    A Smooth Bore pipe requires more Energy to Pump through than a Ribbed Wall Pipe. The difference is the Reynolds Number of the Flow Regime.
    The Smooth Pipe produces Laminar Flow, which is harder to pump, while the ribbed pipe produces Non-Laminar Flow (Turbulent Flow), which pumps more easily.

    Had one for a few months now, pretty damn happy with it myself. I use smooth bore Air Seeder Hose and have no issue with it clogging up. I also made some new nozzles for different situations, like a long aluminium pipe nozzle for getting into deep crevices etc.

    Chris, very sincerely I thank you for a very entertaining and honest review of my device. To everyone who is after one and has messaged me, all my stock was bought tonight and the eBay auction has consequently closed. I will be making up another batch over the weekend so I will keep everyone posted or you can check for the auction being relisted this coming Saturday afternoon. Thank you everyone.Regards,PK.

      Chris. I have purchased one of these and are reasonably happy with it. The only issue i have is that after a few hours the small piece of plastic on the tip broke. If this can be manufactured out of metal it would be a pretty robust kit.

    Great video! Here in the states I have been using a gold and sand pump. Same idea probably the inventor.
    Smooth hose, keep the bucket down stream, put a header box on the sluice, With a carpet baffle / drag to prevent surges.
    Remove the restricter nozzle and go down to 3/4" ish.
    That thing will clean cracks and crevices like you have never seen.
    Great job on the video thank you for sharing!!

    I realize this is an older video so maybe you've already thought of this.
    That corrugated hose I would imagine causes a lot of friction and turbulence as you pump the material through it, a smooth hose should pump easier. And, yes, set the bucket lower than you are if possible. Like you figured - you're pumping uphill.
    3 years later, do you use that attachment? I haven't seen it on any of your other videos. It seemed like it worked well for you.

    I thought about the riffles in the hose just before you said it on video. Glad you thought that too and I imagine it would present a large problem especially for bigger nuggets. Having gold trapped inside that long hose is probably the only point of failure I can see in the setup.

    I think a pump handle like what a water well old time pump handle was designed. Rather than having to extend your arm so far it would be using a fulcrum with the handle. A lot less strain to operate than the single long pull.

  • @GramCanyonSam
    @GramCanyonSam 6 лет назад +3

    Gday Chris . with that pump we have simular product here in the states from "gold & sand " the pumps work well but you need to keep the bucket on its side more then straight up. You will get more material in the bucket. And down at the end of your time pumping simply just put the tip into just water and pump fast shaking the hose it will clear 80% or more out of the hose. And 1 other little tip. If you go on my channel and look at the pump I make you can get these small diameter plastic tubes " somewhat flexible" and have multiple different lengths that can attach to the tip meaning you can get down into a 1/2 crack down to 4 ft or more sticking the tip in .hope this helps some and heavy pans for you this season. Its getting very cold here now but I'm hitting the road for a life move across the country to better gold ground out west can't wait!!! There's 5 oz weekend clean ups and 20 plus gram NUGGIES coming out daily!!

    I've never prospected in my life but I knew that pipe was a problem as soon as I looked at it. Most of the gold would be trapped in the hose before It got to anywhere else.. And definitely not easy to clean out considering gold is a lot heavier than water.. I'd have that thing cut open before the day was over lol

      Hello Comrades, as I can with all of the characteristics of my device, I can tell you that the ideal inlet entry point and direction for the hose to enter the bucket, is in the top of the lid. The reason for this is that the ideal directions for the stream of water to enter the bucket is directly down toward the base (the one I use is configured this way and looses no gold or, as with the model Chris has, which you see in the video, entry on the top at the outer circumference with the stream directed so that it dissipates it energy as it swirls around the outer of the bucket in a whirlpool action. This latter configuration is the better one.Any inlet that has the water/slurry jet directed at an angle of 180 degrees to the bucket lid is not ideal as I have experienced losses with such a set up. In practice, the user should if circumstances allow, be looking to position the collector bucket down stream/hill from the work and, with the bucket canted over at an angle and supported between rocks. Keep the vent at the top position or, if you have a central vent, no need to worry where the vent is as it is in the ideal position. I appreciate that everyone has a different idea of what they like or thinks may be best and, there are a lot of clever folk out there doing our hobby. I very much like to help out and have people get the best out of my device so, I invite people to benefit from all the trial and error that I have prosecuted. If you are wondering about some aspect or idea you have in using the device, please ask as it is very likely I have tested it out before and can tell you if it works well or not so well.Thanks again,PK1966

