Many years ago, I read this quote from an American pioneer woman about quilts. "We made them as fast as we could so that we wouldn't freeze to death, and as beautiful as we could so that we wouldn't lose our minds." It brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it. Thank you, Carlos & Arne, for this lovely video.
There was a memoir called The Quilt from a man who visited his Scandinavian grandparents on isolated farms in Northern Minnesota as a boy in the days people traveled in wagons. When the women gathered for a birth or death they brought a community quilt with pieces of clothing from people who had died. As they sewed each piece they shared stories of that person.
The Salvation Army here had a 75% off sale on their wedding, and prom dresses. I bought them all. Now I know how to cut them up and use them in quilting. Thank you.
You are such kind people, and humble, a lot of people would have been very mean to the friend for spilling something on a dress you designed , not you two-true old world manners and gentlemen. I enjoy your down to earth peaceful videos so much, thank you
I just noticed that this video was from 2 years ago! I wish I had a friend with whom to collaborate on pretty blocks like this. I have really enjoyed watching this crazy quilt block come together.
I make what we call fidget quilts for dimentia patients with this technique. As I sew, I add trinkets, ribbons, yarn and fabric with different textures. They are finished about 20 inch square. Dimentia and Alzheimer’s patients get very agitated and they love these little quilts to fondle.
I got married during the pandemic in Dec 2020 at the age of 40, after accepting I probably would never get married. But after a whirlwind 6 week engagement, my soulmate and I married. Up until now I wasn’t sure what to do with my wedding dress, but now I know and am going to make a couple of patchwork cushions for our bed. Thank you for the inspiration and enabling me to do something with my dress to keep the memory.
I love the look of your wall with those old looking for plates. I think I'm from another planet, I love everything and tend to hoard. I mean everything! God help me, heaven has to be so beautiful.
I had already decided to use my wedding dress to make a quilt. It's been in a suitcase for 25 years. If I make a quilt, then it will be useful rather than a bit of clutter. My wedding dress's skirt is a soft white satin, and the bodice is lavender satin, with a soft white lace jacket. The year after I married, my brother married, and I made a soft purple skirt from a fabric that looks like raw silk. Then about 5 years ago, I made a deep purple dress for a friend's wedding. It is also satin, but I used the 'wrong side' rather than the shiny. These three wedding outfits will form the basis of my quilt. I'll add a load of lace too. Thank you. I would never have thought to use these old clothes in this way.
I love this tutorial. I did something similar many years ago (in the 90s) using scraps from various sewing projects (including my wedding dress). I used a bright thread and a fancy zigzag over the seams to try to tie it together. It has become a UFO but I do have several squares completed. I think I need to pull it out and finish it! Thanks for the inspiration!
I always wanted to make a crazy quilt but spent way too much time over-thinking it and never did make one. Thank you both for enabling me to just go with the flow and enjoy the trip! What fun it was to watch and listen to you create such a lovely square. So much fun! Can hardly wait to begin mine...
This is the first time I have watched these two gentlemen and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I am a lover of Crazy Quilting and these two have enticed me into getting into my fabric stash and getting creative!!! I subscribed to their channel and plan on watching more of their creativity!! Thank you two so very much!!! Judy
All I needed is for the two of you to lead me down another rabbit hole.😂😂 Wonderful tutorial. Although I have made several quilts, quilting is not my "thing". But I am so eager to create a crazy quilt now! Love the concept of one square at a time. Thank you!
I love when Carlos talks about your carrier, as " our" carrier! That's what so many families should do! There's so many couple's that don't work together! It's very refreshing to here something like that!!!God bless your family!!
I love quilts but have stayed away due to the precision that seemed to be required to complete one. You both have opened a whole new world of thought on this issue. So much fun to watch the beautiful creation that was made from just scraps. I love the free form....I was never able to color within the lines.... Thank you for such an enjoyable podcast.
The “thumbs up” button isn’t strong enough for my feelings about this video. I need a “LOVE” button. I am absolutely itching to get my sewing machine out to start making a crazy quilt right now. Thank you!
This has really made things more accessible to me. I have difficulty reading patterns and have stalled with quilting because of this. Thank you so much. I love your whole vibe, inspiring!
Oh my goodness!! I have the exact same sewing machine! I bought it in 1974 and still use it to this day and it runs beautifully! Your quilt is darling!! I love watching you guys! Thanks !!
