  • In this 200th installment, Jimmy received his Halloween “Treat” from the good folks at Firebird Music and gets to review and demo the NEW Firefly FFST from Firefly Guitars. This new Super-Strat style is just one of the new “Relic” models available now at www.guitarsgarden.com. My sincere thanks to George and all the staff at Firebird Music! As usual, this guitar is completely stock and right out of the box for this review and demo. Thanks for watching!

Nice review of the relic'ed FFST! Personally, I'm not into guitars that have that look - unless I messed them up. Even then, it might be a coping mechanism to then say they had been "relic'ed". Guitars are perhaps one of the few products where players can get that look when purchased new. Can't imagine that would work well for cars; in fact, the police might have a dim view of those...

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  11 месяцев назад +2

Hi TechnoRiff…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Your opinion on “relics” is pretty much along with the majority of others, and as I stated in the video, my own as well. This guitar did surprise me in that as far as the whole “relic” thing goes, I think Firefly did a good job on it. The guitar is certainly well equipped with roasted maple neck, stainless frets, locking tuners, Alnico 5 pickups, compound radius, etc…these are close to Eart specs at half the cost. They did do some that are “standard” finishes as well. Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing! Much thanks…🎸👍

@@JimmyStewart1 Thank YOU for tirelessly providing so much content for us guitarists!
I agree with you on the great features for price that Firefly provides - in fact, I have a FFTL HH/trem with Chameleon Blue finish that's really eye-catching, and quite fun to play. One thing I wish that Firefly would improve is their customer service that I've found to be a bit slow in responding to. If they sold thru Amazon like Eart or Westcreek, I think this would be more seamless. But then, perhaps the cost would go up as a result.

My pleasure man…truly appreciate that. They use to sell pretty much exclusively on Amazon in the beginning, starting back in 2017. With margins being pretty thin to begin with, they decided that selling via Amazon (and the % they took off the top) they simply couldn’t make a profit on the small batches they produce. They are still a small business, with very few employees who are all located in China. Language, time differences, and other cultural differences does make customer service spotty at times. That, and the fact of the way they had to setup warehousing and delivery via “long distance” is certainly not ideal. They continue to try to improve as best they can I think. Again, much thanks for stopping in and sharing your thoughts. 🎸👍

Haven't been tempted to actually buy a guitar in a couple years. Been super impressed with all the excellent quality $250-$300 guitars coming out, but a nice vintage white reliced HSS strat with stainless frets for $169? Can't pass that up. Had my eyes on the Charvel Henrik Danhage guitar for years, but $1,300 is a lot to spend on a guitar I don't need lol. This gets close enough for 10% the price.

I got the $149 one based on your review and it is awesome! I just bought a PRS SE and from a playability aspect it's just as good if not better! The locking tuners are the one downside. I haven't had a tuner on a guitar that has play in it for decades but these tuners have maybe an 1/8" play in it before the gears engage. The strings and pickups aren't that great and it needs a setup but the neck is as good as on any Fender if you ask me! Every note rings out very nicely (which is not the case on so many guitars!) and the frets are polished and smooth! For $150 this is a great deal! It even looks like they used real abalone fretboard dots, and it has stainless steel frets (but probably the really soft grade of stainless steel) and a bone nut. Overall well worth the $150! I'm going to mod it with new tuners and pickups.

Sorry Jimmy but one thing i just don't get is why buy a new guitar that has any damage at all.
A well played guitar with age related wear is one thing, but to make a new guitar then damage it
just to give it a well played look makes no sense to me
The only "Relic" guitar i have i inherited when a good friend passed, it is a well played and worn Fender
CBS era Gold on Gold Strat, it weighs a ton, but every time i open the case i want to have it refinished
but i was asked to keep it as is.

