Finding the Boreal Owl

  • One day, I went for a walk in the forest. Some Clark's nutcrackers were vocalizing across the way and so I followed the sound to see what they were focusing on. I walked and listened, only a few steps at a time. Once I got to the center of the noise, I turned on my GoPro. I had no idea what I might see beneath the screaming nutcrackers and chattering squirrel, and probably walked right past it many times before finally catching sight of a boreal owl. Well, I had seen saw whet owls in the area and so naturally thought that is what I found. But, the more I looked at those eyes, the dark circle, and thought back to an owl I'd seen in Minnesota the year before, realized it was the elusive boreal. Over my years as a wildlife photographer who likes to go my own way, the birds have led me to many great sightings.

As I get older, my son helps me find the harder to see animals. It's nice to have alone time with the animals compared to crazy massive crowd time.

Very cool - I've never seen one. Of course, we don't have many owls around here. Thanks for sharing!

This is an amazing video, Deby! Even if you hadn't found the owl, it still would have been worth the watch. My goodness, the views of the owl is outstanding!
A long time ago, the best owl 🦉 photo I ever saw was a tiny owl on a tree limb. You got it in Yellowstone.. I'll never forget that shot. You are one of the best photographers. 💕🦉❤️

Owls are awesome animals. They play as big a role in keeping rodent population down as much as coyotes and bobcats and foxes.

I have never found an owl that hadn't see me a long time before I saw it. But there is no greater feeling than to ascertain that there has to be an owl in that stand of trees and then to find one there. In Africa, the guides listen to the monkeys. They have a special vocalization for their most feared predator, the leopard.

Hi Deby! Great video of that super special sighting! Thanks again for sharing it with me as, despite my careful searching, I hadn't been successful until I saw you! I have kept my promise to NOT post my pics.... now that a full year has passed and you just posted I feel free to share in the near future. Cheers to you my friend, Vicki
