Buck and Case both make great knives. Both companies also produce USA versions.
Both companies also produce lower entry level versions and higher end versions with better materials
I think the point the Knife Doctor makes is that Case does not really offer a more modern style of knife that is more affordable for the average worker.
I can specifically say that Bucks warranty service is the best hands down.
If you send your knife in for a spa treatment it will come back as a show piece. If you break the blade from abuse Buck does not refuse to replace the blade or charge the customer an exorbitant amount of $

I gave up on case when I was a teenager. Bought one and it had a crappy heat treat. Bought an Old Timer and loved it ( early 70s) . A couple of years later I thought I’d give Case another try. Same result. I stayed with Old Timer. I’d been sharpening my knives since I was 7yrs old. It was a mandatory requirement from my Dad. As for Buck knives , I’ve only had a few folders but none of their slip joints. I’ve had some of their fixed blades and they’ve been good knives. Case , in my opinion, has turned themselves into a collector’s knife company. They’re way too expensive.

Case does make really good knives, but not as in the past IMO. Case quality control is at times less than desireable and customer service can be as well. I agree you get a lot of bang for the buck...no pun intended...with a Buck. The Buck slimline 112 and 110 are pretty darn good knives. Another great video! God Bless!

It's funny but people do change their taste over time..... I was always a modern folder type person. When my Dad carried a LB7, I had a Gerber Gator and few years later I switched to a Spyderco Delica which has been my main EDC going on 25yrs.... I have many others and carried them to try out but I come back to the Delica. For me its the right combination of cost, decent steel, performance and fit. Buck was always "old" design stuff to me... the 110, 119 ect.... much like my Dads Uncle Henry LB7. Honesty these Spitfire appear to be very similar to the Delica in design and execution.... I'm glad to see them trying newer designs even tho its still pretty old.... anyway about changing taste. I still carry a Delica.... I now carry a Streamlight microstream usb also as my main EDC... but I have recently taken to dropping a gentleman's single blade slipjoint like a Boker Club or Case Trapper single blade in my left pocket.... you learn to appreciate different things with time and age

my thoughts about 420hc , they switched to 420hc from 440c ( back when 440c was the super steel of the time ) when Paul Bos perfected his cryogenic heat treat method ( which everybody now uses not just Buck ) because it gave 420hc almost the same edge retention and toughness as 440c (non cryo heat treat ) which is a mute point cause EVERYONE uses cryo heat treating now. It may be easier to sharpen , easier to dull as well and then when you think about the life time of the knife you will buy 2 -3 of those Buck spitfires in the lifespan of 1 knife with s35vn blade steel.

    • @theknifedoctor
      @theknifedoctor  6 месяцев назад +1

Thanks for sharing this. I don’t think so. I still have old knives that’s been around 100 years. Just good old carbon steel. I think all this SUPER STEEL is over hyped for sales. I don’t need a pry bar, I need an Affordable knife I can use everyday. I’ll put the Spitfire up against any Brand of knife.

I also have about 25 Buck knives and all except 3 or 4 are EDC. Case and some of the other companys like Benchmade have got to stop with their high price bullshit. I don't own a Benchmade because if they don't care to make a decent knife that everyone can afford then I'm not going to back them and I have well over 250 knives - later

Case XX folding pocket knives to me are the best in collection knives. They always will be because of their quality and being famously known for decades. They hold their value and are desired by many. If I was to buy a new EDC it would be Buck over Case XX. I don't buy Case XX new for EDC. I prefer to buy good used Case XX for that. I don't spend lots of money on EDC. It's simply because I plan to use them for everyday brutal usage. I don't buy junk knives for everyday use either. I will buy a decent low quality product for a specific job. That means I don't care if I break it. That's just me being me. I don't abuse a good well made knife. I have collections, I have EDC, and I have job knives. 😂😊✌🏼👍🏻