Hi Barbara…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Yeah, I certainly get it, and honestly felt the same way and still do in general. However, my mind is changing on relics as in the past, the only relic I would own was the ones I have owned for years and “reliced” myself. I still can’t see spending $2k on a “Relic” Strat, but people do it all the time. For just under $200, this is very affordable way to own a new “Relic” that is very nicely equipped and not only plays/sounds great, but looks the part as well!

everything naturally ages over time, but most "heavy reliced" guitars always look more than a bit overdone & ridiculous to me. First off, that make and model is just not old enough to have that much aggressive wear, especially on a poly finish. If it naturally did then the wood surface would be more of a washed-out grey.
Unless you used the thing to rake leaves, or a family of beavers had their way with it, It just looks very fake to me

As I state in the video, not really my “cup of tea”, but as a “heavy relic” option, I still think FF did a good job on it. It’s pretty much based on the Charvel signature model. Musiclily has a Gotoh 510 knock off bridge with a heavy full steel block and stainless keyhole saddles at 10.5mm string pitch that will fit these Strats, you need to drill out the post bushing holes tho.
On both my pink Strat and my HH Tele with the same trem-- from the batch before this batch-- had tragically cheap bridges, they came with burred knife edges so the bridge plates werent even chrome moly, just mild steel. Not good! The Musiclilly is $37 from the Amazonian. I use the tall skinny step drill by hand to cut thru the paint before I turn the cordless drill loose.
Its a great bridge for the mazuma. Tuners are fine, got the roller string trees, paid the nut grooves some light attention. I use Super Lube, both the oil and grease versions, and 4 Fender vintage tension springs, stays in tune all day floated.
Love the mahagony bodies, beautiful tone. That clear coated ash strat in this batch is mighty tempting tho...

Hi timesurfingalien…thanks for watching and commenting. It’s really the same reason that folks buy a new guitar and sand down the back of the neck…roll the fretboard, replace the bridge, tuners, pickups…etc…it’s all a matter of player preference and guitar feel. Just think of it as another finish option….having the look and feel of a heavily played guitar without waiting 40 years to get it there I suppose. Very nice review of Relic guitars. I have two ash guitars, 1 Telecaster (Harley Benton - Thomann) and 1 Stratocaster from SX in blue. I don't have a relic model yet, in any case the artificial wear makes them at least visually interesting guitars. You're right, ash guitars are a little heavier, so I prefer to use wider straps (6 to 8 cm) for them. Price-wise, my ash guitars, like the Firefly brand, are very affordable and play perfectly OK. Greetings from the Czech Republic, Pavel.

I bought one of the "burst" 3 single coil relics, and it looks pretty cool. The set up was super low but it has a high fret up high that will need some attention. Other than that the fretwork and build are pretty impressive.
The vintage style locking tuners are not the best. But are definitely not the worst I've seen. Completely acceptable at this price point. The pickups sound decent and all the electronics work well. I think overall it's a great deal on a heavy relic "Strat."

They of course offer “non-relic” versions of these as well, but I for one appreciate them taking the chance and filling a void in the market. @JimmyStewart1  10 месяцев назад +1

Hi Carl…sorry to hear of the tuner issues. I will assume you changed out the original strings and did a basic setup? I ask as “most” tuning issues are not actually the fault of “bad tuners”. The stock strings are pretty terrible and would be the 1st thing I would change out. Most tuning issues are strings, bridge or nut related. There are many different tuners available out there…the stock tuners are Korean sourced, most likely Jin-Ho’s. Wilkinson, Goto, Hipshot, D’Addario, Guyker, all come to mind for decent replacement tuners.

