- Amira Willighagen sings 'Ave Maria' during the Semi-Final of Holland's Got Talent and delivers another astounding performance which sees her progress to the Final on 28 December 2013.
This video is a combination of HD and non-HD components which is why there is a difference in the volume level. The actual performance is in HD with vastly superior sound and picture quality.

She is such a beautiful child, blessed with a beautiful voice. I am not a big fan of opera, but she sounds so beautiful, I can't help but get goose bumps when I hear Amira. I don't understand the dislikes either; some people are just plain miserable ... so sad.
amira has said that when she sings, she's not really aware of the audience, just being in the music. She doesn't feel like a little girl; it's just her and the music. It's a form of autohypnosis; her eyes are unfocused. At the end, she "snaps" out of it and is back. It's incredible!

As a singer for many years now, I can say she clearly knows how to control her voice. She does a lot of OPERA, hence the tendency towards more Vibrabratto. Honestly. Everyone's a Critic, or thinks they are. Why not just enjoy something truly exceptional and leave it at that: it's exceptional and so is the little lady :)
She's 9!! Well during this performance she was. How people can pick at faults is beyond me, clearly jealousy.

I am a senior and it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how wonderful, beautiful, amazing, fantastic, magnificent .... there will unfortunately always be someone to find fault. I read somewhere (more than one source) that Amira had a serious cold at one time, and that it was feared she would not be able to perform. This absolutely perfect performance of Ave Maria was probably sung at the tail end of her bad cold. Being a singer (for 65 years), I knew this to be the case. It is not easy to explain. For the highest notes, Amira slightly flared her nostrils. Her final cut-off of "amen" showed a very abbreviated N. Prolonging that sound during a cold would have disastrous and ugly effects. Amira showed lots of class and maturity in performing this song the way she did. There were other signs that Amira was singing through a cold, but they were less obvious than those stated. Amira showed a maturity well beyond her years in this performance. It is very difficult to learn how to sing through a cold, and many, if not most, singers never learn. Brava, Amira!

And it's not "amen" - the lyrics are in latin. It's "Ave".

Nobody will ever sing this song any better than this. Not even Amira. She was possessed during that song.

Yes, Mister Cointreau. Somehow I feel she is "possessed" every time she sings one of her Ave Maria's. She now has five of them in her repertoire. Virgin Maria seems to mean something VERY SPECIAL to her, I think.

This couldn't happen in America's Got Talent. I feel like the general American public wouldn't have the attention span to listen to opera arias every week. This isn't meant to offend anyone, but I've just found that European audiences are generally more appreciative of classical music. Also, take a look at the view counts on RUclips for classical vs. pop music. It's crazy.
Well, there was and is Jackie Evancho who took second on America's Got Talent a few years ago. She clearly should have won and the guy she lost to has not had near the success that Jackie has. Look at her wikipedia and see her history and story of success. They do not strictly do the same style, as Amira is more opera and Jackie neo classical. That is why I like Jackie more because I am not a big opera person. Also, I think Amira is just a bit younger when they made their respective talent show appearances and I think it is a fruitless exercise to compare them. Unless Amira gets a industry giant like David Foster to back her like Jackie did, she probably won't become as famous and maybe opera does not sell as much today as the neo classical.
girlsingerfan Well Jackie Evancho does classical crossover (not neo-classical). That's not to say classical crossover is bad, but people that join that genre generally gain more success because it is easier to listen to. Jackie had to add a lot of "pop-like" elements to her vocal performances in order to keep the attention of voters and advance in the competition. Since then, she has mostly stopped performing operatic arias.
apparently you dont know what your talking about, first of all the cultures are different. i am a musician by heart and listen to all kinds of music. Opera is one of my favorites, unless you know what your talking about i wouldn't be labeling people, never mind an entire country. This girl is amazing and i have never heard anything like it. She is very blessed and she will go far. Way to go young Amira. You have an American fan here for sure.

She shows so much passion when she sings she looks wiser than her years but turns straight back into a cute little girl as soon as she stops. Re-incarnation?? Makes you wonder.
She says herself in a later video that when she sings on stage, she is not a little girl anymore, she feels like a grown-up. That is the impression I also have.

i feel so sorry for anyone who doesnt feel this----shes a miracle!!!! i am a rock drummer for my entire life---ive been saying for the last few years that id love to see someone (or a band) just blow me away---and then i click onto Amira---and i ball like a baby--and proud of it---i dont even know what shes singing!!!!! but i know that the voice that comes out of this little girl is beyond amazing!!! i am humbled by the fact that it took a 9 year old girl-halfway around the world---singing opera---to blow me away like never before!

I came back to this performance, and am fascinated by the transformation at 2:45 when she finishes the song and comes out of her 'performance trance' and turns back into a living person, little girl again. It's amazing how she 'becomes' the song. And she continues to do this even currently in many performances. It's like she becomes a different person. In my opinion she is definitely the greatest 'child' performer, and will only get better. There are several young opera/popera performers now: Jackie Evanko; Emanne Beasha; Laura Bretan; and a few others, but Amira has that certain quality in her voice the reaches the soul, and can bring tears to thousands in a performance.

This young girl has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.
When one sees 2.4 k thumbs down, one can see what this modern so call music has done to the brain of those who listen to it. For a 9 year old to have this quality of vocal quality without any formal training is amazing. Keep listening to you booming, loud noise, but don’t be critical of real talent.

