The owner's manual for my Acura sh-awd vehicles recommend changing all 4 tires if you get one unserviceable flat. It also states you can change two tires and always keep that newer set together on the same axle. I had an unserviceable flat tire on my new sh-awd RLX with under 7,000 miles and there was less than 2/32nd difference between the other 3 tires. One new tire worked perfectly and I now have +20,000 miles on the RLX (rotation/balance every oil change).
I am in this situation right now. two front are worn. Cannot rotate due to factory staggered setup. I have run this question by 4 mechanics I know. One who specializes in my brand, one who fixes all brands, one who works on germans, and one who works on mostly German exotics and the like. ALL of them said it is okay to change in pairs so long as your other tires have about 50% life. Not one said you must change all. What they said was if the difference is absolutely large, then yes it can but if it is marginal then it is fine as there is leeway built into these systems.
thank you for the video, this happened to me, and wasnt sure if the guy at Firestone was bullshitting me in order to sale me 4 tires. thank you!!
It's still quite possible he was bullshitting you. There are a lot of differences between various AWD and 4WD vehicles, some are more sensitive than others to different tire sizes... You should know beforehand what your particular vehicle can deal with. I expect Firestone's lawyers dictate a lot of what they can and cannot do based on liability and sales goals.

Useful information, Thanks
Thank you for information!! It is very helpful. What daily or monthly maintenance is required to make car to last from 10 years to 20 years to avoid costly repairs?
Thank you. This is nuts. I won't buy a 4WD/AWD car again.
Cool, I was automatically going to replace all 4, regardless of my AWD, but the tires are fairly new, tread still looks pretty good.
I don't get how the differential would get damaged by having different wheels turn at different rate. Isn't that the whole purpose of the differential to allow that to happen? Exactly how and what components of the differential get damaged? Please explain.
I totally agree with you! Is funny I think they do not have a explanation is just that they like you to spend more money!
Agreed. The common explanation is "the computer and differential have to work extra hard and that can cause damage..." If the computer and differential didn't have to accommodate differences in the rotation of the wheels than it wouldn't have a purpose would it? It's why the system exists. This is a lot of hooey unless one of the wheels/tires is grossly damaged such that it resembles a Fred Flintstone tire.
…see other RUclips videos with in-depth explaining. Can cause severe damage that is not covered by the warranty
We purchased a new 2018 Chevy Equinox Premier withe both AWD and front wheel drive. Around 20,000 miles we took it into the dealer for it's regular maintenance and they discovered four nails in one tire. They ordered a new tire while we were waiting for it to be delivered I wondering about the AWD so I looked it up on RUclips and found this stuff out. I asked the Chevrolet Dealer about it and they said the tire depth wasn't low enough to be concerned. We drive it mostly on two wheel mode but what concerns me is these car dealers don't give you any f this information when shopping for a new car.
My Ford Flex manual says you can replace one tire at a time as long as it is the same tire
What is significant difference in thread depth?
I've had to replace a full set twice due to unfixable flat. Consider this when looking at AWD.
I never thought about this
You gotta be rich
If I have to rotate the tires on an awd, doesn't that mean I already have uneven wear? Why, then, is it not recommended for awd cars to just replace all 4 tires by the time tire rotation would be recommended?
Sean Santos if you’re doing your routine rotations than the tread differences between the tires won’t be to significant as he says near the end of the video. Usually there shouldn’t be more than 3/32 of tread difference between the tires
@@JesusMartinez-bt2ry bro simply.... the front tires do TURNS and take corners way different than rear .... so absolutely you want to rotate them usually about every 6,000 -10,000 miles (The less miles you rotate them the better) the idea is to keep them rotating so the wear is not that big of a gap that could affect the transmission system
What if I'll buy 4 used tires and all tires have even wears? will it just be fine for my AWD?
I think it's all about clutch-pack based transfer case,
AWD system either FWD or RWD based when wheels is
not the same equal tire pressure and size, the motor-driven clutch activation
would kick in,however, the car in on the pavement instead of slippery road surface.
