  • Stylish? Sinister? Muscular? Stealth? Extravagant? The Mercedes 560 SEC AMG 'wide body' is all of this, and more! However, not the art of understatement.This original, AMG-built car, comes with the 6,0l engine upgrade and is perfect inside out. Japanese vehicle. Blue black metallic, black leather. Power in abundance. Simply stunning and extremely rare. The eighties are back!

    The German and Japanese coupés from the 80s and 90s were just sick. Mercedes, Nissan, Acura, BMW. The aesthetics still hold up.

      I agree. The designs have aged well. While I admittedly preferred the purity of the 560 SEC lines when I was a kid, I now see and appreciate the work that AMG put into these cars.

    • @petrolheadclassics
      @petrolheadclassics  2 года назад +3

      Yes, RM achieved an amazing result. Yet, the three sales before that achieved $160,000 - $200,000. Why this spread? Well, the car now sold by RM was low-mileage and came with full documentation. Low mileage and great provenance will always increase value. The lower results were for car in the 80,000-100,000 km range and presumably without much documentation. You also need a bit of luck and at least two persons, who want the car at the auction. An American business partner was present at the RM record sale and was surprised at the result. Apparently a great car and many bidders. Happy for the seller. So, it's complex and many factors to take into consideration. Thank you for viewing and commenting!

    The review was very simple to understand and that made it cool to watch.
    My main concern is why wasn’t the 560 SEC AMG widebody sorted in manual?
    Seeing that auto-box makes it Incomplete in my eyes.

    • @zulusmith
      @zulusmith 3 года назад +1

      Per the video, customers purchased the vehicle from Mercedes and then sent it to AMG for further modification. So we can assume they didn't want a manual.

    • @petrolheadclassics
      @petrolheadclassics  3 года назад +4

      Thank you for your feedback and happy to hear that you enjoyed the video!
      As for the gearbox, you would need to address Mercedes on this one, since the 560 SEC came with automatic gearboxes only. Probably very few manuals could handle the torque of the engine. Someone mentions that AMG once converted a 560 SEC 'wide body' to manual for a UAE customer, using a 190 E 2.3-16 gearbox, but I haven't been able to confirm it.

    • @petrolheadclassics
      @petrolheadclassics  3 года назад +2

      @@zulusmith Correct. And as outlined below, these cars came with auto only. Whether the conversion of one car to manual was actually done, I haven't been able to verify.

    • @1anre
      @1anre 3 года назад +2

      @@petrolheadclassics ah I see.
      Ironically, one would’ve expected a Manual gearbox due to it fluidity being able to better handle higher torque than a robotic auto-box, but Merc favored the latter.
      I trust BMW, they’d have found a way to make a similar powerplant work flush with a manual stick.

    • @petrolheadclassics
      @petrolheadclassics  3 года назад +2

      @@1anre I agree with you and a manual gearbox would have suited the cars sporty credentials. I believ the reason is simply that there was no manual gearbox available to handle the torque of the 5.6l and 6.0l engines.

    The original (pre Mercedes merger) W126 AMG SEC Widebody didn't have Aero I as on this car, but had ATS Germany made AMG Penta wheels, front 16 x 9J zero offset, rear 16 x 10 Et 12.7 minus. For his SEC widebody re creation, a buddy got a next to impossible to find set from Australia. AMG Beverly Hills and the other on the East coast may have assembled some widebody SEC's as well. These builds stopped when Daimler-Benz aka Mercedes bought AMG.

    • @teutone5866

      Pre Mercedes - AMG merger, a number of larger Mercedes & AMG dealers were authorized to build wide body cars, quite a few coming out of Japan (they did interesting things utilizing M119 heads). There were AMG Beverly Hills (where the later RennTech founder Hartmut Feyhl worked in their AMG shop, two others from this AMG shop are still active around L.A., one in Sylmar, the other in Conejo Valley), I believe another was in Chicago, plus one on the East Coast, also one in the UK. I know Henrik quite well, and am acquainted with the process of building his widebody, as well as his later participation in the Wheeler-Dealer SEC widebody recreation build. To me, a widebody SEC, whether original AMG or a later re creation needs to have either the 5.4L or 6.0 AMG engine.
