"Letting it marinate" is so true! One day I can't get the dance down and the next day I suddenly get it.

The point you mentioned about not comparing yourself to others is so important! I've been in dance classes ever since I was three years old (I'm 16 now) while I was also a competitive Hip-Hop & commercial dancer. I used to always be placed in the back of formations since I was one of the weakest dancers in my class. This caused me to keep comparing myself to others and even though I practiced a lot, I just wouldn't see any improvement. My goal was never to have fun and to be confident in my skills, it was to reach the skill level everyone else was on (a very bad approach). However, as time went by, I stopped caring about others and started dancing for me. This not only made me realize why I love dance, but it also made me improve significantly! I can finally have fun and feel confident while dancing. I was even chosen to join a competitive K-pop dance team! This just proves that having the right mindset really is the key to progress

sleeping on a dance is kinda miraculous. I always find out that move i tried 100 times yesterday and couldn't do at a right speed just seems easy and natural the next day! I think our brain proccesses it during the night.

    Notes for self
    Tips for learning:
#1. Watch video as much as possible day before
#2. Chunk it- by parts of song or body parts
#3. Let it marinate! Sleep on it
    For improving:
#1. Record yourself! (This is so freaking relatable. Sometimes I think I’m killing it & the video doesn’t look great 😭)
#2-3. Compare to the dance vid but don’t let urself be discouraged.
    #4. Strength & flexibility training (oof 😅)
#5. Learn and brush up on some fundamental dance steps (like take a hip hop fundamental or free vids like steezy) (maybe do a hip hop warm up before dancing)
#6. Find people who motivate you!

The science behind "let it marinate" is similar to why studying is more efficient after a good night's sleep, basically your mind rehearses during the deepest state of the sleep cycle REM, and studies have shown the activation in the brain is on par with those actually doing the practice whilst awake!

Letting it marinate is the truest thing I have ever heard about dancing. I've been dancing since I was a child and there has been a lot of times that I couldn't be able to hit certain beats or do some steps perfectly and I would just let it go for some hours even though I was frustrated and when I went back to it suddenly I would have the steps all figured out! Taking your time is really a crucial part of it.

Thank you so much for your tips! I'm dancing to kpop since December last year. I beginned with shut down by blackpink and I was very surprised that it worked well with the moves. Then in beginning of june i discovered stray kids! I tried learning s class and the footwork was really hard because I've nerver had that much footwork. It took me 2 weeks to get the s class chorus done. Ever since I've danced every day and im currently on my 128th day streak of dancing to kpop every day😂❤. I can already dance to so many songs for example: shut down, Cheshire, s class, killing me good, i love my body, super shy, and way more. Sadly none of my friends are really interested in kpop or dancing so I'm going my own way with that. Some tutorials really help me get the details right (like you with 3d :) ). I'm also very excited for Stray kids comeback soon since im a stay :] I'm improving every single day and I'm so happy about it! Again i want to thank you for the advice and for helping me improve my dance even more❤! I hope you have a great day and keep dancing😊

These tips definitely help me out because I have a cover channel. I learned full dances of Antifragile, Queencard, Lion, Pink Venom, Shut Down. But I didn't let it marinate and did in a rush, so the covers are really bad. But now I can do it really good. I'll keep these in mind next time!

Lee know inspires me to have body control and focused on my dance moves and not give up.
Hyunjin inspires me to have fun while having body control at the same time and to dance everyday and not give up.
Not only them but all of skz inspire me on a lot of diff things :D

