  • The celebration of Now-Ruz (New Day), takes effect at the exact astronomical beginning of Spring, known as the vernal equinox. Now-Ruz is celebrated today on March 21th and has been celebrated for nearly 3000 years. It is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature.
The United Nations has proclaimed Nowruz an official UN observance because it promotes peace and solidarity, particularly in families. The day also focuses reconciliation and neighborliness, contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities.
Now-Ruz celebrations last for 13 days. As a child growing up in Iran, Now-Ruz meant a school holiday lasting for 13 days. In fact, most businesses throughout the country would shut down for the duration of Now-Ruz. Everyone was on holiday!
In preparation for Now-Ruz, Iranians embark on the spring-cleaning of their homes, even make or buy a new set of clothes (my brother and I loved getting a new outfit or two), and bake pastries in anticipation of visiting guests when gifts are exchanged and feasts enjoyed.
The rituals surrounding the celebration of Now-Ruz are rich with symbolism and ceremony. They begin on the last Wednesday of winter with Chahar-Shanbeh Soori (Eve of Wednesday), a fire-jumping festival, where people create small bonfires in their neighborhoods and jump over them as the sun sets.

@@ModernWanderer Why isn't it nice to see a women being able to chose how to practise her religion in a free country? Many people leave Iran for religious freedom, and you are saying those who happen to believe in Islam cannot cover how they want in another country that stands for that religious freedom? Your point makes no sense, you can believe in Islam and not be tied to a government. Iranians are one of the only groups in this world that tie religion to their government. If you stand for what you say you do, you shouldn't alienate anyone and you should have the same respect for someone who choses to wear the hijab, as someone who personally does not believe in Islam or covering up.

@@Persian-Gulf. What does that have to do with anything? Yes, many women don't want to wear a hijab in Iran because they don't believe in it and they leave because of that. That doesn't mean everyone is like that. There are many women who believe in their hijab, and it's a part of their religion and identity and have a right to be able to dress how they want in a free country. Just the same as a for example atheist, zoroastrian, jewish, catholic, or christian individual. Not everyone leaves Iran for that, and many don't agree with the government but still chose to practise Islam. It goes against everything those who protest or leave for religious freedom believe in, to ridicule someone for covering based on the religion they chose to practise. In Canada, we respect diversity and inclusitivioty which you obviously have not understood yet.
