1999 Nissan Altima idle problems

  • My car (99 nissan altima, automatic 2.4ltr- KA24DE) started stalling at lights. I changed air filter and cleaned throttle (pedal was sticking) in hopes that would be it. After a few more days of the same stalling, I removed the Idle Air Control valve to replace with one I pulled from the junkyard. I cleaned both of them well. The car started idling erratically. RPM and timing now fluctuates. I put the old one back one and it does the same thing. I can't find an new one as everyone has this piece obsolete. No codes now or before IACV cleaning. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching

Widely known, even infamous for cracked & broken upper intake gasket failures. usually happens at the number four cylinder, but it can happen on any hole. Likely looking at replacing that gasket, which includes a LOT of tedious disassembly. Have fun, friend...

Thank you for posting. I had a shop run the smoke machine and I was told there was no leak. Again fuel trims are really high at idle but no leak was detected.

    Easy stuff to check:
Throttle cable tension, these can slack over time leaving a less responsive throttle. You want some slack, but too much is a bad thing. Slack is measure by pulling, not flexing. This car should idle around 650-750 rpm when warmed up. There will be two cables, one is for the throttle and the other is for the cruise control, you want the one closest to you when standing in front of the car. There will be exposed cable, pull it to the left and see how much you have to pull just to get the throttle to actually move, even after properly adjusting it, you will still have slack that will flex, this is okay, it's about pulling, not flexing. If you have a loose gas pedal or have to press it more than you should to get a response, you've got a throttle cable that's too loose. You don't want to over tighten the cable because it will keep the throttle open when it should be closed.
Helpful video of how to do it, though it's on a different car, same thing for any throttle cable, Highly recommend EricTheCarGuy:

Check electrical connections at the alternator and the battery, corroded connections will cause electrical weakness. The engine will run like shit if it's underpowered. If the alternator is going bad then it won't put out enough power, especially at idle, if the brushes are wearing out it will only put out good power with high rpm. The red rubber boot is where the alternator's positive post is at, pull the rubber boot back and check for corrosion on the wire connected to it. Take the nut off and hit the connector and the post with some sand paper. There should also be a small black wire screwed into the right side of the alternator, take it out and clean the bolt and the connector.
A bad design on this model is the positive post connector for the battery, it's a cheapo stamped bracket where it's hard to remove the wires from it, at least mine was until I replaced it. Check for excessive corrosion on any of these wires. Also clean both the positive and negative battery connections. You can get a cheap voltage meter/usb charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter so you can always see what's going on with your electrical system. The battery ground cable connects to the body under the battery holder which is a pain to remove, but it also connects to the engine just under where the spark plug distributor is, you'll see the black wire headed toward the underside of the battery. Take out the bolt and clean it, the connector, and the engine where the hole is. If you're getting a bad ground from the engine it would cause all kinds of issues.
This could also be a failing fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. I would replace the fuel filter and next time your tank gets down to a 1/4, add a fuel system cleaner to the tank before filling it up. This may help clear out any clogged up areas. It may be struggling for fuel pressure.
If you haven't already, think about replacing the spark plug wires. Most people think about the plugs and the distributor but forget about the wires. Check spark plug tubes for oil leaks, it's starts with a drop and leads to a quart, the oil will eventually cause idle issues by disrupting the connection.
Check the air intake area for any cracked rubber or plastic, the hose that connects to the right side of the valve cover for me had a crack in the plastic on the air intake side from it being flexed while changing or cleaning the air filter, all of that work before hand to control the air went for nothing if there's a leak at the end. When you open the filter area, you may want to make sure a mouse or other creature didn't plug up the exposed end of the air intake, it will be behind the driver side headlight, if you find nuts/seeds/grass in there then you know you've got something trying to live in there. There is also a sensor in this tube before the filter that may need to be cleaned or replaced.
Check out this video, skip to around 8:30 to see a fuel hose that commonly gets a hole in it, mine had this issue as well, he shows the hole at 10:30:
    ruclips.net/video/IRXZCX-UO0c/видео.html&ab_channel=Roluardo
The hose he shows doesn't contain liquid fuel, just part of the evap system, easy to replace with a tougher fuel line hose that's the same length. This hose commonly gets a hole in it from sitting on top of the engine. Just an FYI.

having same issue with my 99 altima. changed spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors, MAF sensor and now IACV.. getting better but still a little rough… have you found a solution on yours yet? It must be common with the 99 altima ??

@@felixcervantes7215 thanks. So after changing my MAF sensor and knock sensor, my issues have resolved. No longer running rough or knocking off. Hopefully this helps your issue as well. Good luck 👍🏻

So mine is cutting off with the ac on but only when in drive or reverse. Threw a code for the knock sensor and a Egr replaced the Egr and cleaned the catlytic converter. Gotten a little better but still running rough

12/2/23 I had this problem and it was a vacuum leak from the upper intake manifold gasket.

have you tried throttle position sensor?

    • @felixcervantes7215
      @felixcervantes7215  Год назад

Yup. Tried TPS, O2 sensor, MAF, PCV. Cleaned Throttle body, Idle Air Control Valve and new distributor. I had two shops look at it and the first said it needed a new engine. I explained that I accidentally flooded it when I was cleaning the throttle but he said that didn't matter. The second shop replaced the MAF sensor then the oxygen then the PCV valve and said he ran the smoke machine and got nothing. I personally checked the Throttle, MAF, O2 Sensor, Distributor and inspected the hoses.
On a separate note, the OBD scanner shows me high fuel trims at idle but we couldn't find the leak. The car runs fine for the first 5 minutes then gets real ugly at idle