Most of them are even made better. The CJRB Pyrite and Civivi Elementum are way better than what most budget US companies could put out. In the end, it doesn’t matter where they’re made. case will never go and do what buck does I think most case knifes are over priced buck has always have some great knifes for a great price the 110 is a great example a knife thats copyed by everyone they still around 65 dollars and the spitfire another example case has collectors and such and still uses true sharp surgical pretty basic for a knife that will you be charged 70 to 90 dollars for and most of there pocket knifes are to small anyway I generally use something that is about the size of the spitfire or larger 4inch handles don't get me wrong I have some case floding hunters coke bottle hunter large soddys and such but case's tend to dull pretty fast bucks 420 is better basic steel but your right buck does have some quality knifes for around 50 dollars I think case watched as alot of usa companies went under in the last 20 years and they are taking advantage of it and they are following the trend of Benchmade and others raising their prices and people bought into the premium steel so called super steels alot of these companies could do what buck has done but with inflation I've noticed alot of knife companies coming out with budget lines with better steels and handle materials so that's good but thats why I'll continue to buy buck knifes and alot less case and the others that took advantage love what you're doing saving old knifes the charitys I'm a vet myself us army during the 80s spent some time in Korea and fort dixs new jersey so thank you for your service I subscribed when you had about 300 subscribers hung out ever scents you seem like good o'boy best of luck with everything doc and I'll be looking for some old knifes to save their lives

U.S.A. made all day long! Buck, Case or GEC. I just prefer knives made in the U.S.A. Stainless steel for cutlery use came about in 1915. Prior to that plain carbon steels built this country and many of those knives used in that making are still around. Utica and Case were there making those knives before 1915. I understand many men prefer stainless steel. They want the latest greatest steel, handle materials and newest technology in knives. Nothing wrong with it at all. In my older age I have a shorter tolerance for nonsense and flashiness. I just think a knife or firearm should be made to do it's intended purpose in the most efficient and simplest way available. Everything else is nothing more than a useless waste of time and efforts with no real purpose or useful reasons. All that being said a knife should be made for its intended purpose to cut. Any man that can't or won't maintain his belongings for this conversation his knife, well he's just a lazy man and probably has no business owning a knife in the first place. For me carbon steel is still the "King steel". Sky scraper buildings, Automobiles, Airplanes and all military grade equipment have been using plain carbon steels since time in memorial. 1095 is still the best cutlery steel for "dependable" "durable" knives whether they are fixed blade or pocket knives. If my life is dependent upon the knife I choose then I'm choosing one that's time tested and NONSENSE FREE! My advice to any man is to be competent. Don't be lazy. Take care of your firearms and knives and they'll take care of you.

Knives are great, still the four of these knives you just payed for is about what I receive from the Government for my social security to live on for a month?

Try the Modern Folders. I agree. I’ve never been impressed with the old Traditional knives if Buck.

I don't know if any of you younger guys remember when the Buck knife logo depicted cutting a steel bolt with a Buck knife and a hammer. The slogan was "we don't recommend using your knife to cut a bolt but it is capable of doing it". A knife is made for cutting. I have broken my fair share of knife tips in my 76 years of being around but it has always been done when I was missing the knife. No matter how good or how cheap it was. There is a reason that they sell hatchets, punches and screwdrivers. Still enjoying your videos Doc, keep up the good work.

I love my USA made Buck 112s, got a pile of em to prove it. I don't buy the 420HC anymore (nothing wrong with it) and get the S30V from the custom shop.

Sending it back to Buck for the lifetime warranty helps mitigate our “miss-steps” with our blades. Has worked well for me, even when the “hickie” was obviously my fault!

Bucks are nice 😊 But, I just can't choose one over Case XX 🤔🫡✌🏼👍🏻 The reason you said about Buck not changing for a long time. That's my thoughts as well. I'm your age as you know 1970 born. But, they are coming to be a more favorable choice for sure....😊
