While you're right about virtually everything, It's kinda more than the sum of its parts. If you like Star Trek, especially the 1990s Star Trek, and are not totally reprehended by the adventure game genre, you'll like this. Consider it an interactive miniseries.
Yup this is basically Tell tale style, which I kinda like, but also kinda don't, it gets boring fast for me and I end up dropping the game in the middle. 😞
I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the original Star Trek timeline. It provides a great escape from the disappointing television shows that currently claim to be part of the franchise. Playing it feels like experiencing a new show before the era of Abrams and Kurtzman, who ruined the series..IMO. This game and Star Trek Online satisfy my craving for all things Star Trek. While it would have been nice to create custom characters, the game's excellent story, immersive choices, and fascinating NPCs make up for this drawback. I gave it a hard 8 out of 10 rating and found it refreshing and highly enjoyable.
I appreciate this comment. I was concerned this would be yet another desecration, very happy to hear it's not. Going to pick it up for the holidays, thanks!
@@johnnyzee9618I picked it up on the epic games holiday sale. It is marked down to $24 and epic gives you another 33% off coupon. I got this, telltales The Expanse and a Plague Tale Requiem for like $45. I started star trek first and so far it's been really fun. The framerate is very inconsistent though especially at one part otherwise I think it's like watching an interactive star trek series in a way.
I really like your review style, Sid. You touch on all the important topics and don't bog the review down with fluff that doesn't matter to the gameplay. This is everything I would want to know about a game if I was interested and was looking for opinions. I've been considering how to write reviews lately, and I think your video is great example of how to present the important information. It would be cool if you did these whenever you can. I think your input on games is worth while, even if you don't get a ton of views initially for it.
@@dustojnikhummer very few. Bridge commander snd Voyager elite force are the only two I can think of, and I'd wager I've played most. Well, STO is ptetty decent too, for what it is.

Honestly I'll take a mid game. Better than a lot of other games coming out recently. I'd take a handful of mid but still rather enjoyable games than an over ambitious, or disgustingly predatory game on the off chance it might be good.
With this review as foundation, I'd set my interest in it at perhaps buy at sale. If the choices has little to no effect to the overarching storyline, I can get a VN in a space setting where many choices changes the end result with very well branching storylines. Even though the spoilers made me intrigued to see how and why, it wasn't enough to put it in a will purchase list. I probably have already put this on my wishlist, but this review has dampened my interest somewhat. Thank you SidAlpha for the review, you quenched my curiosities about this game and I'm somewhat disappointed in the handicrafts the devs have shown here. I crave more content from you SidAlpha, but when you're able to do so. Until then, please take care and stay safe!
I was supposed to make a return to streaming after dealing with hackers for 2 months with this game on launch day. Was so excited for it too.. then once again my hopes were dashed when Twitch showed nothing but a black screen or my offline page. YT & FB were working perfectly.. but still can't get Twitch to play nice ever since refreshing my stream key. I was really looking forward to streaming this one too.
game is pretty decent.. maybe not worth 40 bucks but if you like star trek and like telltale games then you should love this.. i know most of the choices make no difference one way or another, besides how the people you interact with feel about you, but the story is good.. and honestly most of these choose your own adventure games are the same.. so, it is what it is.. but, its still fun..
"set on stun of course" ok what setting? 1. stunned for 5 minutes 2. stunned for about 30 minutes 3. sleep state for 1 hour .... and if its a type 2 phaser it should be able to go up to setting 16 where 4 kills and 8 vaporises an organic humanoid target
That brings up an interesting point, only very rarely does the show specify setting, so can someone with more lore knowledge than me answer if there is a canon "stun setting" to use if ordered? I mean, IRL you would assume that the order to set your phaser to stun would automatically mean a specific setting, right?
@@Reddotzebra i believe most times stun means setting 2 (minor correction.. unconscious for up to 15 minutes not 30) unless its a more severe incident but no killing is ordered then 3, or it is purely judgment call for level of stun Type 1 phasers are only capable of setting 3 or lower, Type 2 (hand) and 3 (rifle) can go all the way to 16 although we rarely see Type 1s used
I think i'll stick with Star Trek Online. It has better gameplay mechanics, Your characters are who you want them to be, even down to writing your own background story. And that's another thing with STO. You never run out of stories.
The answer is HELL. YES. If you consider yourself a Star Trek fan, GET. THIS. GAME!!!! The story is great, the gameplay is good (if not exactly what you might want), the narrative-driven story is well-paced, the characters are well-written and easy to connect with (to the point where you really get to like them), and the soundtrack is actually surprisingly beautiful. The overall experience is one I’m looking forward to having again, albeit not in the immediate future, and I’d love to see a sequel or spin-off to this game.
