Fun fact for casual swimmers like this inexperienced mother and her 10 year old child: if there are 30 surfers out there who have been surfing for decades, the water is very very likely not safe enough for you and your children to be in. They’re out there because of the rips and waves dude, you gotta think...

Yeah, they tried to cut away but I would never leave my kid. I got pulled by a rip when I was about that age, and my aunt was with me. She never would have left.
Someone’s kid got stuck in one and the parents couldn’t swim so I went to grab him but once the heroic burst went away I realized he was way too big for me so I just floated and held him up til someone could help me get him back to shore personally what I think she should’ve done with her son
Think this mother took in too much water and its affecting her brain....I'll tell you what Ima die trying to rescue my son and make sure that he at least makes it out with his life.
And chances are excellent that for every youngster who dies because they took the wrong risk living out in the more remote areas of the nation, there are dozens who die because they took the wrong risk living in a dangerous city with so many unnatural hazards and vicious predators. So yes. The people who so easily over-look the risks that they regularly expose their own children to as a matter of course because of where they live, need to climb down off their moral preening perches. I'm sure people do all kinds of absolutely brain-dead dangerous things in our major urban centers numerous times daily, but so far have been lucky and gotten away without mishap.
A grown man experienced surfer experiencing the waves in a hurricane versus a ten year old boy because we are local and?? the Mom is talking crap. You can't compare them.
2:00 Based on mom's facial expressions, her voice, her speech patterns, and what she said, I can say with reasonable scientific accuracy that her IQ is somewhere in the range of 70-85.
Everyone should always have a healthy fear of it, and quite frankly, I worry about some of my friends who are naive enough to not fear it, and who also think they're strong swimmers when they aren't, they've done things that could've easily gotten themselves killed, but for the sheer grace of God they didn't get into trouble.
I'm a local on the beach in Florida. Im smart enough to know not to get in on double reds. AND!!!! Especially when a hurricane is coming in. It's putting at risk emergency crews and folks who are willing to go out to bring dumbasses back in. Btw...most locals who rescue don't live to tell about it. They drop DEAD on the beach due to heart attack. Massive cardiac strain on the rescuer.
I’m sure he used the camera on the drone which sends live video feed back to the remote control pad to assess the situation and see if someone was in trouble and exactly where he was at, so he could help get him out of trouble with the rip current.
She allowed her 10 year old to swim in dangerous currents “because we’re local”??? Is she nuts? Does she think that living in the area confers some special immunity from being swept out to sea by a riptide? 😵💫
I normally hate didactic newscasts, but this would have been a great opportunity to inform people that this situation would not have been dangerous had he kid simply turned his board the direction of the longshore current (the way you drift down the beach) and swam out of the ripcurrent . Or even if he just did anything other than what he did. Rip currents are not all that dangerous unless you do what this kid did and panic and start treadmilling in it. Especially if you have a board. Even if he just let it take him all the way to the terminus of the current---which will be just past the breaks in most cases---he has a floatation device to assist him with the extra distance he may have to swim. The panicky response was the real danger in the situation not the ripcurrent. Ripcurrent safety: (A) If you would be incapable of swimming back from a bit past where the waves are breaking, do not go into the water. (B) When getting in the water always note the direction of the longshore current---that is the direction you drift down the beach. (C) If you get caught in a rip current, and do not care to be taken out past the breaks, no big deal, we determined in step (A) that you can handle this even in the worst case scenario. Just turn in the direction of the longshore current, and swim parralel to the beach. When you notice you are no longer drifting out , swim a little furthur, and then start swimming in.
I'd say some of the times where it can be really dangerous for anyone, is when you have the sets breaking in a way that they only carry you so far back to shore each time, and the rip yanks you back out, break in, rip out, and you're in a washing machine as you struggle to parallel out of it. I've seen it a few times, almost killed some really legit boarders too. I get it, though, your advice is solid, and it's still true. 👍
Awful answer from the Mom, "why you allow a 10 yr old on open ocean during hurricane, -cause we’re locals"🤦🏻♂️. Now she knows ocean doesn’t give a fu..... between locals or outsiders
Many beaches close during hurricanes or only let experienced surfers out. No swimmers, no bodyboarders. The mom has not learned a single thing from this close call. Swimming in a pool or having a home near a beach does not a waterman make. I guess if you live near Yosemite, you can free climb El Capitan.
You don’t wear life vests, and then others have to come out to save you. People that don’t practice safety well, endanger the lives of others. Some folks would still be here had they not had to go out and save someone, who wasn’t practicing safety.
People who grow up in a city really have no idea of the risks locals in more remote areas take just as a matter of course in their life. Grow up in the Near North we used to tromp around muskeg full of quagmire, dive through "black holes" in the floating mat of vegetation, swim in quarries and under significant waterfalls in hydro-electric dam overflows, "rock climbing" against the current to dive into dark frigid preternaturally-still hydraulic potholes where monster pickerel lurked, play chicken with storm waves washing over jetties and ducking behind the lighthouse to avoid being swept off. All things that would likely get a visiting tourist or weekend warrior in serious trouble. Yet each "home territory" has its risks that "the locals" learn to deal with. A 10 y.o. child in the wrong area of the city at the wrong time of day is likely to be in far more danger than this boy. @@sarah.phillipa854 Yes, they can be incredibly strong. But the point still stands, he had a perfectly fine floatation device and if does not know how to use it to escape a rip, he does belong in those conditions.

It would seem to be a prime example of the kind of moral preening that results when people live such desperate lives that they need to reach for some extreme and rare example like this to try to prove what good people or acceptable parents they are.