Thank you for making this video! Your suggestions sound like good advice. I'm really glad you talked about options for people without mirrors or who can't go to a dance class for example.
I'm also grateful you took the time to address the psychological aspect of learning to dance regarding self-esteem, comparison to people who do this for a living, and frustration at perceived non-improvement.
Just saw an amazing interview of NBA superstar Nikola Jokić by his teammate, Michael Porter Junior. He and their 2023 NBA Championship-winning team share the philosophy "habits, not goals."
This means not to set a goal thinking achieving it is the only way to be happy.
Rather, start making and consistently doing the good habits that will help one to build the process of becoming skilled enough to finish completing the task.
And to ENJOY THE JOURNEY is one of the most important things, as you pointed out.
Setbacks or failures can become valuable learning experiences, a chance to reassess the endpoint, and perhaps make necessary changes to one's habits to achieve it.
I've discovered that when there is a problem, one can choose how to react: is it a burden? Or is it a challenge? The difference in mindset is astonishing!
Thank you very much for the video! Happy new year!🙏🎶💃🕺🪩🎉🥂✨
PS. The Nikola Jokić interview is on the RUclips channel "Curious Mike".

Guys i dance since i was 3 years old but never could really control my dance movements because i had literally NO body control until i got into middle school. The part where she talked abt improving and the 'film yourself' step really helped me. Everything in this vid is what i also do before dancing. Y'all really should listen yo her cuz she has really good tips.

Omg the one with letting it marinate is so true like i remember doing a dance in my group we just learned it i went home i wanted to repeat it and i almost forgot everything i was so mad at myself i started crying but guys next day i got myself up tried it again and see i could do the steps not perfectly Ofc but my head just needed time to process these moves so the worst thing you can do is stressing yourself i sometimes still stress but then i always remember to just let it cool down into my head

Great video, Fuji! I love your Videos. The tips are super helpful. Could you make more videos like this? Also, do you use counts? I struggle with them, so if you have any tips or explanations, that would be really nice! Many say that knowing counts is important to be a good dancer. True?
As for myself, I sometimes feel that I dance too powerfully or it gets a bit messy. I'm not sure how to fix that. Any advice would be appreciated.
By the way, I really love your profile picture! 💃👍

    How I learn kpop choreo
    1. Hand movement/ upper body movement ( only the steps you observe or what you can do easily)
    2. Leg movement ( also like the 1st one)
    3. Do both with the music
    4. Practice complicated hand / upper body and leg movement
    5. Do step 4 with music
    6. Practice x100000
Dont forget to warm up and take breaks from time to time
Also, am I the only one who does dance practice without a mirror?! Like my self confidence drops to all time low whenever I see myself in the mirror

I'm tryna learning how to dance kpop, this was really helpfull. Thanks!! As a personal tip, if you feel a song is too fast for you, slow it until you feel confortable, then make it a little fast, little by little. I start always with 0.5, then 0.6, 0.7...Until I get to the normal speed. Hope somedoby find this useful.

i'm like a month late but i just wanna say thank you for making this video. this comment is gonna be a very long one, so sorry for that 🧍🏻‍♂️. i've been dancing to kpop since late 2016 but not properly, i only start to take kpop dancing (or just dancing in general) around 2020.
3 years have passed, it has been very VERY difficult. i also have joined a kpop dance crew in 2021 and i kinda stopped around this year because of my deteriorating mental health from negative perceptions of myself when dancing (esp since i'm a vvv slow learner, it's so stressful) and comparing myself to others in my crew. i used to be so comfortable and felt included with them but somewhere early this year, everything gets even worse and learning dance just become so tedious for me, it made me sad cause i'm not good at anything else but dancing and i felt like i was losing myself.
then, around this september,,, i think? one of the leaders of my crew decided to hold a reaudition because the crew has been more inactive than ever. at first, i prepared myself well but along the process, i just start doubting myself and all the harmful thoughts just swarm my head and decide to leave the crew. coincidentally, the same leader offered for managing position for the crew and somewhere deep inside me suddenly doesn't really want to leave the crew because somehow i felt like i'd completely lose my love for dancing (?). now, i'm technically still in the crew but i manage the youtube and email section.
as of now, i've been thinking of going back to dancing and your video just got recommended to me and I take this as a sign to slowly fall in love with dancing and reaudition for my crew properly ❤ I especially appreciate you for touching upon the marinating, negative perceptions and comparisons because those are really what i struggle with 🥹
thank you so much for helping me to recover my love for dancing again 💛
