkness at the end of the corridor you see a glinting of metal, the colour reminds you of the metalwork on the box. As they go to investigate the monster emerges from its nest (the room at the end of the corridor) or a side tunnel dug in the corridor. It can not approach the party as it fears the light. Now we have a standoff. It will not TPK while they are in the light. But they need the key which is around the neck of a half eaten corpse behind the monster. Do you make a bomb and kill it. Do you make light and force it back and make a run for the key. Do you use Mage Hand or similar. Do you say sod this and go find a tavern. Or something else.

This is pretty cool but it seems a little railroady, as in there is one specific way to solve this encounter... Are there more?

You could de-level the monster and bring all the stats down proportionally. That's what I do almost ALL the time. Especially if there is a type of monster that just fits our story but the Stat block has it too strong. Or you can buff them if they are too low level in the Stat block. Just be careful with balance.

This is epic indeed but I feel like, for a low level party, especially with new players, throwing something at them that can and will oneshot them is a bit much...
If you are running a serious campaign with veteran players, they will know to think outside the box and use their environment but a new party will need a lot of clear hints and maybe a little metagaming to get what you need them to do...