The quality of her voice, the range (low notes like callas), the tone, breath control, the control on her florituras. God rhis girl is really amazing.

The breath control actually wasn't, and her diction is a little "off" - but for a kid with no training (and coming off a bad head cold), it's unbelievable.
Heard any of her more recent stuff? Almost all grown up now, she's learned breath control to support the contralto register without losing the glorious coloratura top notes, her once-stilted phrasing is now smooth, her diction clear and still has the guileless purity in her voice - thank God for Dutch and South African law that went a long way to preventing burnout.
She's also a philanthropist as well as arguably the most promising soprano this century - her Stichting Gelükskinders (Lucky Children's Foundation) was entirely her own idea, building playgrounds for underprivileged children in her new country, South Africa (her mother is South African born, Amira moved there with her after her parents divorced).
May God Almighty protect this beautiful child from fame and the ravages of the "entertainment" industry.

The joy of watching this is amazing. It is the end of her recital when she give the facial expression of an innocent 9yr old girl who has no idea what she has just done. I now believe in miracles because it does not seem possible that a 9yr old can watch opera on RUclips and teach themselves, not only the language, but to sing it so beatifully.
When she sings Maria. Callas's spirit takes her. When she stops she is a little girl again! There is a 3 year old Japanese boy who plays the piano and he becomes an old spirit as well.

All due respect but I have yet to hear an "American superstar" who could sing Ave Maria like that. Gonna let my British reserve drop here and say without doubt she is the most astounding voice I have heard since Callas. Truly truly amazing. Got your album now and am being entranced by it.

I'm amazed at some of the "armchair" amateur critics criticising this wonderful talent. Her "Italian" pronunciation is not very good because the song is in Latin, which is a dead language and there is no known pronunciation. She may have "fluffed" a few words, so what ! I could listen to her all day "fluffing" her way through the Amsterdam telephone book. Bravo, Amira

I look at her mouth and throat as she sings with that power. It is not possible that that voice is produced by what I am seeing. Not possible. Absolutely not her voice. Someone else is inside her. Some say she is one in a million. I think one in a billion. If you didn't believe in God's power before hearing this, I'm sure you do now. I see magic tricks that blow my mind and wonders of nature and strange coincidences that defy logic. But this girl parts the seas of trouble and we all pass to safety.

Love this kid. When she sings it's all business and what a voice. When the song is over- she is a 9 year old kid again waving at fans and being goofy (see the final episode). Let her sing and share her voice with the world, but also let her be a kid.

Every time I watch her my eyes fill up with tears.
It is not just her voice, but her eyes, that show all the emotional expression throughout the song. So much emotions at the age of nine. It is amazing.
I love her, and her voice reaches deep down to the corners of my heart. I wish her to succeed in life and if she ever will be in concert tour I will defiantly, go see her, and buy the CD as soon as it is available Talents like this need support.

I've watched her video's a great many times and I still cannot believe what I hear and see. She's magnificent. Truly hits some of the most beautiful notes ever. Each video posted she becomes a better, stronger and more accomplished vocalist. I hope she continues to want to sing opera on stage and legit voice concerts.

It's tempting to think that Amira unnaturally "yelled" her HGT performances - I thought that at first. But I quickly realized later that her strong soulful voice is real, and she probably couldn't throttle it back even if she tried. That and her total command of her highest notes are what set her apart and above all other young aria-type singers. Sure there are the Jackies of the world who excel in many types of music, but Amira stands alone in her realm. 2:02 to 2:15 - how can anyone, adult or child, compare to this?

You nailed it...among her many outstanding features, it is her command of the high notes that continues (see "Amazing Grace", 2017) to set her apart.
When I die I want to see and hear angels sing like that at my funeral. Pity that I won't be alive to hear and see anything but this is the next best thing.
For a girl so young to have so much power and control in her voice is phenominal. It could be said thre is no other voice like it in the world today and to think it will only get stronger.

I was 77 Oct 4 and was raised on a farm near Holland, VA and was amazed by Amira's Hollanf's Got Talent audition and finals winner in 2013! Not only does she have a beautiful voice and great talent, but poise to completely handle performances! What a gifted talenr she us!

I keep watching this over and over. The purity is unbelievable. And after delivering such a flawlessly beautiful performance that almost convinces this old atheist that there are angels, she gives that cheeky little smile as if it's just another playground game. Amazing little girl.

For those 59 viewers who voted this down....You just don't realize what power and pain a singer goes through to reach these higher octaves and to hold the notes. For a young child to "channel" this type of sound is just an awesome feat in any language and in any setting. This young girl has a great future ahead of her. Amira is wonderful!

Gerald Weg A couple more which fit in with what she's already sung to go on the list of possibles: Puccini - Turandot - Senore Ascolta, about 2 minutes, would nicely show her ability to get her notes cleanly, but not over taxing, and another by Handel - Rinaldo - Lascia qu'io pianga.3-1/2 minutes ( and perhaps Fincent could play the violin part in the middle, as in the Hayley Westenra version.) Mood of both reflective, some good versions on RUclips. Her voice coach could check if they would be OK - then it's up to her if she likes them. Cheers,

Actually it's because my real computer is in for repair, so I have had to use an old steam-powered lap- top, which is so slow my choice of site is dictated by patience rather than design.