Then the clutch would wear rapidly.
so why do i have a spare if I can't use it
It’s so you’re not stranded in the middle of nowhere and can get yourself to a safe place to get your flat fixed.
well said
Quite simply because if you're lucky enough to have a spare wheel now and a modern car it is for the purposes of getting you to a local garage it is not meant to be used long-term basis that's probably why they have temporary use only written on the side of the wheel
Add four new tires, and then got a flat while going to a friend's farm. I bought one new replacement tire of the same brand. Drove the Subaru for 2 years with no problems. I recently got two new tires put in the front.
The real issue I had was that one of the wheels was slightly bent due to hitting a curb really hard 4 years prior. Yeah a lot of tire places missed that problem. Thank God this last one didn't and the dude called me in the back to check it out.
This is great but I don't really know what differential is and why it effects the drive train!!
ruclips.net/video/yYAw79386WI/видео.html
This is really only true for full-time awd systems like on a Subaru. If you have a part-time system like my Taurus does, it only operates the rear wheels for seconds at a time when the fronts are slipping which is hardly ever.
I cant believe he didnt mention the most important part... You absolutely want to change your Summer Air to Winter air and vise versa depending of the weather temperature due to the seasons of the years
😊k😊i😊k😊k
And be careful with your blinker fluid! ruclips.net/video/E6GsXhBb10k/видео.html
No. You don’t need to replace 4. If within 3/32 difference
In AWD it doesn't matter it has 3rd differential to correct any different in tires size and speed but in 4WD it matters it has only 2 differentials
How would this argument apply to an electric all wheel drive vehicle, like a Tesla, which has two or more computer-controlled electric motors driving the wheels? Thanks
Exactly the question I have for my Model X. I’m between 5-7 32’s on tread depth on all (4) tires and got a screw in (1) front tire. Because it has the foam for sound absorption inside the tire center said they could not patch the tire.
So I’m replacing the two front tires but not sure if I should also replace the two rear tires.
The new front tires will have 10/32 and the rear tires will have about 5/32 of tread.
@@johnhoffman8853 Tyre repairers will repair foam (noise reducing) tyres in th UK, and I guess elsewhere. You just cut away the smallest piece of foam around the hole and repair as usual. The repair doesn't affect the performance of the tyre, just as it doesn't affect any other tyre. So little foam is removed that it has negligible weight compared with the whole tyre.
Tim Fairless Great point, And that’s what I wanted them to do. However the shop I took it to here in the US said that they do not repair tires with foam. Perhaps I should call a couple of shops around and see if they will patch the tire as I still have good tread left. Thanks for the reply!
Would the car drive funny if so like what, what should I look out for ? I changed 3 tires on my 2011 Ford Taurus and it feel funny and sound funny ... if anyone can help that would be great thanks
Change that fourth and you’re good
It’s a scam. All wheel drive cars are front wheel drive only until the front wheel drive until the front tire slip like on ice. Then the computer sends power to the rear. There are very few exceptions to this. Owners manuals will tell you to change in pair. Two rear or two front. But the tire shop will just try to sell you something you don’t really need.
I didn't change mine just one now I Gota 7/10 so amam change the other one
Bought 2 tires online and tried to mount those 2 new good year tires recently on the front of my infinity g35x but the guy at the shop refused to mount them because the rear ones I have were Michellin. He insisted that becaise it's an AWD need the 4 tires need to be same brand. Visited multiple shops and lot of them say the same. I ended up finding a shop that didn't check the brand and agreed to mount them. Let's hope my car doesnt brake after this.
Mr Mr Jims update?
Itll take awhile to break. The reason shops dont do this is liability! If you have mismatched tires on long enough there's a great chance your transfer case will over work itself and power out. It's like a 2000 dollar repair and tire shops dont want to be responsible for that
Next time go to a Mexican use tire shop.
Jims, are you okay??
Yo Jim what's up?
BS on normal four wheel drive. You will only be in four wheel drive when driving on slippery conditions so it won't bind up the drive train. It would be the same as turn in four wheel drive. The wheels want to spin at different speeds.
