- Right im committed to this so i told myself that i have to get out there. I drive over to Lee Valley for one of their Winter Full Gas series races, this was a Cat 4 only. 22-25 riders- i didnt get a chance to check. I fail to mention that i finish outside the points again but im not mad about it, i could hardly see and my legs had given up by the end. But i got a new Threshold HR and numbers were solid for a week of full on bike riding. Bring on Spring racing hey.

I'm a new comer to this channel, and I'm loving it. I'm 51 and making a perhaps foolish return to racing 20 years after I last raced as a 'competent' 2nd cat. I've spent 18 months getting back into some sort of shape after 20 years of not doing enough to keep the weight off. Your videos are an insight into what I'm about to try again myself. First race in 3 weeks at Ilton near Taunton. Keep it up, you doing great and keeping me motivated at the same time. 👍
Hey man, welcome. I’m down Poole way February 23rd for a Road race.
Went to uni down in Exe so know Taunton well but it was back in my rugby days
Doing a similar thing at the age of 47. Thanks for your inspiring words too! 😊
@bryanhackett2501 How is your training going? Do you have first race planned yet? I feel a little more anxious with each passing week. I know I can produce decent power, but I still need to lose more weight. The trouble is despite having all the data now I have no real comparison to what I used to be like. I live in a different area so ride on different roads.
Loving these videos, have a dream of entering a crit at some point and these are great insight. Would be great to see a video on the best way to find crits in your local area. Thanks for the solid effort getting out there and cracking on in the fine British weather!
Well done keep going onwards and upwards
Kudos for keeping it upright man, tough conditions for sure. Keep it up 🤙
Nice Max, as you mentioned nerves are always heightened in the wet, but, because half the pack are nervous you gotta get the gas down and leave those ones behind! Keep up the good work! 👍🏻
Great work! I couldn't imagine racing this early, still another 4 weeks until the first one in Derbados and man do I need it!
I was lied to by the weather app. If it had stayed dry I think I would manage better
You did fab just getting out of the door on a day like that. Well done Max 😊
I think it was because it took me 90 mins to get there that I was like, screw it I might as well race now
I love your content, thanks for sharing!! Good job on the race, too.
Thanks, appreciate it. Will do better with the onboard content for the next one 🫣
It's good to see someone enthusiastic about starting racing. I can't remember that far back when I started 😮. I've seen your power stats, so when you get the experience that will make a bigger difference. I've never been there yet but told by a friend you get 4 hrs free parking, enter your car reg inside.
I’m glad people have told me about the parking at Lee Valley. Next time I know- drop your reg at reception inside. Great tip.
Can’t wait for Spring
Also I love your honesty , no bluffing it’s wonderful content chapeau !
Thank you man, just out there enjoying it at the moment, it’s been a long fun journey
Great content again Max 👌 big kudos paying the fee and getting out there in the winter mate . 👏
Really loving this content, super helpful
Great content as always !!
Oh man this is me , worries about the bunch , worried about the wet corners , worried about the tyre pressure , nervous … and sometimes wonder what I am doing to myself 😂
Damn well done. I'd be thinking would I get through that grim weather with an intact collar bone.
Hardcore mate 💪 nice end to the video in the sunshine ☀️ clearly trying to warm yourself back up 😂 👏
Pro tip: There's a metal gate directly underneath those concrete stairs at the front of the velodrome...gives you a direct (and covered) shortcut to the crit circuit (also some loos in there IIRC).
Excellent videos on the Crits...I've down a few recently and it's interesting to see some one else in a similar position...you're doing better than me :-)
That was similar to my commute on Friday evening LOL! Well done, would not have done in those conditions
Haha it was just like a normal west London ride- no mudguards
Just a heads up at Lee Valley. Parking is Free for the first 3/4 hours. Just stick your number plate in one of the number plate registration pads downstairs 🙂
Is it too late to invoice British cycling for £15
Hard man Race for sure … 💪🥶🥶🥶🚴♂️🚴♀️🚴♂️🚴♀️🍻 Cheers
Every race is a learning curve. Well done though. 😁
Thank you man, my day in the sun will come ☀️ *i hope
Car parking is free at Lee Valley. Need to put your reg in the machine.
Ps. Leg warmers and a windproof base layer a must in those conditions.
Nice one mate 🦾😅🥶
Cheers man, it was as cold as it looked
Try the velodrome there Max. I raced there two weeks ago, brilliant. Parking free, put your reg in inside the reception, i did exactly the same
You need a super long down/puffer jacket for after race warmth🥶🥶
Love the vids❤
My local track… let’s get down there together when it’s abit warmer… for now it’s just zwifty action for me 😂🥶
100%. Im sticking to Zwift this week for sure
@@thewattlifethe stress of WTRL 2mo and needing the DOMS pain from the weekend to settle 😂🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
A good bit of advice I was given when starting out racing was: if you don’t know why you’re doing something, then you should probably not be doing that. Purposeful actions lead to results
This is very true. I’m enjoying the race craft of it all
Tough course for sure
I’d love to go do it when it’s a nice warm summers day
@ it’s great but the starting pack will be double the size of your race 😂 so more drafting and more watts!
Parking is free there dude, you have to register your car in the ground floor meters. Next time eh!! 😄
Haha how does everyone except me know this!
Good work mate, awesome video 👌✌
Dang that lady is freakin stunning I am moving to the UK and bringing her to Mallorca😍
Creepy

Do you lift weights in addition to cycling?
No not really, I desperately need to get back into. Will try work in one lower body session a week but cycling and soon running take up so much time
Did you ever figure out the headset issue?
Yeah- i put in a new bung and carbon paste. Over torqued the bolts slightly and it held up for the race, haven’t been out on it much due to British winter
@@thewattlifecarbon paste . I wish I had thought of that 😉. I recon the ID is too big and is a mismatch for the expanding bung
I also feel your cold pain ! ❤
I hate the cold!!!
@ me too I shiver like you , everyone else seems to be immune and I am there shaking
... how about recognising what a fantastic facility Lee Valley/Velodrome is for cyclists in the SE of England, you are so lucky. Pay £24 for the race organisation, resources, track hire, insurance and be happy.
Just clue me in quickly on what you are upset about here Gavin? I dont think anyone is unhappy it is just horrid weather.
@@thewattlife I'm not upset at all mate, just looking for the positives and isn't Lee Valley a fantastic facility? Any time I have visited it, there are loads of running, cycling and track events going on. The parking is free, £24 for a race is affordable for most and rain is inevitable. I enjoy the naivety of your vids, it is refreshing and probably educational for many people trying new ways to be active on bikes. Keep it up