I greatly enjoyed Resurgence because it felt like an interactive episode of actual Star Trek. Most Star Trek games fall into the trap of trying to appeal to a larger gaming audience, resorting to combat and shallow encounters that are contrary to the themes and stories of the franchise. Obviously a more general appeal is going to bring in more income, and incentivize creating experiences like Star Trek Fleet Command and Star Trek Timelines that are cash grab mobile titles. Asking ‘is it worth it’ really depends on if you enjoy a classic style Star Trek story, because Resurgence is going for a niche audience with such a small audience that paying $40 is more like saying ‘please make more games like this instead of bland reskins of other video games that use formulaic action’. If we don’t invest the money, we are just going to get more bizarre video game takes on Star Trek. After the past few months of incredibly poorly optimized PC releases, and the many platforms like Epic Games I don’t want to invest time and money into, I’m basically only doing console gaming these days. There were a few graphical oddities, but a far majority of the game looked and worked just fine.
With too many games released unfinished, broken, a buggy mess or generally on its ass, i always wait until after release and in situations like this i wait until its sufficiently fixed, otherwise i just pass. Cyberpunk, i waited nearly 18 months because it took so long to get it into a decent workable state. I never preorder or day one purchase and will always wait as long as necessary until a game is fixed or in a payable state with as less disruption to the gameplay as possible.

@DrVurruct it's just commonsense, to be honest. I think the hype creates excitement, and so many lose any impulse control and, without thinking, get the game, then realise what they done. I can easily afford the games, no problem, but it's the principle and expect games to be released in a decent state. The industry creates hype to manipulate the day one/preordering, and sadly, millions fall for it every time
Sweet, good to see you going back to your roots. While I don't think it was an actual review video, I bought Phantom Doctrine after seeing it on one of your videos.
I appreciate your discussion of the story and writing; a lot of game reviews I've seen don't put much time into evaluating the writing, and for me that's one of the most important aspects of a game, so it's hard to find reviews actually relevant to my interests sometimes. Also, you couldn't even close it with _task manager_ when it crashed? Scary, lol.
I played a little. It has nice characters, a seemingly interesting story so far but is very VERY outdated in the technical department. Still, for a few bucks, I'd say try it out.
I loved watching people stream this game! It was like a movie watch along and see how people can screw things up haha. The story was fun, despite the occasional hiccups with gameplay where it'd forget to progress to the next point and you have to restart from a checkpoint.
Just something that came to mind when I saw the resolution selection. If you're running high DPI screen with 1440p or very high DPI screen with 4k with display scaling at 125% or higher the game might think your native resolution is smaller than it should be. It's something you might encounter every once in a while and can be somewhat finicky to get around. This is something developer needs to fix, but as work around you might be able to edit the config files for the game (if such a thing exists) with your favourite text editor. Also in some cases you might be able to get around it by fiddling with windowed fullscreen, fullscreen and windowed modes. Of course the game doesn't really seem to give much options here, but something I've seen every once in a while over last decade or so. This was a problem with everything Gearbox Software released up until Battleborn (last game I played from Gearbox Software) and also plagues Arma3 from Bohemia Interactive. Just a few examples from top of my head.
I vaguely remember when this was announced... I rather wish my gut instincts about the quality of the gameplay and story were wrong, this is one case I would have loved to have been wrong.
I was like, Theres a new star trek game? Then I remembered oh yeah right, i put it at the back of my mind once i remembered it was going to be an EGS exclusive.
The video game sounds like a high tier avn game, but with all fun elements taken out so that it could maybe get a good for family rating but instead getting a teen rating and just hope that it's still treated as a family friendly game in a space slam packed with mostly cheap avn games.

This is limited as a game it crashed on me 3 times but works as a ST story through and through. Like if this was the sprey of an arc of Star Trek with this crew I would welcome it.
I've played a couple of hours of this, my ultimate view is it's heart is in the right place. Miles better than the trash on TV Klutzman has been trying to feed us. Just a shame about the technical issues and lack of options menu, you currently can't even invert the y mouse axis!