    Chris, have you tried the hand dredges from Golden Sniffer from the U.S ?
    They use a bellows type pump mechanism instead of the draw method and the suction it creates is amazing, it can empty
    a 44 gallon drum in 2 minutes. I have had one for about 6 months and it is impressive. We found one spot where there was
    a small drop off over bedrock onto another bedrock platform and loads of material had gathered at the bottom.
    Because of the water flow it is very hard to gather material without the pump so we just cleared all the big rocks off the ledge
    and started to pump and it cleaned it bare. You should also have an underwater viewer to inspect where you pumped as you
    will find crevices on the ledge which you can carefully scrape out and then pump again.

      Ian Jackson nah mate, with the grey area of law surrounding hand dredging I wouldn't push It past this

    • @xaj1543
      @xaj1543 6 лет назад +4

      Chris, I don't think there would be any difference in legal terms between the two types of pumps.
      I have said this before but, as the saying goes, the law is an ass.
      If we had thousands of prospectors along the rivers with hand pumps, shovels , pans and sluices it
      would not make one half of one percent of the changes that occur every time we have a flood.
      In one of our local rivers where I have fished for about 30 years there was a deep hole with bedrock on
      3 sides, about 20 feet wide and 60 feet long and a good 10 feet deep at its deepest, that hole is now gone,
      the water is 30cm deep and you can walk straight over it. Two hundred metres further up about 60 metres
      of bank has been washed away taking several large trees with it. We are talking thousands of tons of
      material in one small section of river being moved or added by a single flood.

    I noticed a serious design flaw in that on the forward thrust the nozzle expelled air and water, and most likely gravel back into your hole. I eliminated that problem by using 2 check valves on my version, one on the intake and one on the exhaust. I also use smooth wall pool vacuum hose, it eliminates the problem of sand build up and material flows 5 times faster than with corrugated hose. I've found it's very important to pre classify with the use of a grill on the nozzle that doesn't allow any material larger than half inch into the pump. Amazon has 1.5inch check valves for less than $15 , don't get the spring loaded type they clog easy and require 2-4 psi to open and you wind up working your ass off...just my 2cent!

    • @martyp7401

      I'm not a big fan of those corrugated hoses, but I suppose so long as you just rinse it out well, with the bottom end in a bucket to catch everything, that should be okay. That is so long as the length of hose isn't too overly long. Dredgers use these same kinds of hoses, just bigger. I would definitely prefer a smooth hose in that case.

    Hi Pauly. I always appreciate your videos as much as they are. I think I can help you with your pump because I built one on exactly the same principle and after more than 2 years of trial and error I got there. So for me from what I see your noozel too big in diameter and enter in relation to the pump. The pipe between pump and seal too long and on smooth corrugation would be the best. Your receptacle has gravel and too tall in height too much energy lost to go up. This is definitely not a criticism, just advice. Lucky little Kangaroo gild. By no more friends

  • @WhoWouldWantThisName
    @WhoWouldWantThisName 6 лет назад

    Some sort of attachment which the hose could fit into would be real nice, for the stream sluice. It just needs to pump directly down the center, and the flow rate might be a tad much when you are pumping the material out into the sluice. I think the best solution would be a separate wash box, I'm drawing a blank on the name, crusher box I think. Anyway, just have the hose dump into a trough above the inlet end of the sluice, like on a high banker, then slide down into the main sluice inlet area below. That way the flow rate and direction don't really matter. It would be like a high banker minus the need for a pump and nozzles, etc.. I hope that made even half as much sense as it did in my head.

    It is ideal if you use a smooth wall hose if you can, but with either you just need to do about 5-10 pumps of just water and that cleans out the hose pretty good. PS : my setup doesnt have the 90 degree fitting and it works fine, plus i use a very flexible hose which also helps.

      Are you referring to the elbow inside the bucket lid?

    • @mavenpaul9023
      @mavenpaul9023 6 лет назад

      Yes... i actually attached my hose to the side of another bucket, then cut the bottom of that bucket off approx 8 inches from lid...or 5 inch from lower rib on bucket, that way once one bucket is full i just lift off the quarter bucket with hose attached and put it into a new empty bucket, works great.

