  • I stumbled into a flooded field loaded with carp, buffalo and gar. Unfortunately most of them will become buzzard food, but I was able to shoot a few for the compost pile.

Oh man, that brings back memories of when I was young and lived in North MS, and the spring floods would push carp and buffalo over creek banks and into the lowland soybean fields. We would wade water to our knees and sometimes wastes and shoot fish with our old recurves with an open spool on the front wrapped in small nylon cord. Shots were 10-15 feet and sometimes closer, and we would harvest several large ones.
Once the waters receded back into the banks, the fish were trapped in the old combine ruts, and we would use frog gigs on 8 foot poles to harvest them. We would get so many fish, we had to give most of them away. I never cared much for carp nor buffalo meat, but we would cut the straps off, cook for strips or make "carp balls" with corn meal like hush puppies.

Fun! When we were youth in the Embarras river bottoms we would catch all types of fish with our bare hands in the flooded fields. It was a blast. My dad fetched out a 50+ pound buffalo when I was a child. It was as long as I was tall at 7-8 years old. Lotsa massive carp also.

    Fish in a barrel.
About 50 years ago, I used to shoot gar, bowfin, and carp in sumps left behind when the Red River would drop after a flood. Since they did the navigation project on it, it doesn't do that anymore.

They used to have crop leases around a public lake I bow fished. The farmers were required to leave part of the corn standing for wildlife. One spring, those standing corn fields flooded, and I shot carp sucking on the corn cobs still stuck to the corn stalks. Some of the submerged ears of corn were actually sprouting out of the cob when the water level dropped below them. Crazy.

Nice one for buffalo ribs. You need a pulp wood hook. Look up Peavey Mfg. model 606 or an International, according to what angle you want.

Im not telling anyone what to do by any means but personally i dont like to shoot the arrow slides when i have a reel on the bow cause it will allow you to draw the bow even when your button is not pushed on the reel and if you fire without the button pushed can be bad i like to tie directly to the arrow if your button is not pushed arrow will pop off string before you can draw thats just me though

Just out of curiosity, have you given up chasing river catfish with rods and reels? I used to love going along on those trips and learned a lot about catfish that I didn't know. Either way, all the best, Chris (in Maine)

Ive found on the low pound bow scenarios we may find ourselves in, on those monster bigmouth buffalo... attempt the pass through near the back fin instead of the head shot that usually only provides you with 1/2 fish penetration due to the scale thickness there.