Man I missed your format of game reviews. It seems like the game has shader compilation issues, especially if it runs smoothly on the second go, not a game-breaking bug but from a game design perspective, who wants the first time playing a game to be the worst possible experience? I find the Telltale formula for game design to be the issue at fault here, all the issues with story, replayability, weird graphical glitches, and that same “branching path” marketing that’s actually an elaborate lie on the game development side. Sure the choices can seem different during gameplay, but in hindsight the stories has to begin and end in the same place or they have to make different assets. Typically the game is most polished in the beginning and least polished toward the end where even if different endings were planned at some point, they inevitably get chopped off to meet deadlines. And let’s be honest, it takes a particular skill to make a story that resonates with the target audience, by all accounts this is a love letter to the franchise (and marketing for current content *cough*) which they seem to have. It takes a completely different skill to create well-crafted scenarios that still fit into reasonable budgets and timeframes that few writers in the world truly have. Would excellent writing even be given justice without more intricate animations, wouldn’t a more interesting journey take place in world with more intricate world building? I don’t think criticizing the writing is unfair, it just seems a lot of the aspects holding this game back are the same issues Telltale games had, so they copied the formula but haven’t figured any way to improve it, so your lukewarm reception of it makes a lot of sense to me.
I've been watching it since the original announcement a year or so ago. Had they released it somewhere other than Epic, I'd probably already have it. As is, I'll be waiting for a sale and possible steam release. That said, it's nice to know that there are at least a few people in and around Trek that can still tell a story. Other than the fans, which still seem to do a better job most of the time.
Waiting for the follow up video where the T'Kon come after Sid Alpha in a frivolous lawsuit for exposing their attempts to use block chain technology to assimilate modern day earth through the distribution of the game.
This is the sci fi equivalent of that new gollum game. Literally paid forty bucks to play an interactive cutscene. Can't even invert the Y axis. Even as a dyed in the wool trekkie, I can only get through it in twenty minutes sessions lest I become comatose. R2 button on my controller needs replacing along with the will to live.
I do want to play this, since I love Star Trek and I can't watch it since I don't have Paramount+. I'll probably wait and buy it on sale though. I don't really have $40 to spend these days.
If you don't have Paramount+, well you ain't missing anything, trust me. A bunch of woke garbage that craps all over the legacy of Gene Roddenberry, and nothing else. I downloaded all the good Star Trek series in DRM free formats years ago, and I keep them on a 4TB external SSD. That's the way to go.
My only question is about the options menu. I know some games have different options menus in the main menu vs in game, with some games having more options in game. Is there any difference in this for ST:R?
You're the first person I've seen that said get this on sale. Which I totally agree with just by looks alone. I think 40 is a steep asking price even for this. The ones I've seen who love it are Trek youtubers. They're bias because of how hardcore of trek fans they are. I think 30 wouldn't be to bad of an asking price for this.
When this came out was the first I heard of it, curious I looked it up and found some raving positive reviews, but when I look at footage of the game... It's so... cluncky.... I don't have time for cluncky.
I was very disappointed with the story of this game. I can overlook poor graphics and rails, but if the story is just a throw away rip off of a canon episode it is hard to call it a "good" game. After watching a RUclipsr play the game entirely, I am really glad I didn't waste my money on this hastily built and poorly written piece of nostalgia. Great Job SidAlpha, your review was very fair and well done!
I agree with saying put this on your wait for sale list. If your ok with cringe voice acting and a obviously budgeted game go for it but for myself I'll definitely be putting this on my wait for sale list to which is a shame tbh bc single player story driven games are my favorite kind of game but from the start I saw how limited this game was. I was at the very least hoping for character creation
Nah, I wouldn't buy that game, not for 40 bucks, if it was 10 bucks it would be worth it if the story was worth experiencing, but for what they promise and what they seem to deliver I wouldn't buy this game at any price. If they removed the bugs so that the graphics or technical aspect of the game can't interfere then maybe 10 bucks is ok.
Is it just me or are there 600 Star Wars games, to every 1 Star Trek game? Why is that? Edit: And no. It's not worth it to me. As it would require an EGS account to be made. And I refuse to support the EGS in any way, shape, or form.
Currently only on Epic and on Playstation and Xbox. Do believe once again, Epic footed the bill to get an exclusive. Meanwhile, on consoles, it was no hassle. Hell, being it is on Xbox, can get the darn game and play it on a Windows computer with no issue. And don't need to give Epic money.
It looks like the Telltale Walking Dead games. If that's the case, it's anything but boring, and maybe even the most heart-pounding narrative driven gaming experience you could have...
Its a real shame. I hate to be negative as people have worked hard. But its 2023, yhe graphics are really crap. The story is long and boring. Telltale walking dead was fun and entertaining, this is long and boring often found myself doing otherstuff whilst game was going through scenes. Ive unfortunately told friends not to buy its a bad game. Maybe in 15 years when its being sold for 1 pound or free, but its really bad.

I've successfully avoided epic game store to this point
This game wont have me breaking that trend
I've been watching it since the original announcement a year or so ago. Had they released it somewhere other than Epic, I'd probably already have it. As is, I'll be waiting for a sale and possible steam release. That said, it's nice to know that there are at least a few people in and around Trek that can still tell a story. Other than the fans, which still seem to do a better job most of the time.

