There's a mismatch... (quote): "Kattegat is the name given to the large sea area situated between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden ... Sweden borders the Kattegat to the East, Denmark to the southwest, and Norway to the northwest". - No, that is incorrect. Norway does not border to Kattegat. Kattegat is located between Denmark and Sweden only. Northern limit of Kattegat can be drawn from Grenen at Skagen on the Danish east coast, to Marstrand on the Swedish west coast. Norway's maritime border runs along the midline between itself and its neighbouring countries, which means it delineates in the far northern area of Skagerrak. (i.e., Skagerrak completely separates Kattegat from Norway, by considerable distance). The mismatch is: while the descriptive text introduces Kattegat-bordering Danish/Swedish islands and cities, and attempts to tie in Kattegat with Norway - in reality Kattegat has no direct relation to Norway. Nevertheless, we see that at least 80% of the video is showing Norwegian mountains, fjords and coastline (even the video's front picture, titled "Kattegat homelands", is shot in Geiranger, north-west of Norway at 62nd parallel North, far away from Kattegat at 57th parallel North). When you are correcting the TV series, in the first place, why not use video shots from the east coast of Denmark and west coast of Sweden, instead? Although very different from the fjords and mountains of Norway, they are beautiful countries, too. That video would be just as great! :-)
Skagerack and Kattegatt have switched places from 1600 until 1800, then Kategatt finally was solid in between Denmark and Sweden, and the northern part outside the coast of Norway remained Skagerack.
@@michael_swardh Yes, its location is firmly between Denmark and Sweden - that is correct. But, switched places...? That just doesn't happen in the nautical world, due to navigation safety. And I cannot find anything to indicate that any switch of places/names has ever occured. Here are the arguments against: according to the Gyldendal's Den Store Danske (Danish Encyclopaedia), the name Kattegat (etymology: from Dutch language for "cat", and "hole/gate") was given its name already during Hanseatic sea trade traffic, year 1660. It comes from a (Dutch) mariner expression, to describe the sea area's direct connection to several narrow straits (e.g. Øresund, Samsøbælt, Saksild Bugt), metaphorically considered "cat gates", either of which any ship had to pass through to cross this sea area between Denmark and Sweden. Skagerrak got its descriptive name already in 1608 (etymology: geogr Schager/Skagen + rac/"even or straight waters", also from Dutch language) and is the complete oposite: it isn't narrow, at all. Neither has Skagerrak one or many transitions to narrow straits (no cat's gate nearby), only to open sea/straight waters. So, why would they call the wide Skagerrak area for Kattegat, or the narrow-ended Kattegat area for Skagerrak, in the first place? Also, neither the Danish Encyclopaedia nor any other source I've looked at mention anything about a switch of names, before or after the 17th century, as far as I have researched this matter... I am just curious: what have I missed? Do you have any reference to reliable sources that document the name switch, which I can look into? Thanks, mate!
@Sigvald Nielsen (or Lysefjord, as Lysebotn is the village). Thank you! I've never seen the TV series, as I don't care about fantasy. But calling a Norwegian fjord Kattegat (mixing West Norse, Norway, and East Norse, Denmark/Sweden) is just weird, because both their geography and cultures were quite different... Anyway, I started this thread as a simple comment to help them correcting an obvious (and embarrassing) factual error, made twice, in the ingress text of this RUclips video. The publisher doesn't care about correcting the text, so I'm not wasting anymore time here. Cheers!
@Sigvald Nielsen Indeed, from Dutch mariners of the 1600s, as I wrote 2 weeks ago. And I am 100% with you that a chaotic mix like this is silly. (I've heard some funny comments about the TV series...). A more stringent grip on history and facts would have given them the highest accolade, everywhere. What a waste of opportunity...
