    Your perceptions about the area are very informative. You give us a balanced view of what's going on in each town which helps us decide which option is best. Cary for all it's amenities is crowded. If you have to search for a parking spot (or just squeeze in somewhere) that means it's time to move further out. More people = less services or more taxes.

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 года назад +1

      Taxes are actually a little higher in holly springs.
      Also, crowded is very different for everyone. People coming from California probably think I’m funny. 😂

    Good call (IMO). We lived in Preston Village (Cary) ~ 20 years ago and very sadly had to move away for work -- we're still not over that! We began exploring a return to Cary over the past two years but stopped for two reasons: first, the real estate market was hyper-competitive and second, as a new retiree, we just don't need the "hassle factor" of the crowds/traffic etc; the huge draw of all of the great employers has no value for us. The third reason is that it reminds me of growing up in the 60's on Long Island, NY -- constant growth in opportunities and traffic and hassles to the point we were living a Yogi Berra line, "Nobody goes there anymore -- it's too crowded!"😁

    @Ellen Pitts, We are exploring the area to move and are not able to find information about what my 5yr old kid can do for his after school classes like swimming, painting, gymnastics, etc. Currently we rent near to Cary and we could find many places in Cary for this. Please provide your experience and opinion, now that you lived in both places. Thank you.

    I lived in Morrisville for about seven years, but ended up buying a house in Holly Springs. I have personally loved the town, and while I really enjoyed being close to everything in Morrisville/Cary, being that close to RTP was a pain. I mostly work from home now so driving 30 minutes to get to work is usually fine, and if we ever want to eat somewhere in Cary or do any shopping then Crossroads is really easy to get to. I have nothing bad to say about Morrisville or Cary, but Holly Springs has definitely made it feel a little less chaotic.

    I like that Cary is getting more urban walkable and bikeable, holly springs is too far out and unplanned when I have gone there. The good thing is there is someplace for every kind of living around here still. I feel like Cary's growth has made it feel more close and homey and friendly in the 30 or so years I have lived here.

    Can’t thank you enough for this video! I’m considering moving to Cary next year but I definitely can’t afford to buy a home so I would just rent. We really wanted to move to Holly Springs (from our rental in Cary) but found there to not be much inventory in our price range so we ended up in Fuquay (but only about 7 mins from downtown HS) so I feel like we are really getting the best of both worlds! That being said we both aren’t excited about the increase in drive time but we are very excited to own a home with a little land!

    1) Holly Springs is a much better-planned town than Cary.
    2) Holly Springs actually boasts a quicker commute to RTP than many parts of Cary (like the south side).
    3) My daughter went to Athens Drive by choice (during the few years when there were options). During her tenure there, a vice principle was pushed through the library window, shattering it. There were multiple reports of gunshots. Worst that ever happened at Middle Creek (where my son went at the same time) were a few less-than-minute cafeteria cat fights.
    That being said, Athens was a phenomenal high school, with wonderful performing arts departments, a highly diverse student body, and fine academics. My daughter quickly made friends that she has kept to this day. But I did get auto-calls from the school system about lockdowns and violence, and once my daughter called me from under a table telling me that she was fine, if I had 'heard the news'. And that was ~7 years ago. Incidentally, I went to Athens the year after it opened :)

    • @EllenPitts

      Yeah I had two other kids that went to athens. It’s a mixed bag for sure! I think Cary is really well planned with the exception of crossroads 😂 That place is a mess. But not so bad these days since internet shopping got more popular.
      Yeah I guess hopping on the toll road is pretty quick these days. I hadn’t thought of that but you’re right!

    Keep om going east past Fuquay-Varina into JoCo. Close enough to the foodie places yet a lot less traffic on those country roads. The real estate taxes are lower too. Schools are sufficient given the population. I love it here!

    The area that you left, with its central location and large lots, seems well positioned for teardowns going into the future. That said, I've always wondered whether that area had Cary or Raleigh addresses.

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 года назад +1

      Believe it or not some of the homes in our neighborhood were Cary and some were Raleigh. Some were zoned to Cary High and some to athens drive. It’s a weird little section! But yeah, I have thought for years that we will have tear downs eventually. The town of Cary has plans for a sidewalk to connect from Trinity on the north side of chapel hill road to Fenton. And once it’s connected it will only be a mile walk. Probably 10 years down the line…

    As a native of the area that was annexed to Holly Springs, the changes are bittersweet. It no longer feels like a small town. One reason is there are no more backroads, which makes the traffic horrendous. Heavy traffic is not a characteristic of small towns. I live in Holly Springs town limits now and I have to add time to commute to accommodate being able to get out of my neighborhood. Also, it feels like communities are now just neighborhoods. The changes are bittersweet because I do enjoy the convenience and variety of stores and restaurants. I am now feeling what my elders felt about changes when I was little. It’s still a great place to live though.

    Was Apex in the running for you, if so what were y’all’s deciding points for and ultimately against? How does Apex compare to either of Cary and Holly given the same parameters you listed in this video?

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 года назад +5

      I think Apex is a lot like Cary, except it is not as connected. In pretty much any Cary location, you can walk to something....a park, a restaurant, coffee shop. There are sidewalks everywhere and greenways walkable from just about every neighborhood. A lot of Apex's recent development has not been connected yet. Honestly, Holly Springs is that way as well. Many of the neighborhoods west of 55 in both Apex and Holly Springs are not yet connected by sidewalks to the town. We bought on the east side of Holly Springs and we can walk to everything... lots of shops, restaurants, the farmers market. There is a big greenway connecting us to parks. It's awesome.
      Apex was certainly a possibility for us. Probably the biggest part of our decision was the house. Realtors are the WORST buyers!! LOL! I just really wanted a house with a floor plan that I hadn't seen before. So many of the homes in this area have virtually the same floor plan. And when you look at a lot of them....LOL! When I really think about it, the decision was probably less about the area and more about the individual house. It's a custom home that has a European cottage feel. The floor plan is really unique and it's in a neighborhood with beautiful tree lined streets, in a great school district, walkable to everything. If I could have gotten that combination of things in my price range, anywhere in the Triangle, I would have bought it. I might have to do a TikTok about my house so people can see it.
