  • In "Can You Ever Forgive Me?," Melissa McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, the best-selling celebrity biographer (and cat lover) who made her living in the 1970's and 80's profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee found herself unable to get published because she had fallen out of step with the marketplace, she turned her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack. McCarthy and fellow stars Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells took to the BUILD stage to discuss the new film.

If you've never seen Withnail & I do it. RIchard E Grant is a freaking genius. This pairing w/Melissa is awesome. Wonderful movie.

1st of all I'm shocked that Dolly Wells is British. Her American accent is one of the best ever. 2nd did they ever mention the cat? There's that scene in the vets office where the cat either sneezes on queue or ad-libs a sneeze. Try getting Meryl Streep to do that. The cat deserved a nomination is all I'm saying.

First of all, the cat should be on stage with them all. Second, if God wanted to be an actor or actress He wouldn't be as good as Meryl Streep is.

If it wasn't for Glenn Close, I'd say Melissa deserves an Oscar this year. Absolutely amazing performance, fascinating story. I'd love to see Melissa in more roles like that, her acting range is awesome! Everyone says it's between Glenn and Gaga. Sorry, Gaga's overrated performance doesn't even come close to what Melissa did portraying Lee Israel.

I haven't seen The Wife but it should be between Nicole Kidman in Destroyer and Melissa in this film. Two of my favorite performances so far last year.

@@PaulKwakFilms You must see The Wife. It's one of Glenn Close's most brilliant performances in her stellar career. Sorry that you think it's OK to state "it between NK & Melissa" for the Oscar when you have not even seen Close's magnificent performance. Her acting is so subtle that in many parts it's like a silent movie as she expresses ranges of emotions in silence. Also if you are interested, know that 2 cameras were used in close-ups which is very unusual. This gave the actors a certain freedom to express themself & not worry about looking into the lens. But then ~ of course ~ let's just give the Oscar to _________ when you haven't even watched all the performances. Glad you're not voting.

I find it very dishonest where the headline says you can watch the "full movie" and then you are showed something entirely different. ADS, actually.

I have watched this movie so many times and I still just love it! I love real people in movies, but Lee Israel was very very unique. This is a movie for anyone out there who has been kicked in the teeth one too many times until that anger builds up and you just say “you know what, I gotta survive too people!”
And I love the judge Judy part. Of course plagiarism is wrong. But in the case of Lee Israel, this was the powerful NYC world of media beating up on someone who did not fit the mold of that 70’s 80’s era. (And if you don’t agree or understand what I meant by that, just read up on her, particularly her book on Estée Lauder and how the NYC glitterati squished her down. Again, timing is key here. I grew up in the 70’s, and it was a mortal sin to “expose” someone like Estée Lauder. Now, she would have been on every talk show out there. And I still think the Estée Lauder corporation casts a long shadow over her, as the book was barely mentioned, but it was a huge reason that Lee Israel found herself behind in her rent.)

An all-star cast did Lee Israel's story justice and more, as they all were truly amazing. And throughout I couldn't help thinking of fine art forgers, some even more talented than those artists whose work they were forging. Others even making a name for themselves as master forgers. In this light, Lee Israel certainly did so with writing as her genre and forte, and Melissa McCarthy impersonating her with her wonderfully natural acting skills doing a brilliant job as a type of human forger as well.