I was married in 1968 and had my dress cleaned and sealed and haven't looked at it since then. I'm going to get it out of the attic and cut it and make something pretty to lay across the foot of my bed. Why not enjoy something new that will bring back old wonderful memories. Thanks for all your inspiration.
Crazy quilting is a lot of fun! I love that with quilting as for so many other crafts; there is a style to suit everyone. You can be measured and detailed. Geometric, abstract, curvy, whatever you like! I’m glad that a lot of quilters will now be enjoying your videos, and I’m sure there’ll be more like me who enjoy a range of crafts. As you do! I found you because I was looking for knitting, and was so glad to find you because I also love embroidery, gardening, cooking, crochet, sewing etc etc! There really is something for everyone :)
The wedding dress comment made me giggle. I made my own wedding dress back in the 80's. Then I cut it up and made the most shabby chic tea cosies imaginable.
While I have never quilted, I have always wanted to make a crazy quilt using velvet bits and doing embroidery over. Thank you for teaching us and boosting our confidence to try!
What I enjoy about watching your videos besides all of the contents is the kindness and respect you show to each other! And all of this sprinkled with laughter and humor. Love you and thanks!
I just started a crazy quilt after watching this video. I'm using old fabric I inherited from my great grandma. It's so fun! Honestly, more enjoyable than doing things by the book. :)
thank you so so much. I quilt and have trouble following quilting patterns. I have been creating my own blocks and thinking I was doing things wrong. You have convinced me that it is ok to go on my own path. I appreciated your approach so much. From an loving fan Kathleen
Thank you! The hesitation is gone, heading to thrift shops and hoping that fabric store has embellishments as beautiful as your treasures... Smiling and waving from Nova Scotia, Canada ....
Love this technique with all the delicate fabrics and love this video. I used to make wedding dresses and formal wear and have saved some of my fabrics for just such a purpose. I do string quilts now like my mother used to do, but thank you for inspiring me to get my fabrics out.
Waw! This turned out really beautifull! I'm never going to throw awy any leftovers :) I was a bit sceptic at first, because I'm a bit of a strict person, I mostly follow the rules. But this is so lovely, that i'm going to try it too. I hope my husband will assist me for the ironing :D . I've got a lot of fabrics laying in my closet, because I regularly sew for my grandchildren and I used to sing operetta and sew the clothes... I'll start as soon as my knitting is finished :) . Thank you very very much for this (again) very educational tutorial... waiting for the next one. Love you guys :)
Love the block , the quilt will be beautiful. I have made Christmas stockings using that method. I am a hand quilter, I have made a few. I just like the the process of hand quilting....it’s calming. Have a great evening.
I loved to watch the. Creativty so enlightening. Thanks for showing your BEAUTIFUL square.I wish you could Make bags with that .beaded fabric, so very BEAUTIFUL
I'm sure you could use the same technique and fabrics of your own choice to construct enough base material to make any number of bags. It would work as though you were designing your own fabric for your own creations, yes? That's what I would do anyway. *now hunting down amazingly beaded fabrics* :-)
I never knew about sewing the patches down to a backing fabric. I wondered how you sew all those shapes together. Now, I know and am really looking forward to the next video. Thank you for showing this.
What a clever way to do make quilts and you use up all the scraps always learning new things from you guys thanks you Arne .Love to see the end results.xx
I love the fact that you use tools like most of us have and not the state of the art perfect tools.. like dull scissors and a kitchen towel for a press cloth. Also doing it on a regular dining table. It's encouraging to see you guys "making do" with what you have. I was raised with the mindset of "Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.". Times are not that difficult for me as that, but I still don't like wasting anything. I have my grandmother and my mother's clothes. I have a memory quilt that my mother hand pieced with my grandmother's dresses, that were cotton. It is grandmother's fan. I think a crazy quilt is a perfect idea for me to make with my mother's clothes as they are not all cotton. Mixed fabric will be great on a crazy quilt. Thank you, I learn alot from you two! Great personalities that are enjoyable to watch also!
I am just so very glad I found you. Again, you have helped inspire me AND everytime I watch you two, I always feel confident I can do my own travel in creating something beautiful. I really appreciate your sharing your enthusiasms.. and you two are, bonus, entertaining, to watch.