Recent history: Until these new Fireflys, to get all these bells and whistles features on a guitar, you'd have to pay well over $1000 US Dollars, then we began to see this trend several years ago, as the Chinese increasingly entered the guitar-making business, of the price-point lowering; until these new Fireflys, the price for all these sought -after specs had got down to $350-$400 on Chinese- made guitars recently. And we'd hear RUclipsrs saying, "I don't know HOW they can sell these at $350". Well, now Firefly all of a sudden can sell these specs for 200$. This has me concerned; really, how are they able to do this. Let's take a look at some labor conditions that exist in China.
Though, China's Supreme Court ruled that the "996" work schedule is illegal in August of 2021, it's doubtful that it is being enforced. So, even a highly competitive "good job" in many industries in China where a version of USA's "hustle" culture exists and workers attended higher learning before entering the workforce, workers commonly work 9am to 9pm, six days a week/72 hours. Btw, it was similar conditions in USA at beginning of the 20th century until "labor" revolted enough and fought to get "organized labor/unions" founded. In 1955, 33% of USA workers were union members! The unions in USA brought many quality-of -life benefits to families - 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, paid sick-leave, vacation time, etc. You may be old enough to notice that over the last 40 years, increasingly, workers are working longer than 8 hours and more than 5 days; this trend has been the result of the success that the Republican Party has enjoyed destroying labor unions over the last 43 years, starting with Reagan Administration and continuing ( keen observers noticed that in October '23, during the USA Auto industry workers' strike that when Trump went to visit the workers, he actually didn't - he went to a subcontractor's shop that was non-union, his campaign put a few people in the crowd holding "UAW" signs; these sign-holders were later determined to be the non-union-shop owner's family members. Of course, Fox News went along with the lie). Republicans' efforts to destroy the labor unions have resulted in today, ~ only 6% of the private sector being union currently, down drastically from the peak of 35% in ~1953.
Back to Chinese labor conditions: the U.S. Dept of Labor has officially placed 6 Chinese products on list that is produced by forced child labor ( gloves and polysilicone are two examples). More recently, the same dept. issued a report noting that the concentration camp conditions by Chinese govt of the Uyghur people includes more than 100,000 of them being used as forced labor and that there is new evidence that this is no longer occurring ONLY in Xinjiang province, but instead the workers are being delivered elsewhere in China to be put to work in other industries.

A lot of the wear seems a little too much and a little too random. It actually does not look real with that much of the finish off. It just looks like somebody started scraping paint off of a guitar. Just my opinion

    • @JimmyStewart1

Hi Brad…thanks for watching and commenting. Much like other finishes, “relics” come in different degrees of relicing as well. From “light relic to heavy relic” and everything in between. This being a heavy relic, and understandably not everyone’s cup of tea. The guitar however is a nicely made and equipped with a ton of features you would not normally find on any guitar in this price range. They have versions of this without the relic finish as well. I look at it as just another finish option! Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing your thoughts! Much thanks…🎸👍

Hi squirelova…Ash tends to be heavier overall, and of course even within the same manufacturer and model the weight can vary based on density, etc…

They’re not LP heavy, but heavy enough…as I have gotten a bit older, I prefer a lighter bodied guitar, but they are not unreasonably heavy. The plus is the Strat body itself is a well balanced body design.

Oh yes. I still Love my Classic Series 70's Strat to bits! I adore the "vintage" frets and 7.25" Radius too which to me are far more ergonomic but Gretsch necks also feel extremely comfy also. afraid i don't get the whole reliced thing...why would i want my guitar to look like it has just spent a week getting the *&#$ kicked out of it at a drunken outdoor party in the 70's? i ruined a couple in my youth then got rid of them when i got older, and have been taking meticulous care of my guitars ever since...i even have this firefly FFST in white, but not reliced...enjoy

Bet a paycheck they relic with a template. Fender/Squier does on their very limited production nitro relics, they all look just alike.
My relic'd Tele is on the way! I've got the new pickups and the Baja wiring harness ready to go!!
I am very interested in the compound radius neck, I've heard it starts at 9.5 and flattens out to their usual 14".
Others have said the "natural" white finish on the ash bodied strats and teles is disappoiting. And it seems its not terribly clear its ash on the Tele, it looks an awful like mahogany with no grain filler, super straight grain. Folks were expecting a little more Mary Kay

Hi oldasrocks9121….thanks so much for watching and commenting. Congrats on the Tele! Enjoy! I bet you are right on the template. Yes, the compound radius neck is a 9.5 to a 14”…feels great. Feels very similar to the neck on my Eart Tele, but not as thick. The finish on those you mentioned were from another batch…I heard of some of the same complaints…too thick a finish and not transparent enough. Enjoyed your video, as always, but I have to say that I am not a fan of this pseudo "relic" business. I grew up dirt poor and want my new things to look new --- time and use will naturally adjust that, anyway. This "relicked" fad is really just an annoying form of conspicuous consumption. An un-destroyed guitar would sound and play at least as well. --- However, as usual, I did enjoy your video.