    • @WhoWouldWantThisName
      @WhoWouldWantThisName 6 лет назад

      That sounds extremely handy. Quick, no fuss change out to the next bucket. I understand the inventor designed this so that the water blasting down into the bucket can stratify, in the process, then also pump out the top to avoid having the bucket just fill up with water. I think that may still be possible with an outlet hole either in the opposite side from your hose, or just run the hose down through the lid but you could still use the concept you have. Just leave the lid attached to the top portion of bottomless bucket and slide it into the top of the bucket to be filled. You can still slide the top section off and onto the next bucket. In any case, if it is working for you already than I'll just shut up now. :)

    I can see when I prospect in a creek that the immediate water quality is disturbed , there's no denying that, however the areas I prospect also are cattle areas and I see the footprints of them and other animals with their excreta in the water which also impacts water quality , I have seen creeks I prospect in after flooding and I can tell you the damage that occurs is far greater than I could do in a lifetime using shovels ,pans ,and yabbie pumps , as far as I know in NSW the laws only mention the use of shovels ,pans ,but fails to mention anything about even river sluices , but in forestry areas definitely no dredges or any form of electric , pneumatic ,or motorised implements , but I will use my yabbie pump and sluice ,and wear the consequences ,but I won't go down without a fight to retain the right to do something I consider to be a enjoyable past time ,even if the tree huggers don't like it . I still consider I'm an environmentalist as I hate to see rubbish dumped in our bush ,but as humans on this planet seems to be whatever we do , the mere fact we exist, we pollute , it's just to what extent . happy prospecting mate.

      well I don't know about Victoria ,but a permit to prospect in a forest is required in NSW and as I said before it only mentions shovels and pans ,doesn't mention river sluices ,but I use one anyway ,and yabbie pump , but definitely no power implements of any kind in forests ,with the exception of metal detectors, and definitely no prospecting in national parks or tree reserves at all. I don't know about private property seems pretty vague on that , I would think you could use what ever you liked on your own land, but I know Queensland doesn't require a permit at all , but I think same implement requirements apply in forestry areas ,because I lived up their for a while . cheers.

    Does he still use that little clear plastic flap inside it mine always hammed up the first valve and would blow gold in and out the first valve. I put a marine one way flap valve in it now does not push any dirt back out because it closes properly.

      I have tried contacting the guy that makes them but doesn't look like he is in the biz anymore as i have not heard back from him. I really want to make a system like this and am 90% there, just need the valves.

      hey mate. I got myn from a rual plumbing shop. I've not really used it much. i found it to be alot more work than I thought. because u end up having to pump it up from the bottom of a hole. really good in theory but really hard work. personally I would keep your money. I probably waisted 100 bucks on valves. much easier to just pump into a bucket and pan or sluice

      now im thinking a non ripple type hose would work better in my assembly/ project. my gabby has a jobber like this that screws on to a mayonaze plastic jar, but i like the 40L container better. i have to screw off the container when it gets full , slippery hands etc. so the 40L set up is awesome gonna see what i can find for a light flexible hose with no ripples , tough one .

      @@TOCOOLKILLER21 thanks for the reply mate. I did some digging around and found the jabsco marine non return flap valves that people have reported work pretty well so i am hoping they do the trick. Ordered 2 from Ebay last night. Can't wait for them to arrive so i can complete my setup. Will hopefully post a vid in the next month after i have field tested it. I aim to make it modular so that it can also be configured for 2 man operation, one on the pump, one in the water sucking the crevices. Fingers crossed it works, i am really impressed with my diy pump so if tthe rest comes together with the same quality i will be a happer camper. I scoured Bunnings for 3 hours going through bits and bobs and practically assembled half of it in store before i checked out with all my parts. I got a few wierd looks lol.

    • @TOCOOLKILLER21

      @@martyp7401 yeah no problem. They are easy to put together. Now you can make it a straight pull back an shut out into a bucket or something. Or you can assemble a side tube trap to suck up more at a time then dump it. Or hook it to a hose an let it be sucked into a bucket an just keep going until it's full. Work's great for hard to reach places. Under water. Or if ur in a place an can't use a pump to suck it out.