Those scissors! You poor soul! Yes, Arne, I hope you do go back to sewing!! It is so inspirational and instructive watching the two of you do this. The teamwork and conversation between you two imparts such fun! I would love to see a video where both of you sit and just play with your beautiful fabrics and show us what lovely things happen from "no plan at all" and working together. Today so many quilts are made with such painstaking plan and precision; but the antique method of crazy quilting is so gorgeous and freeing. And I'm most definitely looking forward to the follow-up to this tutorial!!
Hello Arne and Carlos. Just found your how to do Crazy Quilt Square. I watched your video last week and this square was my "Favourite". The colours are beautiful. Adding the lace makes a feminine vintage look. Lovely. Thank You to you both for another enjoyable video.
Wow this is beautiful ! And I love that cotton pink you use to fill in at the end and it would be easier to sew together on other blocks ! Ty for sharing !
I don’t know how I came upon you video, except I was looking for a beautiful and easy method of reducing my stash. You guys WIN for the best creation of a crazy quilt, a step above the others. Thank you.
Love it!!!!! You both make it interesting in each other video that you post not just with the projects but with the way you guys present it. Especially love listening to u guys talk 😊 waiting for the next to get posted!!
Such a pleasure to watch you two work. I’m excited to not pass up all those ragged garments and linens at the thrift stores that have sections of beautiful fabric remaining! Your method is something I can do❤ Thanks 🌸
Thank you, Arne and Carlos! As always I am so happy to be learning a way to make something beautiful and not „the only right way“. I think any child would love a crazy quilt exactly because of the stories in the fabric. The ones actually remembered like „this is from the fabric/garment of...“ and the ones just made up because they look at the fabrics and think about dragon scales, princess dresses, like to touch of this one, see a treasure in that one..... I remember doing this a lot as a kid with a blanket or rug somebody made. You are truly inspiring and always helping me to remember that a hobby like knitting or sewing should be fun and beautiful not a showcase of how I followed all the rules. ❤️
Very fun, Arne and Carlos! I’ve read that this technique of creating a quilted block is called a “crumb” block - sewing random scrappy pieces together onto a backing piece. It’s also a bit of a “Quilt as you Go”, except that technique is usually done by sewing pieces onto a batting square, and sometimes even onto a batting and backing fabric “sandwich”. 😊
So happy to have found ur channel and ur easygoing approach to art and creativity! I m not a ” precision person” and I do love ur quotes like ” it quilts itself”, ”when in doubt add some embroidery”, and ur discussion about not being too afraid to put scissors into beautiful fabrics!!! Maybe a mad artist like myself finally finds a way into quilting now....thank u from Sweden
I started watching your Knitted Christmas Balls and ended up watching you both embellishing your crazy quilts. You have really good taste and appreciation for beautiful and vintage textiles. You have definitely inspired me. I've been wanting to make something special with the things my relatives have left me and you have shown me so many ideas to make special pieces for my children. Loving your videos and I've subscribed!
Watching this makes me want to go into my sewing room and get creative!! Thank you so much for the inspiration. BTW: I ordered materials to start making some idea books. So excited to start all these projects you inspire us to try! Thank you both so much, and the rest of the team as well. Hi to Freja! 🐶💕
I luv the randomness. I have so many scraps as I throw nothing away. Now I know what I can do with them. I don’t quilt, but I can make scrap pillows for the holidays.
I finally understand how to get started on a quilt. I know for many people it’s easy, but i just couldn’t get the hang of it until now. So thank you guys for doing this! Can’t wait for the next part. I’m already collecting fabrics 😍😊
Watching this has been mind boggling for me. I quilt, but each piece fits and is cut carefully and done by the book. I end up with lovely quilts but watching you both has made me realise that I can just go for it and have a ball with all my little gorgeous pieces. I have made a crazy quilt with velvet scraps but I still used a methodical approach. I am going to go crazy and do what you are doing for my next quilt so thank you heaps. I love you both
Anne Pickard You. are right Anne, the colours they use are gorgeous together. I love colour but it takes a special talent to just pick up bits of fabric and have them look amazing together. I love that they both just give their ideas and tips away so freely. They are my hero’s of creativity.
Arne and Carlos your square is really fantastic! Freedom is what we need more in crafts... getting older I seem to have lost some of it! But you have inspired me and the fact that you iron every seem is so good. Thank you for showing us how to be free.... Please keep up the wonderful work. Anita from South Africa
Adore you two guys!! This is a treat to watch. Sometimes I’d wonder at your choices but then watching the magical reveal when it was sewn and ironed and it worked! Fabulous.