This isn't true at all, it's a rumor started by guess who? Got that right! Tires manufacturers! They say the differential gets damaged, but guess what the differential is for? It's there to allow free wheel spin, so each tire can spin at it's own rate!!!! Now, AWD cars have not one, not 2, but 3 differentials!! Now, when a tire is old vs new, guess how much of a difference it is? It's only about a quarter inch!! Now guess how much tire pressure differences affect tires? About a quarter inch!! Shops like this one will ALWAYS try to get you to spend more as they sell tires and make money off of them.
Funny story , all time 4wd didn’t use to need all 4 tires replaced.Funny how you used to be able to own a vehicle like I did, without losing the transfer case and/or differential.
How come the spare is a little donut? Won’t that destroy the care!!🤪
Tom Ryan *Because where ever you get stranded there won’t always be a tire shop right where you get stranded 🤦🏽♂️, What are you gonna do if you get standed in the middle of no where and have no reception and no spare?*
@@IDABAYAREA650I just happened to me the other day, got a popped tire in the canyons with no reception. Thank god i had a spare
Good thing I have a FWD CAR
Most people can't afford new tires every time they have a tired gets damaged. Believe me when you live in a state that has a lot of pot holes it's damn near impossible to miss them all.
Nice Video! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Patlarny Vehicle History Principle (should be on google have a look)? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to repair your car the simple way minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my best friend Jordan after many years got astronomical results with it.
You can have tires shaved.
Pennsylvania?
It doesn’t make sense at all . So what happens when you turn or drive in wet or icy conditions thru the winter months . As long as the tires are the same size it’ll be fine
Will it work with mismatched treads?
Doug Steele that’s not good to do with any vehicle because of handling issues not cause it’s gonna prematurely wear out your all wheel drive
BS, always used 4 different tires on my awd. No issues. 200,000 miles.
Did you have a AWD or 4WD cuz both are different systems? Also depending on what kind of car you have since luxury cars have a more complex AWD systems. Hondas AWD system is front wheel drive bias and only puts power in the rear for when traction is needed.
Yeah this is such bullshit, then wtf is the differencial for? It doesn't have to work harder as he states, its just doing its job. Also, different PSIs on tires do the same thing, and it's impossible to keep the pressure even over time
I have never met anyone with any kind of 4 wheel drive system who has replaced all 4 tyres as a result of losing 1 tyre.

According to his logic you drove an AWD vehicle down bad terrain your drive train would go bad because it is uneven. 😆 Yeah he is full of shit. Now as far as even wear on your suspension ESPECIALLY the front end yes. So is it important to replace at minimum in pairs.... I would advise doing 1 axle at a time unless your in a crappy situation
Is this bs🤔
I call BS on this. If this were true, the spare tire that often comes with these cars would be the same size as the other tires and not some undersized 'donut'. Sure the donut isn't a permanent fix but again, due to it's obvious difference in size it would definitely screw up your AWD system if this were true.
Fraud!
I had this happen to me recently with my new Kia Sorento AWD and an un-fixable tire. I used the spare donut (always smaller than the regular tire) and kept it under 40MPH until I got home, but the AWD system detected an issue and turned on the yellow AWD light indicating a problem. Once the donut was off the car and the one bad tire was replaced with an identical tire (my other tires all had 9.8K miles on them), the car's systems were again happy (no warning lights) and no noises and drove fine. I only replaced the bad tire with an identical OEM tire (car only had 9.8K miles on it) and difference between the new tire and old was 2/32", so the AWD should be fine long term.
@@williamhoodtn Driving on the donut for an extended period will overheat the differentials. It's there to limp to a station where you can replace the oem tire. There should be no problem putting on a new tire on any standard awd passenger car. The difference in wheel diameter between new and totally worn tire should not cause the awd to engage.
Bullshit! You did not explain. Just regurgitated what everyone is saying. Like chicken. Can you explain, how the differential "works harder"? So far I see no explanation, what so ever. To explain you have to understand, not just copy paste.