This would have been a great game 15 years ago
i will wait to see if the game goes on sale before picking it up
several videos in the same month, you spoil us
I'd say it's Worf it, but I will wait until it's on Steam. :) Also, I think Carter should have picked Nillie as his gurlfriend.
Supernovas were shown to lead to either the anti matter universe or the q continuum.
That is an excellent question.
Waiting for the follow up video where the T'Kon come after Sid Alpha in a frivolous lawsuit for exposing their attempts to use block chain technology to assimilate modern day earth through the distribution of the game.
The Sims has taken a strange turn.
Game process couldn't be killed? Wonder if some DRM is at fault for that...
I dont like the fact that you can't even freely explore the U.S.S. RESOLUTE after at least completing the game ! 😢
Ah the good old day's
i totally forgot this game was a thing
I do want to play this, since I love Star Trek and I can't watch it since I don't have Paramount+. I'll probably wait and buy it on sale though. I don't really have $40 to spend these days.
i just finished it, its pretty fun. if you like star trek and like telltale games, then you'll love this game..
@@jtjones4727 Strange New Worlds is very good 👍
The actual gameplay seems horrid. Shame the dialogue options don't keep true to the original's reason for existing.
I think I'd rather play through Voyager Elite Force 1 & 2 again than this.
holy shit, a video that isn't about assholes or lawyers...
who are you and what have you done with Sid?
My only question is about the options menu. I know some games have different options menus in the main menu vs in game, with some games having more options in game. Is there any difference in this for ST:R?
Star Trek's justification: It was a really big supernova.
Cool, a game review from you! Too bad it's this. I'd love to see more game reviews from you though, dude!
Not for $40 is it worth it.
No numerical rating for this review? 9.9/10
Also welcome back - more reviews maybe?
Can you review Golem plz 🙏 😆
I will.
It's bad
@@burniejarvis9298 That's why it would be great. Some of SidAlpha's best are when he's explaining why s(h)it is s(h)it.
@@SidAlpha Now im excited lol
You're the first person I've seen that said get this on sale. Which I totally agree with just by looks alone. I think 40 is a steep asking price even for this. The ones I've seen who love it are Trek youtubers. They're bias because of how hardcore of trek fans they are. I think 30 wouldn't be to bad of an asking price for this.
Funny thing is, I'm an even bigger Trek fan than a lot of them. :P
@@SidAlpha Opinions on Lower Decks?
the way the charaqcters move and interact with each other looks a little strange
Welp, it looks like you saved me a bunch of trouble Sid. The combination of a 'ramrod-plot' and epic games store make it a no-go.
Seems more or less a telltale game
This game seems like an Indie attempt at a Star Trek game.
I wish this was a real Holo novel.
Canon, not cannon
@@pike100 Thanks, fixed.
Happy to see you getting back to the meeting potatoes you like so much game reviews.
Mark, the expression is "meat and potatoes."
@@pike100 I didn't notice that auto correct did that to me. Not gonna fix it because you pointed it out, And people need to laugh.
Hopefully it’s better then Lower Decks cause Lower Decks (the show, not the TNG episode) is awful.
Bad take
@@Anton3055 Smart take.
If you like Lower Decks (the show, not the TNG episode) then you have no accounting for taste.
@@Ashkihyena Get lost, Discovery lover.
@@dustojnikhummer Not sure where you got that, cause much like Lower Decks Discovery is ass, so try again scrub.
I'm glad you specified which Lower Decks you meant. My brain refuses to acknowledge the series, but the TNG episode was always a favourite of mine.
I can't believe a game in 2023 doesn't support 1440p or 4k, that is atrocious.
That combat looks super awkward. Who the heck holds a phaser with both hands?
Someone who can't handle the recoil.
LMAO
Someone who wants to hit their target. Same reason people hold REAL guns with both hands.
Answer is yes. Get it
is rhis eve real? its not on steam...
Game studios need to understand that if it's not on steam it doesn't exist for 90% of people. Release the game on steam. Epic is trash.
People should stop being so steam reliant. Don't forget what happens you rely on a monopoly. Netflix and Facebook are best known examples.
unfortunately QTEs turn literally anything into a "never buy" for me. i hate them that much.
at least taletell QTE will give you a funny game over for failing them
@@almalone3282 and I'd watch a yt compilation of them, but I wouldn't buy the games anymore.
epic games ? HAH no tnx
child
It looks like a visual novel with some on rails moments.
Boring.
It looks like the Telltale Walking Dead games. If that's the case, it's anything but boring, and maybe even the most heart-pounding narrative driven gaming experience you could have...
It looks PAINFULLY average.