I love the idea of using left over fabrics as Ive got piles of materials but the labour involves I'm 81 yrs now with a very clear vision I use to sew a lot for my family and neighbors n friends at the moment I am knitting and chroteting it is more comforting then I don't have to be on my feet a lot I watch your programs on a regular basis I am buying wool from my pension money n can only afford acrilic wool as give away all. My compleld products as gifts to the people I love I would appreciate if you could help me with left ower wool that you don't use I am from Cape Town SA and is facianated by you two it give s me so much joy to watch you both cooking and all your scills especially during the covid onse again thank you for your programs Mrs Kamalie from Grassy Park My husband died 12 yrs ago of cancer so I got lots of time n is hooked on your programs
You two made me realize that I need an "Ironing Assistant". How awesome to do things together. I am always creating solo. What blessings you both are and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your circle. I noticed that your ironing cloth is thicker than what I use.... I have never used anything that thick actually. Is there a secret regarding this? Also noticed you have a thicker cushion on the ironing board. MY HEART SANK AND I SUCKED IN ENOUGH AIR FROM HERE TO CHINA when you cut that sequenced fabric onto the solid blue. ............ my swan.......my lungs hurt! You are so brave Arne ! I want to give my special gratitude for this crazy square idea. My dearest great grandmother passed away three years ago and I could not part with any of her clothes. So now... this project will be perfect for an heirloom quilt made with her clothes. And there is enough that I can make quilts for generations to come....thank you thank you. (Sorry I wrote a book).
Hi Arne and Carlos, wow love the white crazy quilt it's so beautiful so is the new one with the pretty colors. You guys are so talented and always make great tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and have a wonderful week. Francine
Wonderful I have loads of Christmas fabrics.I used my wedding dress to make a princess dress for my granddaughter so have lots of bits of that left as well stay safe
One of the best workshops ever, I have made up my own crazy quilt about 40 years ago and I did it by pinning the pieces on a huge polished cotton backdrop. It was so unwieldy to work with but my bucket list is to do another and this approach is perfect. I want to say what excellent intuitive teachers you are because you anticipate my questions and answer them without my asking as you go along, which increases my ability to concentrate and watch closely without buzzing thoughts in my head. Arne's art of placement is exquisite and your camaraderie and collaboration ..... well I just plain envy. You are so fortunate to have each other and to share that delight with us! Namaste.
Such wonderful creativity. You guys make me want to drag out my sewing machine and my mother’s old formal dresses from the 40s from the dark depths of the closet to make a quilt like this.
I LOVE crazy quilts and my bucket list includes making one some day. I am a novice when it comes to sewing and have always been intimidated by textbook quilting. This clip makes me feel like I could do this without being fearful. I love all of your work. Your patterns and colours are inspiring! I have inherited a crazy quilt (approx 90 yrs old!) that this square reminds me of. Some of the fabrics are starting to deteriorate but watching this i think i could actually repair it. Thanks so much!
I have never seen a book that is THE way to do a quilt. I started learning about quilting in the 1940s from my grandmother and the ladies who came to quilt. Quilting is one more type of handwork that is handed down and learned by hands on teaching. Now we worry about the proper way to do these things. Then it was a way to express yourself. As designers, you get to be the experts and can advocate whatever you wish.
Always a pleasure to watch/listen to you while knitting my first top. 45 min period knitting, now a break before going back to try to piece a "by the book" quilt for class. I'm currently taking a free continuing education class at the Community College here in San Diego but my goal is to use all those scraps to create new fabric and imporvise new stories. Following the dream of my desorganized thoughts and you guys are a huge inspiration to accept the crazy process of creation. Take care, can't wait to follow your workshop on knit star 3.0.
This is very delicate and so pretty I always see crazy quilts very dark and heavy looking and I had no interest in making them , but this one ill make. Thank you
Many years ago, I read this quote from an American pioneer woman about quilts. "We made them as fast as we could so that we wouldn't freeze to death, and as beautiful as we could so that we wouldn't lose our minds." It brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it. The poor Ukranian refugees are freezing to death. They need these quilts.
@@ARNECARLOS Arne your English is so good, you have improved one hundred percent.
A crazy patchwork quilt typically brings back memories of time and people. Lovely job guys.... it allows a place of honor for these pieces 💕
The Salvation Army here had a 75% off sale on their wedding, and prom dresses. I bought them all. Now I know how to cut them up and use them in quilting. Thank you.

