- Luke Nathan Phillips of Braver Angels chaired a special conversation, hosted by the Hertog Foundation, with Yuval Levin of the American Enterprise Institute and Daniel McCarthy of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute on the status and future of the various coalitions inside American conservatism. Levin and McCarthy have been at the center of conservative thought for the last few decades, and in their positions editing National Affairs and Modern Age, respectively, they have played the interesting role of the intellectual diplomat, weaving disparate factions and distinct traditions into vibrant and relevant intellectual communities. They have also published vast bodies of pioneering work themselves. We considered with them where the chief divides within the conservative intellectual movement have been, especially on questions of institutionalism and populism, markets and the state, and the nature of the American project, and where these conversations are going. And we searched for lessons from the inside of the right on how to think about American divisions more broadly.
Individuals’ appearance on America’s Public Forum does not indicate an endorsement of their policy or politics by Braver Angels as an organization; it merely indicates a shared willingness to explore great themes in the public discourse. They speak as individuals rather than as representatives of affiliated organizations.