Love love that happy quilting 🇦🇺🤔🥰
Happy quilting is the word. 🇳🇴
I just noticed that this video was from 2 years ago! I wish I had a friend with whom to collaborate on pretty blocks like this. I have really enjoyed watching this crazy quilt block come together.
Thank you for watching!
Reminds me of my grandma, her crazy patchwork quilts were always spontaneous like that. It's artistically freeing.
Getting addicted watching Arne & Carlos :0)
I agree with Anusha, love to watch them and I am addicted to watching them. I just love them. 😊
I am also addicted! ❤️👍

They're made for Autistic children, too. Their "sensory quilts" can also be aids for learning to do buttons, shoelaces, zippers, etc.

Crazy quilt patch work..........something new I learned today. 😃🥰
Glad to be of service!
Boy I am just binge watching….I don’t knit but I LOVE ART JOURNALING and junk journaling and stitch8ng and quilting!!,❤️❤️❤️

I love to see people creating together. The act of bringing feeling, emotion, and vision into being is remarkable.
Well said

You are welcome, thank you for watching!
Love! Love! Love! Look out I'm going to get my scrap boxes!!!😉
Fascinating! I could watch you two all day!
really looking forward to the next episode! :)
I don’t know how I came upon you video, except I was looking for a beautiful and easy method of reducing my stash. You guys WIN for the best creation of a crazy quilt, a step above the others. Thank you.
It is so great getting ideas/inspiration in your videos for creative ideas, but also ideas for reusing/repurposing items!
Your method is something I can do❤
Thanks 🌸
You are welcome!!
love this video
If you use a piece of batting and a backing fabric it quilts itself.
I finally understand how to get started on a quilt. I know for many people it’s easy, but i just couldn’t get the hang of it until now. So thank you guys for doing this! Can’t wait for the next part. I’m already collecting fabrics 😍😊
Fun to do. Fun to watch. Cant wait for part two. Thankyou
I love you both
Meryle Hawkins Go for it!!
I have already started my Arne and Carlos quilt and I am going to put your names in a square.
I have to add Arne ‘s sense of color is his forte.
Anne Pickard You. are right Anne, the colours they use are gorgeous together. I love colour but it takes a special talent to just pick up bits of fabric and have them look amazing together. I love that they both just give their ideas and tips away so freely. They are my hero’s of creativity.
That lace square is stunning!
Thank you!
I enjoy your random choices of the various fabrics, I know many people could not be so carefree with their quilts😊
It is a lot of fun this way!
You guys know how to do everything! Love these quilts. ❤
This is the video that made me genuinely want to start quilting.
We are so glad to read that, we are planning more quilting videos.
You guys are amazing...
Adore you two guys!! This is a treat to watch. Sometimes I’d wonder at your choices but then watching the magical reveal when it was sewn and ironed and it worked! Fabulous.
Thank you!
Hi, guys! I watched you only once, subscribed, lost you, and I just found you again. Glad to see you! ❤️
That gold tuck is an upholstery sample. Gorgeous guys. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
I can look and listing all day long, loooove you 2
I love the idea of using left over fabrics as Ive got piles of materials but the labour involves I'm 81 yrs now with a very clear vision I use to sew a lot for my family and neighbors n friends at the moment I am knitting and chroteting it is more comforting then I don't have to be on my feet a lot I watch your programs on a regular basis I am buying wool from my pension money n can only afford acrilic wool as give away all.
Thank you so much for watching and you are keeping busy!
You guys are a force to be reckon with. Amazing what can be accomplished with odds & ends. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Hi Arne and Carlos, wow love the white crazy quilt it's so beautiful so is the new one with the pretty colors. You guys are so talented and always make great tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and have a wonderful week. Francine
This really makes me want to make my own!
Wonderful I have loads of Christmas fabrics.I used my wedding dress to make a princess dress for my granddaughter so have lots of bits of that left as well stay safe
That's perfect use for that!
I love watching you guys. Your creativity is just wonderful🌞🌟🌟🌟🌟
We should all just do it the way we want.
Thank you
Love this!❤️💐🧵 fabric cutting therapy
You are welcome!
WOW I have watched this 3 times and each time I have enjoyed it more , thanks Arne & Carlos I am inspired to go for it and have fun .
